Remember the movie Rambo - First Blood? If so, you might recognize Hope as the setting for this muscle-bound Hollywood smash. Last year, Hope celebrated the 25th anniversary of Rambo's 1982 release on the Big Screen! Hard to believe it was that long ago!

In the fall of 1981 the District of Hope, B.C. was transformed by Hollywood - and became known as the 'big screen birthplace' of John Rambo!

For six weeks - the filming of First Blood created a time of starwatching on the streets!   A crew of aproximately up somewhere around 100 people moved in and created a set that included "the Sheriff's Office" on the lawn of the District Hall.  They also constructed  a false  front for the local gas station and built the gun shop on the street across from the District Hall on the corner of Third Avenue and Commission Street.

Three of these sets would be the scene of violent and destructive film sequences.  But the crew also did some other interesting work around town.  They placed American mailbox and newspaper dispensers on the downton streets....flew American flags and erected a Tony Lama coboy boots billboard and a US Army billboard downtown.

Check out this video of the filming of First Blood - in Hope - you should be able to recognize the landmarks......

Its Sylvester Stallone's 'First Blood' that keeps Hope on the movie making map and has made it a kind of mecca for Rambo Fans.  Check out the Hope Museum at 919 Water - for movie posters and photo 'stills' that are on display!

Hi Liz... Having lived in NYC I am used to movie and TV film crews... but I bet it was an entirely more interesting adventure to have a small town transformed like Hope, B.C. experienced.

I remember First Blood well, and the beautiful scenery - the massive trees ... the fall and the bleeding arm (and then the stitching LOL ... I don't know why that scene sticks out .... :)
Thanks for the info ... I didn't know it was Hope, B.C.

Liz - When I first watch First Blood, I thought it might have been filmed in Oregon or Washington. That is very interesting that it was filmed in BC. I loved all the Rambo Movies and the first and very last, I think were the best. The very last Rambo movie looks like it was filmed in Myanmar (Burma), but it was filmed in Thailand. The Burmese government would never allow this movie to be filmed in their country. Thanks for the view/ read!

Somewhere near that time our town was becoming similarly famous... as the set of... Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Sort of similar themes.
