Moving is a Pain

By
Real Estate Agent with Realty Oasis - Metro Brokers

Its been 9 1/2 years since I have moved my own family from point A to Point B.  And even that was just cross town from one side of Highlands Ranch to the other.  Prior to that I had moved a few years beofre from one area of South East Denver to Highlands Ranch. Over those years I have had to move professionally a few times.

I finished another move of sorts today.  I have not switched brokerages but have decided to home office 100%.  I work from home a great deal anyway, and really only was spending about 4 - 6 hours a week in my office.

I liked my office - I mean I still do, but the physcial 4 walls, I liked it.  It just didn't make sense anymore.  At least for now.  So I decided to home office and spend that money I will be saving on different things that will truly make a difference to my clients.

Its a good chunk of change.

I think every Realtor should move in some capacity every so often.   Its a good reminder what our clients are subjected too.  I didn't have to go through all of the personal changes necessary in packing a house and trying to keep things up to par with kids running around for showings.  Of course its not realistic that every Realtor move all the time as an exercise - and I venture to guess that those that do are probably pretty good at being much more sensitive to the stress that is induced form moving.

But just getting things out for the deadline of October 1 while being extrememly busy was enough.

Its a good reminder.

Last year we renovateded our home and had to move out for six months. After twenty years I had accumulated alot of stuff. I did not realize how long it took to get ready to move and how long it took to get settled once you moved in.  Well my house is renovated and I have been back in for one year now and still I have not hung any pictures on the wall!

After the experience I put together a "moving package" for my buyers and sellers. It contains helpful phone numbers, lists of people to contact and time frames to start doing things before your move.  I believe it helps ! It would have helped me!

Hi Steve - Bear and I moved into the house I'm now in 5 years ago or so, and what a pain that was.  I agree with you that we should all move once in awhile to be reminded of what they all go through when we sell their homes or help them buy their new home.  Good luck with your move to a home-office!

Steve--When I switched brokerages, I started to office from home and LOVE it. We considered moving this year but the whole packing thing is overwhelming to think about so remodeled instead. I am extremely empathetic to all of my clients...Enjoy your new home office! :)

James - That sounds like a great package.

Ann - It is a huge amount of work to move - and this move for me was small potatoes.

Teri - I don't feel that there will be a huge change there, as I have already been working at home most of the time.

Your comment about being reminded of what our clients are going through hit home!  It would be good for all of us to have a refresher course on how it feels to try to sell a home, move, and buy another home...while working, taking care of kids/pets, keeping the house clean, etc.  I've become a lot more sympathetic after having my personal house on the market.  Didn't need to sell, just wanted to move a little closer to town...but the stress wasn't worth it!  I'm happy where I'm at and now I don't have to worry about what I'm going to do with all that stuff in the attic!

Deidre - Yes, its a lot of work. Getting my office set up completely here was no small task, but it doesn't even begin to compare what our clients go through when moving.

Cutting expenses moving to home office is a great idea to save money during this time. I know many agents who are doing it and yes it is a good chunk of change that can be put to better use.

Missy - I think that my clients will be pleased to know how I am re-investing the savings into my marketing of their properties.

I've moved twice since I started real estate and If I never do it again it wouldn't bother me. I know we will be moving again in the next year or two, but I really don't want to!

I only had to move my office to a home office this time Todd, I am not looking forward to having to move from our home, if we ever decide to.  But its good to stay in touch with the realities we can easily forget.

After serving 20 years is the military, I have decided that I didn't want ot move anymore. It was challenging to say the least.  Like you indicated, sometimes moving is the best thing for one's career. Since getting into Real Estate  in 2005, I have moved three times, one of those was between brokerages.  Just last week I spoke to my Broker about moving to a different office.  He agrees that it would be good for my business. But that will be my final move for awhile.  If I have to move again, it will be in my own brokerage.
