Your thoughts on part time agents

By

I taught a contracts class last week that had thirty five students.

I always ask the students to tell me about themselves, and why they are getting into real estate.  Many are retired and looking for a second career, many were working mothers whose children are now older and they are looking to start a career.  But many say there are going to be doing real estate on a part time basis.

I was thinking how hard this profession is on a full time basis much less a part time basis.  And that the few transactions they may get really dilutes the business for all the full timers.

I was just curious as to what you thought about part time agents

Real Estate is almost impossible to do part-time. What will the part-timer do if they are at their other job and they have a buyer that is up against multiple offers with a time constraint written into the offers? Or what do they do when a buyer comes in and only has one day to look at property? There is just so much that comes up by surprise in this business that you have to be willing and able to meet the needs of your clients.

Part timers aren't that big of an issue.  It's easy to beat them just by being full time.  Soon, we all might be part timers.

I recently read an article that shines a different light on part time agents that hadn't occurred to me in the past.  I formerly thought that having part time agents in the market was O.K.  It allowed mothers who were raising children to still earn some extra income and take care of the family.  It also allows those in reitrement to spend some time enjoying that time off.  And I'm sure there are a number of other cases we can think of.  Back to the article I read.  The author emphasized the point that part time agents aren't able to keep up with what best helps their customers.  Education to keep up wiith changing real estate laws, technology, marketing, market statistics, and more...  We are here to serve and add value clients, not just earn commissions.

I don't knock the agents that choose part time, in fact I use that fact in my marketing, that I'm a full time agent that you can call during your lunch break or during your break.  I don't have the "other job" and yes I'm retired from the military after serving my country for over 20 years but young enough to no longer have a "job".  Now I have a career, and it's called a Realtor.  So, that being said, let them be part time, us full time folks will shine in the end.  Cream rises to the top, dedication is a commitment, not a task.

I often wonder how part-time agents convince clients that they can meet thir accessibility and scheduling needs.  Clients seem to want their agents to be available 24/7 so the idea of scheduling them or taking their calls around another career seems like it would be quite difficult.

Steve Hewson,

Thanks for your comments, you are correct it is difficult to keep up when you have another full time job.

Frank,

Thank you for your comments, you do put a different spin on the situation.

Shatsky,

Thank you for your comments.  I must agree they do feel like they own you 24/7.
