I am currently on a small get away weekend with my wife. Last night, we were looking at a self written review for a restaurant that we were going to.  The comments stated:

Voted #1 Restaurant for years 2000-2004 and 2006-2007.

My wife made the following comment " I wonder who beat them out in 2005".  That got me to thinking about real estate (everything gets me thinking about real estate).

We have all read profiles that include statements like "top-producer 2000-2005".  The consumer is probably wondering....what happened since 2005?  When the real estate market started cooling off, were you (Mr/Ms top producer), no longer able to be successful in real estate?  A successful real estate agent will be successful in good times as well as bad.  You must have a different strategy for the lean times.  You must educate yourself and learn to roll with the punches.

Certainly the current state of real estate has Never been seen before!

So I say, all newbies take note......If you can sell real estate now, you probably will have a successful career.  Learn all that you can and don't be afraid to make mistakes.  My dad used to say "scared money don't make money".  Chew on that one for awhile.  Take the time while the market is cool to LEARN.

Have a great and prosperous day

Leander

Leander, Yep, if you are selling now you are going to make it. When we are in a different city, I'll take the locals preference for a restaurant over the so called #1. I think buyers and sellers do the same...

Leander I think this is the best time for newbies to learn the business.  Any one could have done it when times were good.

I agree that any newbie that is doing well now will prosper in the future. The statistic is not with them as 9 out of 10 quit the first year.

Leander I agree, this is the best time to learn the business the right way. When the market turns you will be ready. Your Dad is a smart man! Thanks.

Yes, I AM selling! Currently four (4) escrows going and hopefully more to come. In business for 7 years so I know the differrence. I've upped my marketing efforts more than double and yes, it is paying off. Crying the blues is not getting you nowhere. Can't afford it? Just WALK the neigbhorhood and introduce yourself. Any contact could produce a contract. Like Nike said "Just do it!"

Business is good in Florida, but it's completely different business than last year.  Now, creativity and FLEXIBILITY rule.

Personally, I don't pay attention to those #1 Statements -- #1 in whose opinion?  Where are all those people that were polled -- who are they?  ~ Evelyn

Whether an agent is new  or experienced the key is to adapt when the market changes.  The market has changed, however, there is still plenty of opportunity out there.  Not only do we have to adjust to changes in our market, in order to thrive, we have to adjust to our competition, technology, changes in laws and regulations, changes in other industries that affect ours, etc.  Adaptation is key to survival.

Hi Leander,

Being number one or in this case a Top Producer is fine, however I don't know just how much weight clients give the effort result.

More important, your statement to newbies is right on, if they can sell in this market they will have a great career for years to come.

Leander - you are playing with fire... blogging on a weekend away with Mrs. McClain?  Gutsy move my friend.  As for the rest of your blog.. its funny that you mention the 'top producer' because I read that on websites all the time and wonder the same thing.  What has happened since then?  If you did get beat out of the top spot, how far back were you?  Did the other agent(s) beat you by a sale or did you come in last?  It stands to reason that if you are going to post how you did in previous years, you should include all of the years.  I like this question!

Being a newer agent those top producer awards were just something for me to go after.  That was my first year, after I found out that this is harder than it looks, I started to brand myself and find my niche.  I'm still working on my image and marketing plan. I had 1 sale that went south.  I have learned from that and I still take good notes.  I don't need to be #1 in this industry, I just want to really help people find their home. I got into this business to help folks turn a dream into a realityand that's what I'll focus on. So I will not let those awards scare me anymore.
