The city of Marathon has been dubbed the heart of the Florida Keys, a slogan that's obviously not as effective as it once was in drawing tourists here.
According to the Monroe County Tourist Development Council, Marathon is the only district to see bed tax revenues decline for every month this fiscal year compared with the last. The Middle Keys district, which stretches from the west end of the Seven Mile Bridge to Long Key Bridge, is down 12.4 percent from last year's $2.16 million total. That's nearly $240,000, with two months worth of revenue not yet reported.
The City of Marathon, Chamber of Commerce and local businesses need to band together in an effort to market Marathon as more than the hear to f the Florida Keys. We have one of the nicest beaches in all the Keys, Sombrero. And some great attractions like the Turtle Hospital, Crane Point and the Dolphin Research Center.
It shouldn't take a much to entice people to our slice of paradise...Marathon, Florida.
