Mark this day as another that will go down in History as an "AWESOME NEW FEATURE" added to the ActiveRain Network.  We have added and are rolling out Twitter auto-feeds for your AR Blog posts.  If you have a Twitter account already, you can set yours up now.  If you don't, you'll need to go to Twitter.com and set one up.  It will take less than a minute.

What is Twitter?  It's micro-blogging.  "Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length. Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook.  Several third parties offer posting and receiving updates via email."

Setting Up Twitter on ActiveRain:

The process for setting up your Twitter Account on ActiveRain will literally take you 10 seconds.

  • Click On "My Home" at top of this page

  • Click on the "My Settings" link on left side of page

  • Scroll down to "Twitter Setup" and enter your info

  • Put in your Twitter user name and password, Click Update

When you create a new post now (if enabled), Twitter will automatically place an announcement in your twitter feed and profile including the Title of the post as well as a link to your post.  We are looking at adding an option on the "New Post" page that allows you to select which posts you want to tweet.  Now go post in the rain, and let the outside world and your followers know.  You can follow me on Twitter here: Follow ActiveBrad

Hey Brad,

Interesting...still trying to figure this Twitter thing out for myself. Obviously I'm behind the curve on this one. I heard so much about it at BlogWorld last week I decided to sign up, now I'm not sure how to move forward. At this point, I'll just stay tuned.

Lynda - there are some great posts on AR from other members using Twitter very successfully, just search tags for "Twitter" and you'll get some really great posts from members like Missy, Rich, and many others.

BTW - nice to hear from you, hope all is well.  :-)

Hate that more feeds will infiltrate @Twitter.

Thanks once again, Brad. I have just taken on GoogleDocs, thanks to you, and now this. ou are a super asset to the AR community!

I do have a question, however, and maybe others are wondering the same thing. When these sites ask for the RSS feed for ActiveRain, what is the correct response? Example, when setting up GoogleDocs, it asks for the RSSfeed and then the link to my home page.

Brad  - Yeah for AR for their embrace of Twitter.  My two requests...

  1. Make the autobroadcast to Twitter optional.
  2. Add the twitter contact me below the Phone and Email under the users profile pic and in their profile.

Other than that - Yeah!

Gross. Now there will be a bunch of AR blogs spamming twitter.  If you don't interact on twitter but just use it to syndicate your posts you don't "get" twitter, imho.

Kim - you'll only see the feeds of those you follow. Have you any Idea how many feeds infiltrate Twitter right now?  Consumers and Businesses, even polititians have caught on and are joining and twitting.  Jeff Turner and RE Shows must post a few hundred each day, but I still follow, because Jeff is the Bomb.

Regarding the Members Only tweets, It won't work for non-members so we may have to look at customizing that along with allowing members to select the posts they want to tweet in the "create new post" screen or mode.  :-)

Example, when setting up GoogleDocs, it asks for the RSSfeed and then the link to my home page.

Frances - The RSS feed is a button/chicklet you'll find on your sidebar.  If you right click your mouse on it, you can copy the link location to provide to any other site. There is also an RSS icon in your URL address bar of your browser.  EXAMPLE: Mine would be http://activeRain.com/Blogs/ActiveBrad/RSS  Just replace my user name with yours and that's your RSS feed to your AR Blog.  Hope that helps.  :-)

1:09pm • #28

Mike - excellent suggestions.  I think we should add a box to check when creating new Blog posts.  Adding it to the sidebar is also an excellent idea, I know members can do that now by adding a "Follow Me" link or by adding the Twitter Widget like I have on my sidebar.  Great ideas and suggestions, always love the feedback and comments. Thanks.  :-)

1:12pm • #29

Brad- I like Mikes Idea too!  I just finished taking the past 2 hours to get my feedburner all working properly.

1:17pm • #30

Gross. Now there will be a bunch of AR blogs spamming twitter. If you don't interact on twitter but just use it to syndicate your posts you don't "get" twitter, imho.

Maureen - with all due respect, I have to disagree.  Twitter is also used as a tool to share information with those that follow you.  Engaging in Micro-Blogging is just one aspect of how twitter works.  I don't see this a only syndicating posts, I see it as a tool to help members remove one step that are doing this already (like me) and I also see it as a way to drive more viewers to your Blog which potentially increases relationships and business.  Many members are already using this as a tool anyway, why not make it easier for them to do more by doing less.  Thanks for sharing your comments and opinion, they are always welcomed on my posts. :-))

Here's some stats on twitter members, isn't this already a lot of SPAM by the rest of the world?  Why should AR members be left out in all the fun?  LOL~

Brad...

I'm baaa-aaack :)  Ok... y'all know I love ActiveRain dearly.... but there was a lot of conversation this afternoon on Twitter after I started discussing it.  I like what Mike Mueller said ^^^ up there....

- Make it an option per blog post, like your other checkboxes maybe?

Every post is not 'twitter worthy' especially with the member's only ones.  You are right - there are tons of feeds that go into twitter.  I'm not mentioning names, but a few statements today:

- If the people from AR that aren't using twitter just start posting feeds, they are getting unfollowed without thought.

- If people are posting feeds and don't participate - GONE!

- People that post a lot on ActiveRain I will unfollow.

I follow certain newsfeeds that have random updates. The ones that post 15 feeds in a row - GONE. The politicians that I follow - same thing. I love when friends/followers tell us on Twitter that they have a new post (be it on AR or elsewhere) - but not every single time.

Again, I think it is a good thing for ActiveRain and the writers. I didn't diss that - just looking from a @Twitterite - it stinks that people won't know what they are doing - and use the button - then they'll miss out on Twitter and many will unfollow.

Kim - you make some great points, I would hope that people would only use this option that understand Twitter and how it works.  In addition to being selective on which posts to promote on Twitter, hopefully they will engage and see the value of micro-blogging there as well.  We'll have to see how this plays out, but I think it's a step in the right direction.  Eventually, it would be nice to have the other social networks available as an option to "Feed" information to as well.

10:37am • #76

Debi - I knew if anyone could figure out the code in that HTML, it would be Mike.  Glad you got that fixed. :-)

Dora and Vincent - It should be nearly instant.  I noticed my last post took about 2 minutes to show up on twitter, this post showed up instantly.

10:41am • #78

Lisa - you can set it up with whatever account you want.  It won't mess anything up on twitter as it is just a feed to twitter, you do not have to be logged into twitter, by using the feature on your my settings page, it logs into twitter for you. Just use the account that works best for you.  :-)

Gabe Strom did a video about Twitter, this might help some of you not familiar with the micro-blogging social network platform.  Using twitter as a tool and understanding how it really works is important before you just go sending all your AR post feeds and announcements there. You should use what Jeff Turner referred to on a phone call last night, as the 12:1 ratio.  12 tweets about others, 1 tweet about self.

Loved that we had some time to chat Jeff, always do, thanks.  :-)

8:11am • #91

Dora - the jury is still out on the "members only" posts being twittered. I know there are many REALTORS® and Industry Pros on Twitter, but if they are not a member of AR, they get a webpage that isn't very welcoming, maybe that Non Member page should have the option to sign up on AR?  Still thinking that one through. If I clicked on a twitter feed link and it brought me to a page I couldn't view all the time, after a while, I'd probably stop following that person.  Just a thought while the jury is out to lunch...make that drinks. LOL~  :-)

8:18am • #93

@Kim - I think Chris Brogan did come up with it first, and Jeff was just sharing the concept and idea behind it with me.  I think it's a great idea and should be applied by all, unfortunately, some people don't get how it works and end up hurting their efforts more than helping their business and relationships.

Oh no! Technology overload! How in the world do I keep up? When do I sell real estate?! Oh, the pain...the pain :-)
7:18am • #112

Tamara - Sell Real Estate first, then come back and share with others how you did it and your experiences, your discoveries, all that you learn from your efforts, that's the best way to keep up and sell Real Estate at the same time as learning.  The technology piece is great, it's a wonderful tool, but selling Real Estate is obviously your #1 priority.

I also just finally set up a twitter account too and updated ActiveRain settings. Jean, its ok - it’s not just an age thing, it’s a tech thing - I recently discovering all this social networking applications. Brad- just checked out your twitter - that’s lots of tweets.

Jeff - having a twitter account is a must in the social media and networking world. Learning the network and the environment is the next most important item on your list, at least it should be.  :-)

9:54am • #119

Debbie - I like this feature too.  I think using the suggested ratio's of different posts to twitter is the key.  You can't just twitter when you do a new post.  I think many will miss the business and personal connection if that's all they do.  :-)

9:56am • #120

Jean - it's ok if you're 73, the tech stuff will never go away.  Good for you that you're plugging away at all this techno stuff.  You're keeping up with the fast paced world and that is very cool.  :-)

9:58am • #121

Eva - I have only been on there for a few months now.  Rumor has it that just like email, everyone will eventually have a twitter account.  I wonder if it will just replace IM and text messaging?  Why not, it's FREE and so much more effective.  :-)

Thanks for the info about TWITTER. I have been "TWEETING" for a couple of months now and it the greatest social networking tool that I have found since ACTIVE RAIN! It is too much fun and absolutely habit forming. It is a great community and can be customized to best suit one's own personal interests and needs. Follow me @RealEstateRon I highly recommend it to everyone. HAPPY TWEETING!

Wondering if anyone can help me out.  I've set my username and password in Activerain setting for my Twitter account.  But when I go to Twitter, it shows none of my activerain posts or anything from y active rain account.

Anythings I can check to get this working?

Easy, peasy.  Thanks!  I'm still new to Twitter, but figure it can only help in the long run.

3:57pm • #132

Rocha Team - there are a TON of tutorials on AR how to use twitter.  Just search Twitter on AR, or go join the group here on AR.  Both will help you out incredibly.

11:25pm • #134

Be sure to check out the videos in the comments of this post too.  They will help as well.

11:25pm • #135

Pam - make sure you have your username and password right, nothing will happen till you do your next post, and it won't go to twitter if its a members only post.  (unless you check the box in setup)  Let me know if you have any problems with it when you do your next post.

11:28pm • #136

Jake - there is a Local Twitter site that will find only those within x amount of miles of you, I think it's called Twinkle or something like that.  I know there are some links to it in my Diigo.com bookmarks if you want to check it out.

11:30pm • #137

Jon - nothing will happen till you post the next time.  It doesn't syndicate all your AR posts to twitter like an RSS feed, it will only affect what you post from now on.  Hope that makes sense.

11:34pm • #138

Lori - help is right here, easy...easy!  (Big Smile)  Start with a deep breathe, exhale through the nose, now take a couple aspirin, and call me in the morning.  Serious, I'll help you set it up and get it working for you fair enough?  :-)

11:36pm • #139

Thanks for the update.  No more excuses.  Now it is too easy to ignore.  HA.

Brad, I must be doing something wrong.  My twitter settinga are correect - not protected.

My active rain settings appear correct.

But it does not work.  I posted to my blog and nothing in twitter.

I'm wondering about this wording:  "When you create a new post now (if enabled)" from your post.  When I post to my blog I click blog then click "New Blog Entry".  Is "create a new post now" something different and why would it not already be enabled?

I'm lost.

This still doesn't work for me and I've been posting new blogs for a while now.  I had one post show up in twitter once, but nothng since.

I've changed my password, logged out, then back in to make sure I had it right, updated it in active rain, and still nothing.

I had an email from active rain support about it and then never got back to me after I let them know it still was not working.

12:57pm • #150

Paul and Jon - we are aware of the twitter component not working at the present time.  It's not you, it something we are working on to get corrected. We will have it fixed along with many of the other issues being fixed right now.  See Jeff Corbett's featured post today regarding the network and the corrections we are making and why.  Thanks for your patience, this too shall pass.  :-)

Hi Brad, seems like an interesting new feature. I signed up for Twitter for the first time because it sounds like synergy between Twitter and AR.
4:25pm • #152

Brian - synergy is a good thing.  Be sure to also check out the "TwitterLike Function" now located on City pages of ActiveRain.  I don't think alot of members even know it's there.  It's not twitter, but very similar and could be useful to you in your area.  Hope you'll check it out.  :-)

I must admit that I do have a twitter and mysteriously have a few dozen followers, but have never really figured out how to use it or subscribed to anyone else.  Not sure I really want to hear updates about other people and what they are doing.

Brad, If I have the feed to Twitter set up, what happens to my Members Only posts? Do they get fed, too? I am going to do some research, but sometimes you can save a lot of time by going right to the expert!

Never mind, Brad. I just went in to my Twitter settings on AR and saw that there is an option NOT to share member only posts.  You guys think of everything!
