Every fall Coloradans get to enjoy a different kind of gold rush, the turning of the aspen leaves. Do yourself a favor

if you are anywhere near Colorado, hop into the car and get yourself to where the aspens grow. I can assure you it will not only be worth the trip, but will lift your spirits and tickle your senses.

We found the best route to take for optimum viewing of the aspens was Highway 285 through Conifer, to Buena Vista, then onto Twin Lakes and over Independence Pass to Aspen.

Driving this way the road is shrouded with brilliantly colored aspens. Mountain vistas of slightly snow capped peaks and the ever-changing sky are delightful to the eye.

We left at the last minute on Saturday and managed to get into Aspen just after dark. Had we planned better, it would have been nice to cross Independence Pass in the daylight. Instead I had the shear delight of photographing an old red barn with farm equipment at the day's last light. It was shear serendipity.

As I readied to hop in the car I glanced to the west just in time to see the brilliantly violet, red sun setting over the golden aspens. A perfect ending to a perfect day.

Our luck stayed with us as we pulling into the charming town of Aspen and found the very last room at the Innsbruck Hotel. It was a new room with hot tub in the front of the hotel and a steam shower in our private bath. After a soak and a steam we were reduced to Gumby that night! Aspen is the place to go for pampering.

The next morning we were up and out to catch first light at the intended destination, Maroon Bells. It was a perfect morning as the sun came up over the peaks of North America's most photographed mountain. I got a nice photo, but you can tell I was half asleep when I took it. After all the postering for a position with the many photographers on the shoreline, I still managed not to see the group of photographers off to the right in my frame. DUH!

Just the same, one can tell why this is a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers alike!

If you go, don't forget to bring $10 per car to enter the park. It's a small price to pay to preserve this beauty.

Later that morning while it was still early for the rest of the world, we enjoyed a fabulous breakfast at the Main Street Bakery in Aspen. The restaurant offered a wonderful breakfast and we could see why the customers didn't mind waiting for their turn as we left. Getting up early has it's benefits.

We left Aspen traveling back over Independence Pass with a quick stop at the ghost town of Independence I will forever marvel at the bravery and fortitude of our ancestors who came here in search of gold. They blazed a path for us to follow, how they did it will always amaze me. The high country of Independence is magnificent and brutal.

Our entire trip took just over 24 hours. Living in Colorado has it's advantages, in a moments notice we can pack our bags in search of adventure, yet still be home ready to go back to work on Monday.

Life is good!

Kristal, what a gorgeous tour. I can't believe your leaves are so golden already. We are barely having out tips turn, yet. I love fall too, it is like a new year with all the students coming back.

I happened to be on a business trip in late September many years ago. We took some time to drive from Denver up to Evergreen. The aspens had turned and we marveled at all the gold mixed in with the dark evergreens. It looked like the mountains were on fire. Simply gorgeous!

KK, Stunning photos, as always. You captured your 24 hour trip with great beauty. We enjoy looking, through your lens, at your photos.

Our leaves are just barely starting to turn. You have inspired me to keep my camera handy for our fall colors.

KK - your photos are magnificent, as they always are. How can one not be moved by the visual beauty you have brought to the screen. Waht a nice reminder that we all need to sometimes stop and spend time enjoying what we have around us. I always loved fall but hated winter, and now I can enjoy them in different ways in CA. And I have my own fall post coming.

It was such fun to see you again in Las Vegas and chat a bit.

Kristal, Thanks for sharing Colorado with us. I live in California, but have spent quite a bit of time in Colorado including 18 months in Aspen and I've spent many a day at Maroon Bells. I defy anyone to tell me that it is not one of the most spectacular places on this planet. Someday, I plan on retiring in Colorado. It is truly beautiful!

Wow - amazing pictures.  I was not familiar with the beauty of Aspen trees until I saw them on Oprah with the T. Cruise interview... so beautiful.  It sounds like a fantastic trip.  I hope I get to experience it sometime putting it on the list!

Kristal, what beautiful pictures and a wonderful time.  Last time I was in Colorado was about 8 years ago when my sister still lived there after graduation from UC Boulder.  There's beauty around every corner in the mountains.

Kristal: Fall is one of my favorite times of year in Colorado. About 5 years ago my husband and I had the luxury of being in Denver for the turning of the Aspens. It was just utterly break taking.

Kristal, with your spectacular ability to write and showcase your photos, you certainly deserve the accolades.

I grew up on 7th Ave Parkway, went to St. Mary's Academy and then on to Colo. Woman's College which changed it's name while I was there to Temple Buell and now is part of DU Extension. I lived in Denver from 3rd grade until I was 23 or 24 years old and moved to Walnut Creek, CA.  My folks have property up past Georgetown and we use to go there every weekend.

Back when I was a kid, it was safe to stand on Interstate 70, with your skis and hitch ride on up to the basin from the cabin...don't think they do that now days.

I'm always thrilled to read about Denver and all the new subdivisions that have sprouted up where I use to have hay back riding parties.

Aren't you sorry you asked?  I think I wrote a diary.

Kristal,

It's just a tad too soon for us.  The leaves are just starting to turn, but I think its going to be quite a show this year.  Last year was very muted. Looking forward to it.

Gena ~ Oh my, you certainly have deep roots in Denver!  I had no idea!  I love the vision of you standing on I-70 hitching a ride to the hills!  Do that today and you would surely be run over...  Lot's of the snowboarders hitch rides up the mountains, but they are already there, they just ride down the mountain and hitch a ride back to the top.

Ruthmarie ~  You must remember we are at a higher altitude so we start earlier than most.  It is a show that's for sure!

Michael ~ Aspen is a wonderful place, I seldom get there in the winter.  It's so far away for us locals.

Kathy ~ I would have loved to go with you on your barn hunting trip.  What a great idea!

Kristal, when I hitched I was already in the mtns. just about 5 miles away from Loveland Basin. In fact, when I was in grade school, if you had a 3.0 average you could skip school on Fridays and go skiing. It was quite the incentive and each year I made sure I was able to go. Then, on Friday night the bus would drop us off back at school where my parents had the car packed to go back up to the hills to the cabin so it was a ski weekend. I use to love to ski!

I agree though, now I would never hitch hike from the cabin but in those days, early in the morning locals were the ones on I-70 and it was safer.

The photos are beautiful, Kristal.  Here in the Gulf Coast we do not have much of a change in seasons at all.  Which means that I do not have to stage houses in the snow, but the heat can sure be a killer!
