During a home inspection in Chesterfield Township MI the other day I decided to get over my fear of heights, and take photos of John Seely of WIN home inspections as he tackled investigating the roof.  (Psst, John, update your website :-)

Once before I photographed John on the roof of a home, (in Grosse Pointe Farms) but my hands shook and my palms were sweaty and I had to turn away from what he was doing.  (For the record, the buyer client felt the same way.  He had to turn away and not watch.)

Here is another good example of why I feel home inspectors are so valuable to home buyers. (Also why I do what I do and won't consider being a home inspector. )

Roof of a home in Chesterfield Township MI

There isn't much sitting room on the roof of this home, unless you sit at the very top.

Thankfully John is used to doing this, and I can stand safely on the ground watching him.  (Palms sweating, hands shaking)

John Seeley flew like Superman up on the roof

Frankly, I wouldn't get to the top rung of that ladder, let alone climb above it to sit where John is sitting.

Alert to home buyers: This is how a good home inspector checks out the roof.

Kids:  Don't try this at home.

You couldn't pay me enough to do this.

(I had to hold my breath while he was walking around on the roof)

It boggles my mind that not only does he get to the top of the roof and walk around, but that he carries his small laptop with him to take notes.

(I have trouble chewing gum and walking at the same time.)

What do I do while the home inspector is on the roof?

Never a boy scout but always prepared

Who says my being there for a home inspection isn't important?

John Seeley of WIN Home Inspections covers the Metro Detroit area (Macomb County, St. Clair County, Wayne County, Oakland County, Lapeer County and Livingston County)   John does not know about this article.  Yet.   Give him a call at 586-723-0069 to schedule your own home inspection, or just call to let him know that you saw him on a roof recently..

Kris,

But the view is so much better from the roof top...

I'm not crazy about heights, so years ago I started a successful antenna and satelitte instalation company.  LOL  It worked!

I suffer from severa acrophobia.  I know ever circuitous route in the area to avoid high bridges and ramps.

A roof?  Forget it.  I don't even change ceiling light bulbs.

Lenn,  I go out of my way to avoid driving on bridges also.  Hubby has to drive over the Mackinaw Bridge (I won't even look out the window).  Son #1 had to drive over the bridge that leads into Chicago from I-94 when we took a road trip. Even freeway bridges scare the dickens out of me.  Fully understand and empathize.

Cute -- I'm not fond of heights either.  But I would be even more uneasy crawling around under a house with all the creepy crawly critters down there ! ~ Evelyn

I have a fear of open, high places. I can go to the top of the Sears Tower with no problem. But put me on a second floor balcony without a railing? Forget it.

I am with you about heights.  No way for me.  I too have a great inspector that gets right up there and checks everything out.  I will tell you it is dangerous, my dad was up on the latter looking at something on his roof - not even on the roof - and fell on the driveway and he spent about 3 days in the hospital, broken bones everywhere.  9 pins in his arm, concussion.  It is to be taken lightly for sure.

Kris--It is important to ask if the home inspector is going to go on the roof...It is the only way to really inspect...Those binoculars don't always do the job. BTW--I had two 2-story windows replaced this year and had to leave the house as I could not watch. Similar situation when we had our oak trees trimmed and I had people hanging from branches with chainsaws. Brave people doing these jobs!

At least you did not climb on the roof to take the photos....did you?

your friend in Charlottesville!

Evelyn:   Believe it or not I could go into a crawl space.  Wouldn't want to..but I could do it :-)

Richard:   Wow, that's kind of cool that you can go in to high places like the Sears Tower even with your fear of heights.   Wish I was more like you...

Audrey:   Sorry to hear about your Dad.  What an awful fall!

Teri:   You sound much like me :-)  I can't watch tree trimmers either!

Charles:   Zoom lens :-)  Nope, not me.  I was panicky just watching him.

Yes, I'm not big on the height thing either.  Even looking up bothers me.  I'm glad that's somebody else's job.

I thought you were going to say you climbed the ladder and show us photos from the top.  I am so scared of heights.  We went to see the latest Batkman movie this weekend and the "heights" scared me.

I agree these folks earn their keep, but I do think climbing around on roofs would be fun. It's some of the other places these folks have to go that would freak me out.

Kris, The biggest problem is getting on and off the ladder, in my opinion.  Being on the roof is no big deal just DON'T LOOK DOWN until you have to.  It is like walking a sand dune otherwise - or so I tell myself.... I've been on a few roofs in my time.  :)

Kris, getting on roofs is not my favorite part of the job, but then, neither is getting into some crawl spaces. But then you are right, all in a day's work...

Andy:   It took my quite a few years before I could be outside during that part of a home inspection, let along photographing it.  Looking up and all that... :-)

Maureen:   Goodness, I'm the say way!  Even movies showing heights get me all squirmy.

Greg:   I envy you brave people who would willingly go up and enjoy it!

Susan:   Oh my girl...you're incredible!

Michael:   I'd rather follow you into a crawl space.  No way would I get on the roof!
