PAUL NEWMAN 1925-2008

Today the world morns as we learn of the death of one of the greatest actors of our times, PAUL NEWMAN.

Best known for his many movie roles, Paul Newman 83, leaves behind a legacy. He started his acting career in 1954. With his piercing blue eyes, good looks and great acting abilities it was easy for Hollywood to see he would go far with his career.

Not only one of the greatest actors of our time, but a philanthropist as well.  Newman spent the past 26 years of his life donating to various charities with the millions of dollars raised from his food product line which he started in 1987.

One of my favorite salad dressings comes from his line of products. I tried it for the first time, because of the label having one of my favorite actors on it.  Then I continued to buy it for it's fantastic taste and the fact that the proceeds go to charity makes me love it that much more! Delicious! Paul...thanks for making this great balsamic vinaigrette.

Of course Paul Newman, will be best remembered for his great contributions to film.  Here's a look at some of his great classics:

"Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" (1958)

"Cool Hand Luke" (1967)

The fist time I saw Paul Newman, was when he starred in one of my favorite movies,        "Cool Hand Luke"! It was love at first sight!

Newman would later be paired up with actor, Robert Redford to star in some more Hollywood's classics.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969)

                The Sting (1971)

Paul Newman and the beautiful Joanne Woodward, were married in 1958.

Paul Newman,a legendary man, not only for his great contributions to film, but for his passionate work throughout his life in helping others with his many charitable donations.

A beautiful legacy of one man...Paul Newman...he will surely be missed!

A sad sad day indeed.  Mr. Newman was an outstanding man, and not your typical Hollywood husband.  He will be missed.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.  Your post is a nice tribute to a legend.

Ok...I had just dried my tears after watching a television tribute this morning and now you've got me going again.  What a beautiful and amazing man...I didn't even realize how much he touched me until today..I am just a puddle.  Cool Hand Luke was my first movie too - they showed it on a Friday night at my Jr. high School.  So many great films followed. What a fabulous actor, director, family man, race car driver and humanitarian.  When I think of all he did for terminally ill children it makes me want to be a better person. Thank you for your beautiful and touchng post.

Hi Michelle: I was so saddened by this news. I LOVED Paul Newman. He was a gentleman, kind and generous, beautiful in and out, and such a wonderful actor! AND, his marriage to Joanne Woodward stood the time of Hollywood, where most did/do not. He'll be so missed!  Thanks for sharing this.

Leah- I think we will find as time goes by that he touched the hearts of many a fan!  Thanks for commenting.

Gene-Mr. Newman really was a gentleman and a strong family man. He will be missed by so many.

Ellen- Paul Newman was an AMAZING man... and as you said, his work with the terminally ill children is so commendable.  He really is a true example of one who has lived a very fulfilling and meaningful life! He definitely followed his passions.  I'm so sad too!  The tributes on television have been wonderful to watch.  I'm heading out to pick up some dvd's of some of his classics to watch tonight. Thanks for commenting, come back when you can!

Evelyn- We will have the memories in our hearts forever!

Kat- By the looks of things, a ton of people will be missing him for his great spirit and many contributions. Joanne and Paul were so lucky to have each other, what an example of a strong union!

Donald- A life-long friend is a good place to be, I'm sure Mr. Newman didn't have a single enemy! Thanks for commenting.

What a great post Michelle.  Back in the summer of 1987 I had the honor of meeting him.  He was racing at Road Atlanta and I in my former life (before real estate) was in the newspaper business and the sports editor of the paper I worked for gave me two press pit passes if I promised to bring him some photos.  Paul Newman... who was notorious for NOT signing autographs because he was just a regular joe did sign my race program.  He let me get on his tour bus and had a chat with me.  He was a super guy.  He will be missed, but as well he will live on.

Tammy- Thanks for sharing your story.  How fortunate for you that you had the opportunity to meet Paul Newman and share a few words with him.  Also lucky for you to have known the sports editor who gave you those pit passes! ;)

I was in high school and college during the peak of Paul Newman's career, so you can imagine that a testosterone-laden student might, just might, like the bravado and macho image of Mr. Newman. I was a high school freshman when Butch Cassidy came out and that was enough to make me a fan of Newman and Redford forever. I had the opportunity to stay at Redford's Sundance Resort in Utah back in 1999. Well worth the money.

Paul  spent a good deal of time in our area and raced at the Brainerd International Raceway, formerly Donnybrook.  He gave me a big old bend over break your back kiss when I presently him with his trophy in the 70's.  Then another one so the local newspaper photog could get a better angle. The photo may have been lost in our tornado a few years back.  He was pretty funny and his eyes were soooooooooooooo blue.

Paul was rare indeed. As beautiful inside as he was outside. His smile just melts me. I am really enjoying watching him again, though it is certainly bittersweet.

Elaine-It is bittersweet watching his old movies, but so nice that we have them to cherish!  I watched The Sting, the other night and really watched the movie in a completely different way.  Really watching how he reacted to the role he was playing and wondering about how much fun he must have had making this movie with Robert Redford.
