Who Are You and Why Do You Want To Be My Friend?

Elizabeth makes a great point with her post!

There are those who use Active Rain and other networking sites solely for the purpose of marketing their wares (products, services, etc.) to anyone and everyone who participates.

My guess is that most of you became involved with Active Rain (and other networking sites) for a variety of reasons; none of which may include have an opportunity to be solicited by a variety of persons to purchase something.

Personally, I dislike telemarketers and anyone who contacts me by phone or email to attempt to sell me goods or services.  If I have a need I will research products and make a decision to buy.  My general rule is if you contact me directly I will never buy from you.  I must admit I have fallen victim (at least once) and will never go down that road again.

I love the networking side of Active Rain and do enjoy all the information "rainers" have shared and will share over time.  I also enjoy the "online" friends I have met through Active Rain even though I have not met any of them personally.  I must admit, I have been known to speak with a "wrong number" for 20 minutes; I find it rather easy to connect with people and enjoy the exchange of information.

Interesting post Jon,

I have been grappling with this whole internet realtionship /networking dynamic for a while no. I have always been a relationship person and think I get it. And the possibilities abound with AR and the internet. I think we have to remember that relationships are not built in a couple of days with few exceptions and this is about building credibility with folks that have long standing relationships in place already and so in order to build credibility with anyone, it takes lots of hard work, persistence and consistent effort. Patience is indeed a virtue!

Hi Bo.  I certainly agree with you and have enjoyed learning so much from contributors to Active Rain; even those who are attempting to gain business from this forum.  However, I don't feel it should be used as a forum for solicitations and the vast majority of those involved here don't use it that way.  I appreciate my AR contacts and love to hear from them as well as comment on their posts.  This is a fantastic media for building positive relationships and learning from the experiences of others.

Jon, I think AR is a great place to get information, as well as make friends and acquaintances, and become more visible for marketing purposes on the net.

I see that you appear to be taking it seriously, as I have watched you rise here in Ohio on AR in a remarkably short time. Although I have never worked with you or met you yet, I would welcome the opportunity. (I am located here in Green as well). I wish you continued success. Keep up the good work!

Kevin - Thank you for your comments.  I've been following your posts also and respect your ethics.  I would love to work with you at some point in time and will include you among the lists of inspectors I present to my buyers.  I find your posts informative and have learned a lot from you.  Keep up the good work!

We ought to get together over a cold one some time.
