The following is another article that is derived from my notes taken during Dave Taylor's session at BlogWorld 2008 entitled Ten Things You Need to Know About Search Engines & Find-ability.

"You are My Density...Keyword, that is!"

According to our trusty Wikipedia, "Keyword density is the measurement, in percentage, of the number of times a keyword or phrase appears, compared to the total number of words in a page." When you take Keyword Density to its extreme, it's called Keyword Stuffing, and it's considered an unethical SEO technique.

But the big debate, of course, is what percentage of Keyword Density is most optimum/effective? 5%, 8%, 25%?

Have you ever read something with a Keyword Density of 25%? YIKES! It may help you to rank more effectively, but your reader is going to quickly head off for the nearest exit!

Dave suggests simply reading your blog article to yourself 'out-loud.' Does it sound intelligible? Does your story come across clearly? Or do you sound more like Arnold Schwarzenegger trying to act?

A couple of really simple, but profound tips:

  • Always make sure when you review your blog post draft before publishing, to replace the word 'It' with the actual subject/topic noun. For example, say you're writing an article about your new iPhone, and you state: "My new iPhone is really amazing! It is so easy to use." In this instance, you would say, "The iPhone is so easy to use."
  • Many of us use 'teaser posts' or provide links within the body of our blog post. Typically, most people use something like, "To read more, GO HERE! or click HERE! Instead, you should use keywords/titles from the content you are linking too, such as, "Read more about My New iPhone!" or simply use the name of the site you are linking too.

What are the Key Search Terms that consumers are using today? There are several FREE on-line tools available to help you identify other popular search terms that are similar to your Keywords. Google KeyWord Tool is one. WordTracker is another.

I listened to the video, hard as it was to hear, your summary is great. I especially like the comment about not saying click here, or if you do, linking the words you are clicking too. All this can make such a difference.

Someone who knows about SEO here once told me when I look at my keyword density...if its more than 10% ...google doesn't like that...usually up to8% is adequate...but hey...what do I know...I'm just a Realtor(R)

Hey Rich - Good advice. As hard as many of us try to educate others here about SEO many of the same mistakes are made over and over again. I am constantly telling others to use their keywords as anchor text ect. Find out anything on the "no follow" with the blog tags?

So simple so why do we not do it?  Most of us know this, we just need to be more aware of what and how we write.

Rich - another session I would have liked to have attended. It always surprises me that some of the thingw we should do are really pretty simple, perhaps even common sense, adn yet we make it so much more complicated. And we worry too much about SEo and not about how and what we are saying to consumers. The reminders are always a good thing.

This is good stuff.  I really wasn't aware of this.  I think there's a balance between writing a great post and "stuffing".  I wasn't aware that this existed, but, now, as a result, I will do some "purposed" stuffing.  Ultimately though, I'll keep writing or attempting to write great posts.

Good instruction, excellent teaching style... now if everyone learns the lesson here, you'll have put an end to out-of-body posts and all the links will be properly identified within the body of the blog post.  IT Blog posts will stop suffering needlessly with keyword density. >>>> Have you ever read something with a Keyword Density of 25%? YIKES! It may help you to rank more effectively, but your reader is going to quickly head off for the nearest exit!

Rich, that sentence needs to in triple size bold font!!!!

When folks first learn about Keyword Density, they think Keyword Density is fabulous because Keyword Density really does improve Google ranking, and so they try to maximize their Keyword Density by inserting Keywords as Densely as possible in every post they write, whether the topic of the post is about Keyword Density or not.

Except all those Densely packed Keywords are giving me a Keyword Density headache.  :-)

**P.S. Run a Google search on the term Keyword Density Calculator there are some cool tools to count Keyword Density percentages for you, so you don't have to count your Keywords by hand.

**P.S.S. http://www.live-keyword-analysis.com/ says this comment is only 11.6% -- Obviously I need to try harder.  :-)

Keywords? Absolutely, using keywords is important. Insert keywords throughout your post.  Never substitute with pronouns - use keywords.  Place keywords in the title.  Use keywords in the text.  Employ keywords as your links.  Keywords are king.

Okay, I'm "stuffed."  Not even at 25% and already I'm nauseous.  I think it makes a pretty good case for keyword stuffing and intelligible writing being mutually exclusive.

What is the relationship between a keyword and a metatag? Are we to put the hoped for searchword in the metatag, in the content and in the title?

Does putting a phrase in the metatag make it a key word?

Are keywords just phrases that are central to the page or post topic, and that hopefully will be used as search words?

These important and central words should be in the metatags and in the title, and used frequently and with some emphasis in the content?

Thanks for the article, but I have to object to one sentence in it:

Or do you sound more like Arnold Schwarzenegger trying to act?

He could arguably be considered the world's second best actor, behind Ronald Reagan. Reagan got to act like a President. Arnold is only acting like a Governor. LOL

Rich,

Keyword density, hmmm? Nice term and obviously very important in the SEO world. I guess to find the right balance you just have to trust your own judgment about it. Or perhaps ask a friend or two to give you an honest appraisal of your writings.

Keyword density is a tricky thing.  I have a guy who is doing some SEO for my web site.  He says that, in the articles he is writing for my web site,  Google likes about one link to your page for every  one hundred words.  These articles are not on my site.  The articles are being circulated on various other sites and linking back to me.   I guess that is different from Key word density.  I mean its different if I type the key word, but don't link it back to my site, right?  I would appreciate anyone's feedback/clarification on that.

5:28pm • #46

All denseness aside, mine and my keywords! As Always I've learned a new trick, this coming from the Queen of "it".  I guess I needed to become a better writer at some point; so now is as good a time as any!
