Is the USA Still #1?

When I read the current news, watch TV and review some of the blogs posted I'm concerned about our ability to solve the serious problems our country faces.  The current financial crisis, oil prices, and the collapse of the housing market are the beginning signs of the decline of the United States as the preeminent world power. The shift has begun, and while we probably will not see another superpower such as the USA in the years to come; what we will see is the rise of several countries to prominence in different areas.

The growth of China cannot be stopped, and Russia and India are experiencing incredible growth even though their growth has slowed due to the recent world-wide financial events. But their potential future power can’t be ignored. If we expect our great country to regain some of what has been lost we must come together as a people and work to find solutions to some serious problems.

It’s not a political issue; it’s an American issue. Somehow we have lost our vision in recent years and the media has served to create strong divisions and hatred between two deeply divided groups in our country. It’s possible for us to succeed and to move forward once again, but it won’t happen as long as we remain divided and unwilling to come together in a spirit of true cooperation.

I couldn't agree with you more.  America can remain great, but it's citizens need to come together as Great Americans and start solving the problems we face head on.  It's important to realize how we got in the mess we're in, but it's much more important to find a way to solve these problems without losing the essense of what makes this country so great.

John -

We need an AWARENESS that we have to work even harder to keep our stature in the world!

In the 1970's, U.S. Automakers felt their position as world leaders in the auto market was unassailable - no need to make any changes to keep pace with the market.  After all - "We're GENERAL MOTORS!"  "We're FORD!"

THEY were wrong!

The U.S. has made some mistakes over the last few years, and some assumptions.  We need to change these if we want to stay Number 1.

Will we find the courage, and the consensus, to do so?  We hope!

John, The beauty of our country is we don't keep a secret very well. In China and Russia you don't know from one day to the next what will happen. We beat ourselves up. We second guess everything. I know from experience most people long to live here and trek towards a dream. Why would they want to come to a country if it wasn't better than the one they left behind?

John - I hear where you are coming from.  I love America and pray that it changes. The media is a massive power that is about 95% negative for us.  And so many Americans are lovers of themselves.  It is all about self pleasure.  On a side note though, I appreciate AR and everyone's willingness to share.  I must admit, sometimes I am selfish and don't like to offer up "trade secrets", but there are many selfless people on AR and it really is a breath of fresh air.

John,

That's just it buddy, in times of CRISIS, and I do mean CRISIS this country certainly DOES come together...there are no Republicans and there are no Democrats...when this country is attacked this country is ONE NATION, UNDER GOD...It is unfortunate that it often takes such a crisis to get us all to come together for the good of the country...I pray every day for our wonderful country...and I pray for our Leaders...it is all I can really do anymore...and I am sadden by all of this animosity between our two parties...

Hi John,  Our country will come together...Both Republicans and Democrats agree this is ONE NATION, UNDER GOD... As noted in a previous reply, a crisis to get us all to come together for the good of the country will be produced by the entire government...I pray every day that our country will prevail over this difficult time...and I also pray for our Leaders that they will unify in their efforts toward these objectives.

No doubt USA is still number 1 and I do not think any other country will replace USA within foreseeable future. But the fact is that other countries is getting closer to this great country of USA and it will get closer. As long as this country does not destroy the University system, I think USA will always be No.1.

I (German living in Florida for over 15 years) had a very interesting conversation with a German banker that was visiting. I wanted to know what Europe was thinking about the mess we have here.

The answer was

"If anybody can get out of this it is American people because of the spirit they have and we trust it is going to happen."

John, this is a great concern for every American whether we realize it or not; I think that coming together is one great thing.  We need to realize that we are Americans, not Republicans nor Democrats or what ever.  I honestly feel we need to right our ship economically, I know that everyone will disagree with me, but I think ALL Foreign aide must be suspended until our economy is strengthened and our debt is paid off.  Any Foreign aide after that must come after we have a surplus.  It is one thing to fund programs for our citizen's another to fund "friendship" from other countries.

John, Good question and yes, I believe that America is still #1 in the world. Now, if we want to hold on to that position we need to take care of, what I believe, is our biggest challenge...energy independence. It's long past the time that we should continue to send so much of our money to countries that hate us. We continue to empower tin pot dictators because they have the oil and we have the need. Stop the sound bites and start doing something.

Threading two of your quotes together says it well:

"When I read the current news, watch TV" ...the answer is don't believe what you watch

"the media has served to create strong divisions" ...now there is an understatement

My own father once gave me this piece of advice:

Believe NONE of what you hear, and only HALF of what you see and you will do well!
