I have been waiting to write this post for some time now, and I mulled over the headline for a long time.  Ultimately, I decided not to try to get too cute with the title.  Instead, I thought the direct route made more sense for my friends and acquaintances who would be interested to hear this terrific Crouch family news.

I have been anxious to announce this for awhile, but I wanted to wait until we were a bit further along with the pregnancy.  Pam, my wife, had her second obstetrician appointment today, and the baby is growing normally and doing fine - heartbeat, bloodwork, etc.  We are about 12 and a half weeks along right now, and the due date is April 11th. 2009.  As you already know, the likelihood of the baby being born on that actual day is somewhat slim, although my son was born on his actual due date.  Since we are finishing the first trimester, we both felt comfortable sharing this info with you guys.  I might have done it sooner, but Pam's point (which is valid) has been, "Who do you feel comfortable telling if there is a problem?"

Thankfully, we have already been blessed with three healthy, fun, smart, awesome kids, and we are excited about our new addition.

I did share this news with a VERY small group of friends from ActiveRain.  I want to thank those of you who have kept this secret for several weeks now.  If I didn't tell you, please don't feel bad, because I tried to limit it to a very select group, both online and locally.  I have to talk to somebody about it, right?

I actually found out on August 12th myself, which was the same day I wrote this review of a local restaurant:

Date Night at Beluga Japanese (Pictures, too!) (LOCALISM FEATURED)

One of the reasons that I wrote that post was to commemorate the date that I found out about our newest baby, along with the location.  Also, the pictures were taken in the seconds after Pam told me.  This was why I switched my profile picture to the one you see now.  Every time I look at it, I know what made me smile in that way.

My wife has a history of letting me know in some very cool ways.  With our first baby, she managed to inform me via fortune cookie by creating a custom "fortune" and getting it into the cookie that she handed me.  It said:

Roses are red, Violets are blue   I'm gonna be a parent, and so are you!

I still get a little misty-eyed about that day just over ten years later.  This time, she brought her camera so that "you can write a review and we can take some pictures for your blog" (she knows me too well).  After she took a couple, we reviewed them, and she started scrolling through some other pictures of our kids.  I started looking, too, then I saw a picture that looked oddly familiar: a positive pregnancy test.

"What is that?", she calmly asked.

"It's a pregnancy test.  When was this taken?", I asked.

PAUSE.

"Are you pregnant?!"

No words needed - just a nod and a smile from my beautiful wife.

Pam and I are both only children, having been largely raised by our moms, so the second, and third, and (now) fourth child are foreign ground for us, but we are thankful to God for another rich blessing.

On another note, PLEASE pray for my wife, who feels miserably sick and tired much of the time.

She has notoriously bad morning sickness, which is really more like "all the time sickness" in her case.  Obviously, we are hoping for a reprieve this time around, but (her words today, not mine) if the only result is her own suffering, it could be worse.  At least the baby is okay, and the end really does justify the means in this case.  Nevertheless, I would love for her to feel better.  She is taking an anti-nausea medication for the first time, and it seems to help some days, but not always.

In case you were wondering, both of our older kids (9 and 7) want a baby brother to even things out around the house (two boys, two girls), plus they only have a little sister (2 and a half), so they don't know what a boy would be like yet.  Since this post could be read for years to come by my family, I will not state a preference for gender here.  Instead, I will lean on the more traditional statement that as long as the baby's healthy, I don't really care either way.

For those of you who are wondering why we could possibly want another baby, here are my best reasons:

Much congratulations to you and your wife!!! Hope that she does feel better soon. With my first child, I had morning sickness (all day sickness) pretty much for the first three months.  That baby is 28 years old now and still the light of my life- smart, beautiful, funny, and a pleasure to be around.  So whatever I went through for a few months, it was well worth it for the rest of my life.

Take good care of your wife, she must be very special.

TO ALL: Thank you so much for the kindness and support that I have seen in each of your comments.  I wish I could say that the sickness part will disappear after the first three or four months, but that has not been the pattern at all with our first three.  With my son, she was literally sick until after the delivery happened.   Her diet was very limited because nothing would stay down, so she jokes that our son is made of orange soda and Ramen noodles.

As I said, the sacrifice is worth it, and that is according to HER, not simply my own opinion on the matter.  After all, at the end, you get a new person!  We have tried almost every remedy suggested here, including peppermint, chamomile, ginger, B6, and she is taking an anti-nausea medication some days which seems to work intermittently.

It is really hard for me to see her suffer so much, so I do really appreciate your prayers over the next few months, both for the health of the baby and for my wife's health, strength and energy.

MARILYN - I am going to find one of those bracelets you mentioned - why not, right?

Thanks, everyone, for your prayers, and I'm trying to have faith that this sickness will end soon.  Even when I take medicine for the nausea, I can still feel pretty weak and sick.  So far, I've lost significant weight, but it has slowed down a lot, and I'm able to eat a bit more.

We love kids, and are really looking forward to another baby.  It used to be that whenever we would ask our oldest how many kids we should have in our family, he would always say, "ten."  So, not sure if we have time for that many, but, almost halfway there...

Paul, my unborn child accepts your challenge of a footrace, but wants to defer it until he grows feet.

Jason- congratulations to you and your wife!  I got a bit teary eyed reading this!  It brought back memories of our beginnings of a family.  When I told my husband I was pregnant with our second child, he didnt believe me.  Even when I showed him the pregnancy test!  He thought I did it on the computer!

Photo, by the way!  It's a keeper!

Congrats!

We have 4 kids and it is so much fun.  We wouldn't change it for the world!  I pray that your wife starts to feel better soon.  I was the sickest, by far, with my 4th one.  I even had vertigo, so the 2nd 1/2 of my pregnancy I couldn't lay down and close my eyes w/ out feeling dizzy.  Slept w/ 2 to 3 pillows under me and on the couch alot of nights.

Congratulations!  Can I babysit?

Pam, I was sick the entire time with both my kids.  Maybe that is why I only had two when I wanted four.  :-)

Jason - Congratulations! I hopes your wife's sickness doesn't leave her too miserable.  I noticed that your wife mentioned 10 as your son's recommended goal.  This would be amazing, but you better pick up the pace.  Five year intervals just won't get it done :)

Pam - Oh sure, start adding conditions.  Next thing I know, you'll claim that being tethered to an umbilical cord will be a hindrance as well.  I see your game.

Congratulations, you should post this in the Family Ties group. (LOL)

Just thought I would try one of those cut & paste comments, but I guess you don't deserve that. I'm glad your family is growing as it will give you many more funny posts as the child grows up and gives you funny little sayings that you can share with the world.

Congrats to you & your wife, Jason.  I came from a family with 4 siblings & have lots of good memories. We are still close & are now sharing taking care of our 87 yr old parents-a group effort.

Crackers before even getting out of bed helped my morning sickness (lots of crumbs in the bed, tho).

Congratulations Jason & Pam!    Hopefully the morning sickness will pass quickly :)        Just curious - did she break the news about the other two over a Japanese meal too?

A couple of people asked about Pam's methods for breaking the news to me.  This time, I was looking through photos on her camera and there was a picture of a positive pregnancy test in the mix.  She thought it was more creative (and hygenic) than bringing the actual test to dinner.

With our first, she told me over Chinese food (in a fortune cookie).  The second time, she just woke me up excitedly to let me know.  The third time, she tried leaving the test around in various places so that I would find it, but I was too dense and kept missing it, so she sort of threw it at me one night when I was watching TV.

Jason- Congratulations! I am so happy for you. I loved being pregnant, actually. The miracle growing inside of me no matter how many times it was, was always so amazing. Watching the birth of a child is a testiment that there is a GOD. 4 is a fun number. I was always better with the even numbers of kids than odds.

The jokes that people made of my having so many kids used to bother me when I was younger. Now they don't. I just say they are jealous really! Boy, did I get my share, especially when I was pregnant.

Giving God's children a physical body is a holy and righteous calling. Motherhood is next to Godhood. It is the most sacred of all our duties to God.

Your wife is in my prayers.

If it turns out ugly and you all don't want it - I'll be happy to take him/her off your hands. As much as I'm jonesing for a baby, I would gladly skip the nausea to get to the main act. Hmmmm.... what should we name him?

Seriously... as the official holder of the name book - I get first dibs on naming Loveseat Jr.!

Jennifer - I actually have a boy's name picked out already, but not a middle name.  If it's a boy, I want to name him after my close friend David who died six months ago.  However, I am open to suggestions for middle names and girl names!

I don't know how I missed this post! Congatulations to you and Pam and your kids on the newest member of the family. This is *the* best news possible. Better than new business or more money or a bigger house or 500 comments, this is your life! I couldn't be happier for you. When I first saw your new profile picture, I *knew* you had a certain "look" on your face .....;-)

That's so great, Jason!  Congratulations to both of you!

I feel your wife's pain.  I had the same thing, only worse, throughout by entire pregnancy.  That's why in our family, there will be only one.  In that respect, I guess it was a good thing that Adam was born so early, LOL!  They have morning sickness lollipops now, she could try lemon drops, ginger snaps, and little things that look like a watch that you wear on your wrist.  They emit a slight electric pulse on your pressure point that can help with nausea and morning sickness.  I tried them all and was on the medicine.  Poor thing, I really feel for her!

BTW, Adam was born April 12.  It's a lucky day!

CONGRATS!!!

Here is a surprise gift idea for your wife and child when they come home...check out StorkNews.com

Then click on the Locator in the upper right corner to see if a franchise serves your area.  My wife and I came home to find this great surprise waiting for us and it was awesome!  WE liked it so much that when we found out the business for sale locally, we bought it!  Everytime I put one up, the parents just love it.

If they don't have a franchise to serve your area, you can still get the little bundle that hangs from the beak with the baby's birth information sent to you by mail and hang it on the door to help announce the birth to neighbors and friends!  Congrats again to you and your family!
