An extraordinary evening in Nashville with Ken Burns

The documentary film maker /producer /director was the key note speaker at Belmont University last night here in Nashville. Mr. Burns who has won many accolades and awards for his documentary films, like the Civil War, Baseball, Jazz, and World War II among many, many more, gave a truly inspiring talk that lasted for more than an hour.

He began the night with a short piece from his "The War" series in his famous style known as The Ken Burns Effect and played to a beautiful original song about the dedication of our greatest citizens on being Americans sung by Norah Jones. It was a perfect introduction to his subject of history and memory from the point of view of the participants and unsung heroes of our past and how their sacrifice is quickly becoming a faded memory in our collective consciousness.

He invoked the spirit of Abraham Lincoln (the greatest US President, in his opinion) and how his words and actions helped shape our country and "paradoxically" tore the nation apart in order to put it back together. It was an eloquently crafted speech. Mr Burns has a command of the English language unmatched by any writer or scholar and his delivery was passionate and yet at the same time emotional and convincing. Like a true historian, it was not sentimental nor nostalgic, but factual and viewed through the mirror of events that could only be seen through the eyes of an unbiased historian.

It was truly a remarkable evening. If you have not had the opportunity to see him and he comes even close to your town, see him! In lieu of that, check out his documentaries. His view of history and unique way of telling its story is worth every minute of the experience.

Have a great day!

I believed that I like "The Civil War" the best with "Baseball" as a close second. This man is a creative genius, and all of his films are mesmerizing!

I am a history buff and a voracious reader. I must say that I have not seen any of his films but with your recommendation I will look for them.

I to am a fan of history, and I have decided that Lincoln may have been one of the major causes of the war that was totally unnecessary. The war was about power and money, the slave issue was just ammo to get it started. The large majority of people in the south didn't have slaves, but they were attacked anyway. Remember it was the civilians who were attacked, not the army.

I used to agree with most of our scholars, but now I know that they had different criteria for management than I would have. I would say that based on the results during his short time in office, he may have been the biggest failure as a president.
