John joined our office in the summer of 2005 and always had a great attitude and I love seeing that in any Realtor but especially in new Realtors.  It reminds me of a "Rookie" showing up at spring training camp and all his family, coaches and co-players are waiting with anticipation to see what this young person can do.  John had been with another company for 6 months when he joined our office.

Around the 1st week of January of 2006 I was talking to John and asked him what he was doing. John replied he was working on his goals for 2006.  I asked him how he was doing with goal setting and he replied that he had just finished up.  I then asked "so do you have an income goal"?  John replied that he did indeed.  I said "Don't tell me what it is but cross it out and double it".  He said what???!!!

I proceed to tell John about Elaine Northrup Adversity - One Lady's Incredible Story of Conquering It  and he was amazed by her story.  He said he had never heard of such a thing and he thanked me for sharing the story and for sharing it with such enthusiasm.

I would check with John off and on throughout the year and around the 1st part of December 2006 I asked him how he was doing with his new goal.  John replied that he calculated he would be only $30,000 shy of the goal he set.  In other words he had doubled his goal as I had asked him and he came only $30,000 shy of that new goal! John nearly doubled the 1st goal he had set for himself.

John thanked me and shared with me that his previous broker had laughed at him when he shared with her his goal for 2005 saying his goal was unrealistic.  He said he would not work for someone that did not believe in him and left her office a month after she laughed at him.

Many of us are limited by our own thinking or someone else's thinking.  Ever hear of the saying "A new Realtor won't earn much the 1st two years"?  I hate that comment!  I don't want anyone telling anyone that they can't do something.  If someone does not believe in themselves that's O.K. but I don't want them taking someone else down with them.

I honestly believe that we place limitations on ourselves as well.  I know I have in the past and when I stopped living with self-imposed limitations and started thinking about what was possible my world started to change and many positive things started to happen.

Let's be a cheerleader for those around us, even if there is nothing in it for us. Let's give the Johns of the world wings to fly.

George,

Great post!  Personally, I take a lot of pride in the accomplishments of the "newbies" in our office, and will make it a point to congratulate them whenever they score a coup.  I remember how important it was to me as a rookie (and how infrequently I got feedback from the more experienced agents!).  Not only are you lucky to have someone so driven on your team, but John is very fortunate to have joined your office and have you as a manager!

Thanks Antoinette....I am not a manager dear.  I had my own office at one time and was a Broker but for the past several years have been just an associate broker with no management responsibilites.  I just believe in people and help everyone I meet and try to help them believe in themselves.  Have a great weekend.

George what a great story. My first broker in training told me that my goal was to high and that I would never be able to have an average sale price as high as I was setting. I refused to changed it and beat it that year. You sometimes have to be your own cheerleader.

Ashley...congratulations on not listening to your first Broker and for exceeding your goal!  Don't ever let anyone tell you that you can't!  If you have not read Elaine Northrup's story please do...it is amazing.  Have a great weekend.

Sounds like John not only had SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely) goals but was also smart enough to surround himself with only those whose beliefs supported him. Your guidance and encouragement to him is admirable, and in today's world, too rare. Hopefully many in the Rain can duplicate your example. Thanks for sharing this!

George, what a great post! We need more like you out there. I'm not in the real estate business as a Broker or Agent, but in the Escrow field. When I first started the biz, I was told that by my first year, I would probably quit because the job was too demanding, etc. Well, that was in 1996. Unfortunately, I didn't have any cheerleaders and had to take it upon myself to learn my way up. Now that I am up here, I make it my goal to cheer on the rookies in my field. And they love me for it!

Give me a G! Give me an E! Give me an O! Give me an R! Give me a G! Give me an E! Goooo George!!!!

God Bless! ;)

Right on!  We've got a great cheerleader that is always looking out for each of us in our office.  She will bend over backward to help someone succeed and in turn has seen a tremendous increase in her business as well.

If you give encouragement, you will also recieve.

There are actually some brokers/managers that do not encourage greatness from their newer associates.  This way might stay around longer to do floor time and fill a roster spot.

The brokers who are secure in their abilites will be the ones who not only encourage, but demand greatness from all they encounter.

George -- Thank you for a wonderful, inspiration post for the Easter/Passover Holiday -- One must have dreams -- and then to make those dreams come true, one must have goals, and to reach those goals, one needs a team to be the wind beneath their wings!

Thanks for sharing Elaine's story again, George, I missed it the first time.

The wonderful thing about life is that there are many places to find cheerleaders - if not in your own family and circle of friends, or at work, there are places like Active Rain and many other real estate groups I belong to, that  have fantastic cheerleaders for us.

I love the advice you gave him.

In a post I wrote last year I said that the market was flat and I set a goal of doubling my business in 2007.  If you do not have that goal you can not make it.

George, this post is truly awesome.  It hit me hard as i was reading the story.  I just made it through my first year in real estate.  In November i had sat down with somebody who's been in the business for a while, somebody i thought knew a whole lot more about being realistic in real estate, due to his position and years in the business. When i presented my business plan to him and he saw the $ sign i had written down for my goal this year, he said "that is unrealistic, you're setting yourself up for failure and a lot of people end up getting out of the business too early because they set their goals too high and fail.  It eats them up."

I went from smiling to frowning because i thought, oh no I'm being unrealistic.  It put the fear in me, because there is no way I'm going to fail in this business.  I won't let that happen.  Then he said to me, "take the $ amount you made last year and double that, now that is realistic".  So you know what happened?  I limited myself.  Sure it's September and I'm only $15,000 from my goal, but I'm not satisfied.  If i would have stuck to my guns and not let his idea change what i had in my mind, i know without doubt i would have met my initial goal.
