There is a new formula to stain concrete. This is a 0-VOC, LEEDs credited approved product which contains an acid. The acid reacts with the minerals in the concrete.

The finished product can look like just about any stone finish for much less of a financial investment.

Be sure to check out KEMIKO Stone Tone Stain.

Architectural Specs are available on the website.

Kemiko Stone Tone Stain is available as a DIY product or they will direct you to a professional applicator.

UPDATE:

I've heard back from a sales rep and yes, Kemiko stone tone stain is safe to use over radiant concrete flooring!

Hi Dane,

what is a DIY product? Do you have to have a license or some sort of certificate to be able to buy this stuff?

Hey Greg!

DIY = Do It Yourself no licence or training required to purchase or use. I'd suggest all men READ THE APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS however! ;)

Dane, timely post.  I just started a new project this morning and we are staining the concrete floor in the lower level.  I have seen it done several times and love it.  It is a cost effective choice too.

I have always wanted to try this but do not have any concrete at my house.  Do you know if they make low VOC spray paint?

Good question Sandra!

I would imagine it would be quite difficult to do that...but someone must. You can always buy a low voc paint and put it in a sprayer.

I love stained concrete floors.. thinking I'm going use them in my next home.  It is great that they are now more environmentally friendly, this was actually one of my concerns when I saw the process... thanks for the info!

I've emailed the company to ask if it's safe to put over floors that have radiant heat. I'll let you all know what the response is.

Wow what a great product! Let us know if you ever use it and if it turns out as great as those photos! I think I might try it out on my parent's concrete paths around the yard. Have to see if it's available around here!

Thanks for sharing!

Aloha Dane,

Thanks for sharing this awesome product. I love burnished concrete and this gives alot more color options to our clients.

Hi Dane,

I'd like to try this on my really ugly driveway. You always seem to be up on the latest things. Thanks for sharing.

I have always liked the look of stained concrete - just a word of caution - don't use a dark color outside - it can be a real pain to keep clean. My husband wanted a dark reddish brown leather look on our back patio and it looked fantastic when it was first done but two dogs and three thousand tiny paw prints later it looked awful:) What with the dust and dirt (and the paw prints) I was forever cleaning it and it never really looked the same again - stick with the lighter colors outside:)

Dane,

This is good news- a client I am working with building their first home is keeping (for now) the concrete flooring in their basement. I suggested they stain/glaze it.

This news from you is perfect timing, as we at Hello Home are all about going green (or as close as we can to it).

Thanks for sharing!

Hi Dane,

Anyone Interseted in Acid Stain might want to check out my blog called Trippin' on Acid Stained Floors. It has some technical info and pricing. It also details the process step by step!

It is awesome totally DIY, and very cost-effective!
