What Does Your Mailbox Say About You?

Mailboxes

Mailboxes are everywhere...everyone has one.  Some are big, some are small, some are ugly and some make you turn your head as you drive by.

Mailboxes

Some make you smile.

Is a mailbox a reflection of the person that lives in a house?

Do you even have an individual mailbox where you live or is it in a block of boxes? I suppose it depends on what part of the country you live in.

Don't mailboxes all serve the same function?  To hold your bills until you get home to take them out?

Some people get their mail everyday.  I know people that only check their mailbox once a week.

Mailboxes

Do people that have fun mailboxes enjoy getting their mail more than, say, someone who has a plain mailbox?

Sometimes mailboxes bring us good news, cheer, happy family news, but not always.

I just have a plain mailbox painted a creamy yellow, just like the color of my house.  Does that mean I'm plain and not fun?  Hmmm...have to think on that one.

If it were up to my 13 year old it would be painted bright red. She's already asked me twice if she can do that.  I'm sure the homeowners association would love that!

Is there anything special about your mailbox?

Nice post -- mailboxes are distinctive, and are like house signs (people give names to their houses in my area, as opposed to just an address).    It is a "signature" of who lives there.

Hi Bonita,  It's interesting to me to hear about different areas mailboxes.  Here in Melbourne Florida we have mailboxes all over the place.  I suppose I never really thought about some have to really travel to find individual boxes.  Good to know.  Thanks for the info.

Hi Li,  How are you today?  Hope business is going well for you right now.  We do find many distinctive mailboxes here where we live.  That's interesting that people give names to their homes, as a signature of who lives there.  I have seen that in the mountains of North Carolina where my parents live in the summer.  Thanks so much for the comment, and so nice to hear from you again!

Hi Sandy, love the mail boxes. I live where all the mailboxes are the ones put up by the Postal Service because the mail is safer that way. I remember, being an older than dirt person, when we didn't worry about someone stealing our identies, now it is a constant worry. Thanks for the enjoyment.

Sandy- Yeah, as sad plain and pathetic my mailbox is, its actually better than his rusty (used to be white) mailbox with a hole where the flag used to be lol. We do have some different boxes around town here and there that I have seen in my travels.... a donkey facing the house (you can imagine where the opening to put the mail is lol), a maize and blue custom UofM (Michigan) helmet shaped mailbox, a lighthouse, and my fiancees parents have a mailbox of what their house looked like 27 years ago when they bought the house and put the mailbox up lol

Hi Fred, We keep hearing from the comments coming in that everyone has a plain mailbox.  Where the heck are all the people with the fun mailboxes?  That's what I want to know?  Now, I have a hard time believing that YOU are older than dirt -tell me then whose picture you're using in your blog - huh -got'cha didn't I?  See, you're not older than dirt!  Funny I just got my new business cards delivered yesterday.  My picture on them was taken 12 years ago (how time flies). My blogs all have my updated picture on them. You are correct, today we must watch our mail and our identities also. Thanks for checking in.

Hi Chris, Now I have to say, I would love to see the donkey mailbox -that has to be hysterical!  I just think it's fun to see what people have for a box.  Well, my yellow cream colored mailbox no longer has a red flag, I just went ahead and painted the flag yellow.  I suppose it's really time for a new box -but why spend the money - a new coat of paint makes it look perfect!  Thanks for sharing!

My mail box is across the street. If it where in my yard I would make it something special. Not sure what. But I did love the photo of the  mini house mail box. I am sure it would be that type for me. My Husband would pick one of those crazy fish mail boxes. So yes your mail box does tell a story.

Hi Sharon, I know that some mailboxes are set across the street for some people. No fun to do anything special with it there. I have seen some of those crazy fish mailboxes that you are talking about.  We have a lot of marine life and fish and nautical themes because we have so many bodies of water around us here in Melbourne.  I have seen some really neat boxes.  I do agree, that your mailbox tells a story. Thanks for sharing!

Sandy,

I had to laugh at the turtle.  What does that say?  My mailbox is lucky to be standing at the end of the day due to faulty construction on the part of the person who hit them with their car.  If he is a carpenter....houses are going to be crooked...

Hi Ann, You crack me up everytime I read one of your comments!  Thanks!  Hmmm...what does the turtle say...well, let's think about this...the house is 2 blocks from the beach and people on the beach love the sea turtles that come up on the beach and lay eggs...so maybe it says that they love living on the beach and they love the turtles (oh, heck, I don't know - I'm guessing LOL). Someone hit your mailbox with their car?  Uh oh - I have two tenants that got their mailboxes smashed with baseball bats.  Nice, huh?  Does that say they live in a dangerous neighborhood, or does it say that the people that hit them love playing baseball (kidding). Thanks for the laugh!  You're too funny!

In this, and in our last, neighborhood, we have the old fashioned boxes that are right on the house, so the mail carriers do all the work bringing mail right to our door.  I really appreciate that!

Hi Suzanne, Boy that's nice for you!  We have some older neighborhoods where the box is still on  the house.  However, the post office is trying to do away with those boxes.  So, they are sending notices when the home changes hands and asking that a box be put out on the curb.  Some people are not real receptive to that idea.  They like the old fashioned way better!   Thanks for sharing and have a great week!

Sandy,

Maybe they do like baseball.  I cannot comment about the neighborhood due to the Federal Fair Housing Law.....

Yes, my mailbox along with everyone elses on the street by an un-neighborly neighbor who tried to deny he did it.

Hi Ann, Okay, we'll just say they love playing baseball with mailboxes then.  Uh-oh, sounds like you've got a bit of difficulty with a mailbox-hating neighbor.  If I were you, I'd watch out for him (LOL).  Take care and have fun.  Talk to you soon!

Hi Sandy ... Mine is regulation black ... boring I guess.  Snow plow hits it every so often.  And everytime I put up a new one, some idiot hits it ... not destroying it but making it difficult to open the door.  So, I never have a nice new mailbox.  No point in buying anything other than your standard inexpensive mailbox.

Hi Marie, Your comment cracked me up. I guess if I had an idiot that kept hitting my box, then I wouldn't buy anything special either!  Why bother...all that comes is bills... and bills aren't fun anyway, are they?  Thanks for sharing and glad to hear from you!

Sandy,

Yes, I tend to stay away from that one.  He seems to be a bad driver....

I haven't been fond of my mailbox since I moved in 3 1/2 years ago.  Now I'm wondering why it's still there ... another thing for my TO DO list.

Hi Sandi, Sometimes our 'to do' list just gets so long, doesn't it?  Good luck on getting a new one.
