Why don't you respond to comments made?

Since I joined ActiveRain, I have read quite a few posts that asked the question - 'why do you blog'.  I'm not sure why someone posts the question in the first place.  Perhaps its to see what comments they will receive...  or to get to know their readers... or perhaps it's just for the points... One thing is for sure, there are only a few possible answers to the question.  Here are a few I have read:

  • Share ideas or experiences
  • Networking with other real estate professionals
  • Points - more points = better ranking
  • Publicity / Web presence for homeowners or potential homeowners

One person wrote - "I listen to customers throughout the day about what they want.  I take this time to write about ME."

Personally, I post on my blog for all of those reasons (well.. maybe not the last one).  There are posts on my blog with marketing ideas for Real Estate Agents and posts of local information for Homeowners.

I subscribe to quite a few blogs on AR.  Some write every day and some write once a month.  Yes, I have a life and a career, but I enjoy reading people's take on current marketing conditions and recent media.  My question to all bloggers is this...

Do you bother to read and respond to the comments you receive on your post?

You took several minutes (sometimes much longer) to put together just the right post - pictures, colored font, and perhaps a video.  Prior to hitting 'post blog entry', you read the post again for accuracy and any last minute changes or ideas.  You made sure to check the right groups and localism area, depending on the content.

Is that the end of your feeling on the subject?  If you think about it, the chances are pretty good that you have at least one subscriber.  Add that to the fact that you posted to five different groups.  Didn’t you think someone was going to make a ‘valid’ comment at some point?

I am not talking about the generic ‘Great post. Thanks for sharing’ comment.  I am talking about the comment that either asked a question or responded in a way that should have furthered a conversation.

Some bloggers are GREAT at responding.  Why aren’t you?

John, I have commented on post such as this before. If I have something to say in my comments I go on to make a point even if it's just for fun. I find myself writing comments that can be as long as the post it self. When that happens, and I took the time to respond I do check back to see if the author left me a response. If the author..says nothing, not even a thank you I have to say I am less likely to comment again on one of this persons posts. This is a social net work, so don't write just to hear yourself talk, respond to all comments (there are my thoughts). Steve

Good Morning John, I do try to comment back to all of my readers (no matter how few, lol)  I see several authors out there that will get tons of comments and only comment back to a select few! (and they are leaders in their states)     Have a great day :)

John, I try to respond to questions that are raised where I can and even take some time to add comments of my own after reading statements left by respondents.  Yes, AR is a social network but it's also one for sharing information as well as raising questions.

John,

One of the things I have done is build a great network of friends on AR.  You ar one of those friends. Certain people I know will respond to my blog posts and give some great advice or point me in a different direction.  For that very reason, I try to respond to every person that commented on my blog and return the favor.  I you dont read the comments on your blog posts.....you are missing a great source of information.

Keep up the good work and have a great day
Leander

I do my best to comment back on my blogs. Some warrants it, and some don't. I make my decisions that way. Time factor is another real key issue on why I dont do that as often as I should.

By the way, I love the colors on your blog.

Paul - I certainly understand receiving too many comments.  (its never happened to me.. but I understand it).  I'll also admit that many comments are meaningless.  Some will just comment the minimum just for the points.  No reason to respond to those.  But its important to respond to the comments that have substance.

Sherry - Each time I have responded to your post, you have commented back.  Thank you for taking the time.

Pacita - That is a good point.  Its a form of 'pay it forward'.  My concern is really about responding to the comments made that have questions and/or conversation possibilities.

Mr or Mrs Video Tour Specialist... Not sure if you read the entire post, but I appreciate the comment.  Thanks for stopping by.

Edward - Welcome to AR.  You will certainly find helpful information here.  Its a great site to share RE ideas and network with other professionals.

Richard - Thanks for the laugh.  I have seen those types of blogs and found it funny when people comment.  But hey... it received a comment and started a conversation.  Whatever works I guess.  What bothers me is when that post becomes featured.

Marlene - That is another issue all together... posts getting featured that do not have substance.  That has happened many times and I am sure it has something to do with 'friends' within AR.  Not the AR website guru's, but just friends you have met or introduced to AR.  Many of those featured posts are very well written and informative... then they throw in a post that has no purpose.  I thought of that also when Richard posted his comment to me.

Steve - I will sometimes write a lengthy comment, depending on the topic.  If I do not receive a response, I am less likely to respond to your post in the future.  Why bother responding if you wont comment back?  Keep in mind I am still not talking about the 'thanks for sharing' comments.  If you respond to those comments, more power to you.  I respond to ALL comments made on my post.  Whether they say 'good stuff' or 'I dont agree and here is why...'

Gene - There are certainly quite a few agents that post 10+ articles a week.  Many are the agents that do not have time to respond.  Some of it is for the homeowner(s) and some is for networking.  If you take the time to post, take the time to respond to any comments.  Good luck with your posts.

John,

Hey, I understand. I disagree with "to many comments make it meaningless" I don't care if I get 5 comments or 50, I always respond to all comments.

Jon - That is exactly it.  Sharing ideas, marketing, and conversing with peers.

Tim or Pam - That is the first step of the 12 step program.  Realize there is a problem before you can address it. :-)  It doesn't make you a good or bad blogger, but I just think you are more likely to get good conversation from your post if you take the time to respond.  Maybe not to all, but to those that have taken a true interest in what you had to say.

Leander - I have yet to make a comment on your post that you have not responded to.  If you did, I would just call you. :-)  I know that I can count on you to respond which is why I try not to waste your time with 'great stuff.  thanks.'  There are many times we have gone back and forth several times because it was a subject we both had an interest in and shared our thoughts.

Loreena - You are right to pick and choose.  No real reason to respond to the basic comment.  But as I have said several times above, I think the people that took the time to read your entire post deserve some sort of acknowledgment when they comment with some detail.  Perhaps not even those that respond, but those that strike up a conversation.  Some comments are just confirming what you said was right, so you may be able to weed those out as well.  I suppose it is all a personal choice.  I respond to all and some respond to a few.

Thanks for the comment on the colors.  I owe this test all to you.  Without your direction, I would not have been able to add the color.  I look forward to posting more in the future.  It definitely dresses it up just a little bit more.

Greg - From what I can see, you and Leander are the best at responding to everyone.  Even when you had to relocate during the hurricane, you made sure to keep everyone updated and respond to the comments you received.

I so agree with you John, taking just a few seconds to respond to others who comment on our blogs is a reciprocal gesture and one I can appreciate. No matter how busy I am, I do make the time to say thanks, even if it's just that, for reading. I consider it a gift of another's time to take time out of their busy day to respond to my thoughts and words.  It's what networking is all about. And you definitely understand that!

Thank you Karen. I knew there were others out there that must have felt the same way.  If you take the time to post, take the time to comment/respond.  I take pride when someone reads my post and even more so when they subscribe. :-)  I want to be sure that people know I read what they had to say.

John - I agree entirely.  If someone leaves a comment (beyond GPTFS), I believe they deserve a response.  Sometimes it takes a few hours or maybe even a couple days, but I do try to get back to everyone.  If it is an interesting comment, I'll also check out their blog and see what they are writing.

John.... I write blogs mostly for business.... and in many cases, I get to educate the consumer at the same time....  yes, I like to network and make friends also.. but it takes a lot more time to write for all the reasons, hence why I focus on a few most of the time.

In regards to responding to comments?  For the most part, it's to show my appreciation and thanks... in many cases, because of what I write, there are usually questions asked or sometimes a debate or explanation.  I try to respond to the comments about 95% of the time... sometimes it is very hard to keep up....

Erik - I completely agree with you.  That is what I try to do as well.  I do not typically receive a large number of comments, so I can take the time to check out someone's blog and webpage.  That is not always the case, so I will at least respond to the comment.

Jeff - As you know, I have read your blogs.  I'd agree that you comment a majority of the time.  As a matter of fact, there are times when your comments are almost as long as the original post.  Your responses are filled with information as well, which is also helpful.

John, As you know I try to respond to all my comments.  I did not do this when I first started it was a post that TLW wrote about reciprocating that made the light bulb go off for me.  She said the last comment in every one of your post should be from you.  That made sense and I have developed a lot of relationships by doing that.

Cower, cower, oooh.., I think I'm good at responding although I do know there have been times that the opportunity got away from me. If I end up with comments that seem not to carry on that conversation my fuse seems to burn out. It's like you said John, we (or most) blog to create conversation and if all I'm getting is "great post" and "thank you for sharing" it kinda nips the conversation in the bud...

I appreciate your question and at times I am better than others but I can certainly tell you that I appreciate each and every comment I get...even the canned ones. Is that weird?

I agree with you Marchel.  We have had many conversations back and forth on your posts.  I have always appreciated the fact that you respond.  I had never thought about the last comment on my post being from me, but that makes sense.

I do not think its weird Deb.  You enjoy receiving comments because its nice when someone read your post.  Whether they took a long time to respond or not, they still did take some time to provide the basic GPTFS.  So, you must have touched a nerve at some point.  I personally do not like it when I post something and no one responds.  That has not happened since my first week of posts, but there are still times when I only receive 2 or 3 comments.  At least I know that someone has read them.  :-)  And by the way, I think you have done pretty well with responding to comments.

John thank you for the great post. I teach all of my students to respond to every single genuine comment. I look at comments as a way to dig deeper into a topic and build relationships with those who are participating in the conversation. I look at not responding to your comments the same way I would look at a dinner party where no one is chatting. Boring!!!
