Ever since I was old enough to understand history, I've always been fascinated with what happened on any specific day in years gone by. Here's what happened on September 30:
-
1982 - "Cheers" premiered on NBC.
-
1954 - The Nautilus, the Navy's first nuclear-powered vessel, was commissioned.
-
1953 - Earl Warren, Governor of California, was nominated to be Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court.
-
1947 - First televised World Series. The two teams are two of the best-known franchises in all of sports: the New York Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers. The Yankees won in seven games, capturing their eleventh championship.
-
1938 - British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement which allowed Nazi Germany to annex the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia.
-
1927 - Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season, a record that stood for more than 70 years. For the record, the opponent was the Washington Senators, and the pitcher was Tom Zachary.
-
1791 - Wolfgang Mozart's "The Magic Flute" premiered in Vienna, Austria. "The Magic Flute" was Mozart's last opera composition. Mozart himself conducted the orchestra at the premiere and his sister-in-law performed "Queen of the Night."
We can learn from history if we'll just take time to study it.
