I am not one to write lengthy political prose nor am I one to eloquently construct text embellished with political buzz decribing the financial crisis facing our country, however, I am the child of two wonderful hippies.
As many my age, I was raised on stories of social revolt. If not by my parents, stories told by most my high school teachers, college professors and other influential adults in my life were filled with passion, pride, and the bond of an entire generation.
Baby Boomers, Where are you?
Your actions even made it into my history books! Where are you?
Your counterculture challenged traditional values of reason, achievement, progress, social responsibility all the while forcing attention to the Vietnam War and how it moved money away from domestic priorities.
Where are you?
My generation is spoiled. We thankfully enjoy the path you paved. It is my fear that we are without the direction that caused you to be so powerful. Although your stories evoke emotion, inspiration, we are missing the element necessary to create social change.
I read article upon article explaining the change anticipated by the upcoming retirement and mobility of the baby boomers.
Considering my father it is difficult for me to imagine a generation who refused to trust anyone over 30 will be satisfied with "retirement."
Never in my lifetime have I seen the need for a public voice the way I see it now. Disappointed in the complacency of my generation, myself included, I long for the masses of flower power to flock to Washington and demand change.
A recent visit with my father on our old front porch swing with Joan Baez's "God on Our Side" playing in the background made me wonder..
Baby Boomers, Where are You????
