Homecoming at The Woodlands Texas High School and Excitement is in the air!!!!!

Since everything grows big in Texas, it's also not surprising that the Lone Star State is credited with developing some of the most elaborate corsages known as Homecoming Mums!

Some students take the mums just as seriously as the Homecoming Football Game itself and  you know ... EVERYTHING IS BIGGER IN TEXAS!

A few days before the dance students who have dates, exchange mums for the girls and garters for the guys!

It is usually worn in the middle of the chest like a breastplate with the streamers flowing down the front of the body almost touching the ankles. It is a fashion statement!

The guys wear Homecoming Garters, a smaller version of the mum, on their sleeves.

For the uninitiated, a homecoming mum is an oversize mum corsage that is decorated with:

  • pictures
  • school colors
  • a teddy bear (some of the more elaborate ones have Barbies school uniforms)
  • streamers
  • their names in sparkly letters
  • bells
  • charms
  • candy
  • toys
  • gadgets
  • of course a cowbell at the bottom

They can cost over $100 and weigh as much as 12 pounds!

Homecoming mums have become a status symbol for many high school students.

Designs change every year and the more original, the better!

Friday September 26 The Woodlands High School Highlanders Varsity Football will play Clear Lake High School at the Woodforest Stadium at 7:30pm.

The Band was getting ready with all of their instruments.

The Homecoming Dance will be on Saturday, September 27, at 8PM.

Having spent a lot of time in the Southwest and Midwest, I do miss Friday night football games!!!  They are just not the same in the NE.  No disrespect NE, just not the same.  At our HS (Senior class of about 675) football games, the kids are not even allowed to stand up during the games.  At basketball games, they are only allowed to cheer on their own team.  They are not allowed to hoot, hollar, or do anything to disrupt the opponent!!!

Signed,

I know the mums are new to you Pippa, but, as a home grown Texan I had one just like them at Homecoming in Plano, Tx growing up! It is pretty unique! Enjoy the fun and make sure you bring your camera w/you! I know you will!

Homecoming mums have become a status symbol for many high school students.

"Have become"? I had to laugh. They were status symbols back in 1973 in Kingsville, Texas. That was my first real experience at knowing that I was from the wrong side of town and that my family was poor. I couldn't afford one of those extravagant mums and sat at home listening to The Beatles rather than going to the homecoming game and being embarrassed.

Texas A&M doesn't have a homecoming game per sé because every game is a homecoming for some class, but even there mums for each game were extravagant status symbols from 1973 to at least 1993. Probably still are since the mum industry had a cash cow with 86,000 people showing up each fall for six home football games. LOL

I remember seeing mums from my cousin in the Beaumont area in the early 90's and haven't seen them anywhere else.  They do seem unique to Texas and prove that everything is bigger in Texas.

Pippa, Having moved here from another state I have never understood the mums but my children took part in them also (well at least they each took part one time).  I can't believe how expensive they were.  Our son decided he needed to go his Sophomore year and I wasn't paying for Sophomore homecoming and after that expense it lost its glory.

Were we in the same ABR class?

Pippa,
It is interesting to read about different traditions in different parts of the country.  This is all new to me.  Your photos are great and this is a wonderful way to promote the area.

Pippa, mums are a new one on me.  I guess things are bigger in Texas.  Nice photos, too.  Do they wear them all day in their classes?  I imagine they have a lot of fun.

I live in small town right outside of Houston. I just finished 2 mums yesterday for my daughter & her best friend. I love this time of year.  My daughter gets so excited about homecoming & school spirit. This was our third year making them. We only have one more year of mums and homecoming. Then it's off to college.  I will miss these bonding times with my "little girl".
