Ever since I was old enough to understand history, I've always been fascinated with what happened on any specific day in years gone by. Here's what happened on September 30:

  • 1982 - "Cheers" premiered on NBC.

  • 1962 - James Meredith succeeded in enrolling at the University of Mississippi, "Ole Miss." It was his fourth attempt. Meredith was a black student.
  • 1955 - Actor James Dean was killed in a head-on car collision in Cholame, California. The two-lane road from Paso Robles to Cholame was known at the time as "Blood Alley" due to the high number of car crashes, mostly head-on collisions.

  • 1954 - The Nautilus, the Navy's first nuclear-powered vessel, was commissioned.
  • 1953 - Earl Warren, Governor of California, was nominated to be Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
  • 1947 - First televised World Series. The two teams are two of the best-known franchises in all of sports: the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Yankees won in seven games, capturing their eleventh championship.
  • 1938 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement which allowed Nazi Germany to annex the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.
  • 1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season, a record that stood for more than 70 years. For the record, the opponent was the Washington Senators, and the pitcher was Tom Zachary.
  • 1791 - Wolfgang Mozart's "The Magic Flute" premiered in Vienna, Austria. "The Magic Flute" was Mozart's last opera composition. Mozart himself conducted the orchestra at the premiere and his sister-in-law performed "Queen of the Night."

We can learn from history if we'll just take time to study it.

Hey, Betina. I do read Russel's blog because he's my Partner. I know he reads mine, too. We're in two different professions so our business blogs probably won't overlap. However, we do have many of the same interests, which is why we read each other's blogs so that we don't duplicate content. I don't see any "history" blog posts in his blogs, although I know that it's been on his mind. I think he's going to do some music and nature blogs this week.

Hi Jim:  I enjoyed the videos, especially the music.  I enjoy your's and Russel's blogs (and I really think Zoey is a cutie and a great spokescat).  Hope to hear more about what you are up to soon.
