We are removing ALL <script> HTML codes from the ActiveRain Real Estate Network.  Now that should have gotten your attention and maybe even ruffled some feathers.  Really though, we are removing script HTML coding from Blog Posts and the Blog Sidebars.  This may also remove some of the other issues we have been having on the network by doing so.  Having said that, here's where we REALLY need your help, yes YOU!

What widgets, gadgets, applications, chicklets, and gizmo's are you currently using on your Blog that you absolutely cannot live without?  Do you use MyBlogLog?  This is a script widget.  What about REtaggr, this too is a script widget.  Google Analytics?  Yep!  You can go to your "My Home" link, click on "My Settings" and see what <scripts> and HTML codes you have added to your Blog Description Box.  I need to get a list of YOUR <SCRIPT> widgets.

You will know it's a script code by the <script> in the HTML.  It will most likely look something like this:

This is really more for the security and protection of our Network.  A malicious hacker could go in and write a script that could be harmful or fatal to the network.  I know we don't have any of those types of members here now, but as we continue to grow, we need to protect the network and the Blogs of all our contributing members.

If you can let me know which ones you feel are a must, and that you would give up your right arm for, I will compile a list from this post and see which ones I can get blessed and approved.  If you need help trying to find where you have these scripts in your Blogs or Posts, please let me know asap, and I will try and help you.  They want to remove these asap.

Once we compile a list of trusted widgets and script codes, I'll get them added to a white-list, then provide a post showing which ones we'll be allowing on the network.  I'd like to start with MyBlogLog, RETaggr and Google-Analytics, are there others you'd like to add to this list?  Please take a moment to Help Me, Help YOU, get this Pre<Script>tion Filled.  Thanks.

Just FYI: - This will NOT affect <object> codes, video <embed> codes, and <a=href> codes.  Just <scripts>.
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE ANYTHING RIGHT NOW!  We'll keep you posted on the next steps. :-))

After reading Gena's post, I just realized sitemeter.com is another script code, and I would like to add it to the approved list if possible.

OK there go my "toys." Guess it's worth the effort if this place moves faster!  The bad boys are still trying to screw up the internet via java, let's just send a back-spike of juice to their nasty machines to render them useless.

I love My Blog Log, Site Meter and a widget that shows what I've posted elsewhere from widgetbox. I would really like to have them all on the "safe" list.

I could part with Meez if that would help.

While we are on this subject.

I would like the power to have google analytics on my blog here and my outside blog as well as the ability to verify a meta tag for google webmaster tools. Also is it possible to change the meta description for an outside blog and add tags to it?

Those few widgets like blog log are good. and a way to track us around. thats about it.

I love Babelfish, but I can't say it's brought me any business. I would give it all up for more stability and less proxy errors.

I'd also love to see the backgrounds go the way of the do-do bird. The load times for some blogs is w-a-y too long, especially on a Pocket PC device.

I was getting ready to add "Amber Alert" to my Blog site after seeing it on another AR members blog.
CodeAmber.org is the site, and they use "Scripts" for their links.

Maybe AR could add the Amber Alert to all pages...I think this would be awesome, then we won't have to add the script, and everyone will be able to see when there is an Amber Alert.  This is a huge network and since lots of Realtors drive, this could be awesome for the Amber Alert System.

I am taking notes and reading all of your comments here, I'll be submitting EVERY one of the <script> widgets and codes mentioned, thanks for helping us put this all together.  If there is NOT a <script> in the HTML code, then you don't have to worry about that specific item.  Stat Counter is a <script> code, but Clustermaps is not.  Keep them coming, I don't want to miss Anyone's request.  This worked out much better than just removing them don't ya think?  :-))

You can ALL remove the ActiveRainCustomizer script

that is currently in your Blog Description box.  It is no longer needed and will not have any affect on your Blog by removing it now.  You can see how powerful a script is when it can change the entire look of ones Blog with just a short little code.  Thank goodness, this was a script we endorsed.  Please remove it now.  :-))

Other than the RES, however, I'm okay with cleaning up and simplifying everything if you must.

1.  Please check your own widgets to see if they are in fact <script> or not.
Here's how, and it is also posted above in this post:

a. Go To "My Home"

b. then click "My Settings"

c. then look in the "Blog Description Box"  (pictured above) and scroll through to see what widgets have the <script> in the HTML code.  Then we won't have to go through all the other widgets and gizmos that won't be affected.

2. PLEASE REMOVE THE AR CUSTOMIZER SCRIPT IF IT'S THERE,  IT NO LONGER WORKS.

Thanks you guys.  :-)

Brad I just thought of something, with the ever changing of technology and widgets all the time, I think it would be wise if there was a page dedicated to approved Scripts/Widgets/Sidebar Progs and should be an option to submit a request to approve a script for use for future references.  This way in case something ever does pop up where we NEED this widget or would LIKE to have it, we have an option to :)  Just a thought.

Hello Brad thanks for the info. Ive removed my custom blog script. Thanks for the tip and its Blog Customizer replacement on AR. I have been using use Retagrr- which saves so much space on a blog by listing services that you use (ive read your post on that topic as well thanks), mybloglog and widget box- check it out if you dont have it. It actually lists your posts in a widget box so viewers can click on any particular post in the window. thanks for the info and your posts! Will you and AR allow Retagrr, mybloglog and widget box for agents to use on our blogs please! Oh and listing tags as a drop down really cleaned up the look of blogs a great deal. Thank you in AR for whoever made that move! oh by the way, I like your music images in your Journey post!

THAnK YOU THANK YOU!

The only script I run that I care about is the widget that shows a list of my recent posts on the sidebar - if AR would do that automatically like wordpress does, I would ditch that baby like a hot potato.

I would love to see all these resource hogging scripts GONE!! GONE!!! GONE!!! and have only the ones most relevant to our customers here.  (but that is of course my opinion.)

I also blog on wordpress.com and never ever receive proxy errors with the frequency I do here on AR - only once in a blue moon.

STOP!!! Don't delete ANY of your stuff!!!

This is just a PreSCRIPTion being filled, you don't have to take the medicine yet!!!  Once we compile a list of all your script widgets and codes, the tech guys and programmers can go thru them all and determine which ones may be hazardous to our health.  You will be kept informed all along the way.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO REMOVE ANYTHING RIGHT NOW.
(you can remove the script to the AR Customizer if you like though)

Most video embed codes are NOT script, so do not worry about the codes that start with <object> or <embed>, they are fine.  Nothing will be removed until you are informed of what we are doing next.  :-)

This is probably off topic but can I ask that you do away with that annoying thing that comes up when I try to CTRL + V to copy/paste from my keyboard?  I use a laptop and it's annoying to use the right click "mouse" key, and I have grown so used to using CTRL +V on the keyboard.  It really annoys me to have to do that extra step and sometimes there is formatting that is lost.

Now our techs can click on your names in the comments and go to your Blog sites to check out your widgets.  This will be so much easier than us trying to hunt them out and possibly missing some.

THANK YOU for helping us make this easy on us all.

This is a good thing no matter what.  We are doing all this for the benefit of every member and for the security of our network.

This is just the PRE stage, fact finding and information gathering so  we appreciate your voice, opinions and input.

Thank you again for all your support and help.  :-)

Brad-

I can not live without mybloglog because that is how I do my webstats on my AR Blog, like seeing what searches are bringing people to my blog.

I need to add Feedburner so that consumers can subscribe to my AR Blog. I am learning how to do that now.

I can NOT live without my CLUSTER MAPS that you taught me how to use! THAT IS MY BEST LISTING TOOL!

ANd of course our sellers would go ballistic if we got rid of our VFLYER scrolling listings widget. Again, that gets a lot of click throughs and consumers love clicking on it.

What about my Join Active Rain button on my side bar? I have been getting some new agents joining on my blog.

What about my Subscribe to my blog button on my posts and what about all our posts written in HTML code from Nvu?

Shane - google analytics works fine on my AR Blog, we haven't made that available for outside Blogs yet.  One step at a time.  Some members have difficulty getting it to work, I have it on my Blog and it seems to work fine. I know others have it working as well.  We are most definitely looking to try and keep many of these useful script widgets for our members, but it will be limited to those that work and are safe to our network.  Wordpress has been very successful with this same approach.

Hey Brad,

I like MyBloglog for statistical data, but if you need to strip all the widgets, please do so. I'd rather have reliability and availability than functionality. If AR isn't available, what's the point of the functionality?

Craig - we are looking for the ones to allow and keep, MyBlogLog is certainly one for us to try and keep on AR. We WILL NOT be stripping all widgets.  We will be only allowing <script> widgets that have been checked, tested, and approved by our team as safe, and non-malicious to our network.  No jeopardizing script codes.

I so agree, if AR isn't available, what's the point of functionality??  Yes!  :-)

Sorry - I'm not sure - do you want us to remove all the 'script' ones now.........and then if they're approved re-add them? I'm not attached to anything I have other then the statcounter..........thanks!:-)

Liz - NO!  Just list them here in the comments, then wait for the next post announcement.  We'll list which ones we have approved.  There are many different issues that we have to look at and address.

To save us (our tech guys and me) from having to go to your Blog to see which one's you have, it would be quicker if you could just tell us.  We'll do the rest, and keep you in the loop all along the way.  Thanks.  :-)

Your welcome Brad. It looks like the majority of rainers are using things that are code and embed. Looks like a lot of the "feed readers' are script though. I haven't seen any new ones out and about that aren't already listed here, but you never know. Hope that helps you a little. :)

We would like to add  Feedburner ......we do not currently have it on this blog -- but had planned to add it----

Happy you are going in this direction - as some of the posts are so "heavy" with widgets and stuff it takes a very long time for the pages to load -- there are some pages that have something going on with them that they never load at all... have not figured out what is on those that is causing the issue.... it's like you go to a post and it hangs up and hangs up and hangs - and you then go on ..

Brad - I put in a ticket yesterday to fix the double header on my customized blog - all fixed, looks great again, thanks so much to who fixed it.  However:

All my side bar stuff also disappeared, widgets, blidgets, trulia, whoolia, wiki, picky, snicky - I don't remember what they were, so don't worry about it.  I can't tell one from another in the description box anyway and I don't know how I put them there.

So, somebody cleaned up my sidebar for me - nothing there at all - OK with me.  I did like one thingie, but can't remember what it is called.

But what also happened.....

I wrote 3 posts on 10-2.  One disappeared.  Poof!  The other two have a yellow feature star next to them - that has to be a mistake.  I got some emails of congratulations for the 2 features.  But 2 features in one day for me would be a miracle from the real God.

The 2 'featured' posts (my last 2) have a yellow star in the regular place, but do not say featured on my points summary page, and they each have only 225 points although they have about 50 comments each.

Does this have anything to do with the issue that you are having, or should I copy and paste this whole comment into a new ticket?  Or call Jorgen and wake him up?

Brad - Wow - I really did get 2 stars?  How cool is that!!!  Well, twice as cool as one!

I couldn't believe that I got a featured post, let alone 2 -I figured that it had to be a mistake!

OMG - I already copied and pasted my above comment and sent it to Bob in a ticket - which probably made no sense to him at all!

My sidebar is fine - I will juice it up later with the new guidelines -

Thank you so much for the features - that means a lot to me.

I got some great answers, although I was gone all day, pulled a ghost and post, now I have to go finish responding.

I will send an email to Bob to ignore the last ticket and promise not to waste his time anymore!

BTW - I have 2 in escrow from direct calls on my blog!  AR Rocks!  Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus - disguised as a social network.

Candace - yes, we do have our fun don't we, but know this, ActiveBrad will NEVER pipe down! haha.

In all seriousness though, this call for saving scripted widgets has no bearing whatsoever on Localism.  There are no widgets there, but for the posts that do have scripts in them, they will be affected by these future changes if removed.  This is why we are trying to find out which ones members are using so we can be the heroes and not dog dung! hehe.

I think that when we get the final list put together, it will be up to the Tech Lords to determine which ones make it to the "V.I.W" board... (Very Important Widgets)

If you need some help with Localism formatting and alignment, you know you can call me anytime and I'll do my very best to help you get those corrected and formatted properly.  707 718-6773.  NOW GO TO BED!!  :-))

Brad, does this mean we will not be able to embed code for (Jeff Turner's) Real Estate Shows and fliers in our posts? V-Flyerr? Postlets? I, too would lik to be able to use Google Analytics on AR and my outside blog. And I'd like to use Top Producer's Market Snapshot Widget on my sidebar, but I never figured out how to do that in the first place. lol. Other than the RES, however, I'm okay with cleaning up and simplifying everything if you must.

Margaret - I don't think vflyer, postlets or RE shows are script widgets, but I'll have to come over to your Blog settings and check.  As far as I know, they are not.  Neither is slide.com.  I'll also look at Top Producers Market snapshot, do you know any members who are using it on their AR Blogs? Let me know, thanks. :-)

2:36am • #132

Margaret - I just checked out one of your posts with a Real Estate Show in it and you are good to go.  They are not script.  The code starts with <embed> and NOT <script> so no worries on those.  :-)

2:40am • #133

The code is all a learning curve to us. We have added some widgets to our blog... I do like the 2 items that we have, one is a widgett showing our recent blog entries, one is Philadlephia news, and I do like the mybloglog where it shows people's photos. I have been struggling with the top header/banner. Are one of the A/R gods available for hire to dress up our blog header and widgets and all ?

Christopher and Stephanie - I know this can be really confusing stuff for some of our members, I'll try my best to ease the pain. :-))  I'll check out your other widgets, we already know that MyBlogLog is a script widget, and widgetbox too, but there are so many using it, as long as it doesn't cause the network problems, I don't see why we won't be able to keep them.  Of course I'm not a programmer or techy either.  I'll be right back after I check out your Blog...

...Ok I'm back. Most of your widgets are scripts, but let's have the Tech Team check it out to see which ones are already mentioned here and which ones are not.  They will have the final say, don't worry at this point, don't remove them, we're are just fact finding and gathering information right now. Thanks. :-)

PS - Yes, I am a hired gun for side jobs if you really need me. :-))

Crystal - I don't think Facebook has a script widget, if you have one on your Blog, please come back and let me know, you weren't signed in when you commented so there is no link to your blog.  As far as I know, it's just an <a=href> image.  Thanks. :-)

3:04am • #135

Jeannette - vFlyer and Postlest should be fine.  Check Postlets to confirm, just check out the code and see if it starts with the HTML code <script> or <embed>, then we'll know for sure.  :-)

3:06am • #136

Brad Thanks for the heads up. Some of this is beyond me, but I am hoping that your post will get enough notice to make your efforts worth while. I periodically see posts from AR when I browse. Does AR have the capability to email everyone or to post to everyone to get news like this out? Best Regards Wayne

Wayne - we do a newsletter everyday and that's about it.  This post will probably be included in Mondays edition, but just like these types of posts, not everyone reads them.  We do our best. Have a great weekend.  :-)

3:10am • #137

Brad - How 'bout - Technorati??

Christine - you are ok with Technorati, it is an embed code.  :-)

3:15am • #139

This is probably off topic but can I ask that you do away with that annoying thing that comes up when I try to CTRL + V to copy/paste from my keyboard? I use a laptop and it's annoying to use the right click "mouse" key, and I have grown so used to using CTRL +V on the keyboard. It really annoys me to have to do that extra step and sometimes there is formatting that is lost. I hate it! I hate it! Does that applicaiton eat up resources? If so, that can be the first thing to go that I'm sure NOBODY will miss!

Karen - I do know what you mean, that pop up is a pain in the butt, but it also protects you at the same time. There is a work around if you'd like to know about it.  I can't give up all my secrets here, you'll have to contact me in private for that one. Thanks.  :-)

Do you mean that, when we do a blog, we can no longer change the font to a different size and color.

Steven - No, this does not mean that at all.  This only affects some of the widgets and things you see in people's posts or Blogs that require a certain type of HTML code.  Video uses what's called an embed or object code.  Others use scripts to run within your Blog posts, (many mentioned above in the comments), this has nothing to do with fonts, colors, and basic HTML used for linking, coloring, sizing etc.

Some <script> codes are used for tracking and you don't even see them, like google analytics and sitemeter etc.,

Huiting - Being a developer gives you an unfair advantage of understanding the risks, but I appreciate that you do, thanks.

It will be nice when we have a predefined list for members, I'd love to see a button that allowed them to add from the predefined list with a single click.  They'd just select the widget or tracker they want and click ok.

That would be cool.

Allison - what widget is that you're referring to?  Banners are just images and will NOT be affected by this.  This is only for items that require you to copy and paste a code into your Blog sidebar or your Blog post that has a script in it.  As you can see by some of the comments, there are some that do, and many that don't.

I'll add your weather widget to the list for sure, seems harmless enough, but one never knows, that's a techs call.  I am guilty of having too much crap on mine.  Even with the best intentions to provide some kind of value with them for readers and visitors, I have had folks tell me my Blog is slow to load and even locks up at times.  I have tried spring cleaning my sidebar so many times, it's sad that I can't just wipe them all off of there.  Guess I need to join one of those programs eh? Snapshots, feedburner, vflyer's, get clicky, site meter, retagger, mybloglog, widget syndication, widget blog catalog, widgetbox, who's among us,blog catalogblograma. I finally got feedburner correct today. Thanks, I think linkedin is not script.

Missy - some of the one's you list are NOT script widgets and some are.  Blog Catalog, vFlyer, Among Us, Blog Catalograma, and LinkedIn are NOT script widgets as far as I can tell, the others are and will be submitted on the list to the programmers.  Thanks.  :-)

BTW - I'm glad you got the feedburner working again, I just couldn't correct it without your codes from feedburner.  I know that is an important one for those members who want readers to be able to subscribe to Blogs via email.  Feedburner is NOT a script widget just FYI.  :-)

Well...... to be honest, I don't NEED any of my gadgets, widgets, etc. I like the pendulum clock, but I'll remove it for ya!

Nancy - no need to remove it, that's not a script widget.  Go ahead and put it back up if you like.  One thing to consider about any of these widgets and stuff is, what value does it bring to you or your readers?  Is it for show or for go!  We may like some of these things, but do our readers really care?  That would be the 64,000 dollar question on many of these gadgets and gizmos.  :-)

I like my Meebo applet.... i actually get an occasional drop-in from prospects But I can replace it with something safer if needed...

Tom - your MEEBO is safe, it is an <embed> code widget and not a threat or malicious type of widget. :-)

Michelle - No crying, your slide.com is NOT a script code, you can whine a little though if you want because your grazr.com IS.  I will add grazr.com to the list.  :-)

Brad,

I'm going to have to re-read this to make sure I'm getting it... I sounds like you have a big issue.  If I'm understanding, you want a list of our script widgets... Here are the two on my blog bar, one is an iframe, you didn't mention that style, but I wanted to bring it to your attention.  And, you want to remove all script from blog posts too?... Is your attempt to clean up the side bars first to see if you even need to scrub our blogs?  While you guys are hard at work, will any of this fix the PHOTO, TEXT and TAG CLOUD issue on our outside blogs?  THANKS for trying to make the network better, I know that is the whole mission here.

Anyway - you wanted a list of our widgets... Here's my 2... Good thing I didn't have too much fun on my blog :(

I love Babelfish, but I can't say it's brought me any business. I would give it all up for more stability and less proxy errors.

Vickie - Bablefish, your translator is a script code widget, maybe we can find ONE translator that works for everyone like google's or another that is universal and could benefit all members.  There are so many translators out there, I'll leave that one up to the programmers.  Thanks.  :-)

10:54am • #175

Kevin - we will add BlogRush to the list, I have seen many members using that one. Thanks. :-)

10:58am • #176

I was getting ready to add "Amber Alert" to my Blog site after seeing it on another AR members blog. CodeAmber.org is the site, and they use "Scripts" for their links. Maybe AR could add the Amber Alert to all pages...I think this would be awesome, then we won't have to add the script, and everyone will be able to see when there is an Amber Alert. This is a huge network and since lots of Realtors drive, this could be awesome for the Amber Alert System.

Gregory - you are safe, I just checked your Blog and you have NO script widgets.  ImageChef images are not script, but you might want to check into the Amber Alert site and see if their code has script in it or not. Thanks. :-)

Kent - you have two script widgets, Weatherlet and among.us.  I also noticed that you have some funky code in your Blog that is pushing 4 or your widgets and your tag word box to the Bottom of your blog.  You might want to check that out.  It will also help you to understand why we are doing this, you may have some code in tere that is corrupting yourr Blog.  ClusterMaps is ok, it's not a script code.  I Never did find your zimbio widget.

Hey Brad what the heck does the "Widget Master" need our help for - LOL I am sure you don't need my 2 cents as I am sure most of it was covered. I didn't check is share this a script widget. Email working or not add this one to the list:) Bill Gassett

IMPORTANT COMMENT TO ALL MEMBERS:

Bill - I understand about the sharethis widget and I personally love it and use it on other sites, but quite frankly and honestly, this is the very reason we have to start monitoring these script widgets.  Don't get me wrong here, but any time a member installs a widget like this that "Disables" their AR email, this is not a good thing.

It took me two weeks with our programmers and tech support to figure out that it was the Sharethis widget causing this.  2 WEEKS!!  Matt Heaton finally figured it out.  I got numerous emails from members saying my email no longer worked and they had to go to my profile to be able to contact me.  Consumers may not go to those lengths to contact you. They click on the email link and if it doesn't work, they're gone!

I worked with sharethis tech dept and crew trying to get it resolved, and they couldn't, or we couldn't make it work, so the widget had to be removed to save my email functionality.  Seemed like a harmless widget, seemed very useful and helpful in my eyes and to viewers, but behind the scenes, it was corrupting my email shutting it down completely.

This is exactly why we need to review ALL THESE WIDGETS with <script> codes to protect our members and our network. Who knows what other widgets are out there or coming that could cause even greater chaos than this one did.  We have to do this, and everyone will benefit from it in the long run.  I'll let the programmers decide if ShareThis is one they'll allow to remain, but I do have my doubts on this one.

Thanks for reminding me to Sharethis story so others will understand the importance of what we are doing, and why we are doing it.  You Rock!!  :-)

I removed the Customizer script.  I have stat counter, but if you have to remove it, I can live without it.  I've used Postlets, in the past, and would like to do so again. I don't think it is a script, so there shouldn't be a problem.  Same for VFlyer.

I applaud your efforts.  I think a lot of widgets, on the sidebar, are distracting.

Brad, tried to put up the "script" for website grader badge tool this morning in the HTML portion but it didn't take and left the html code showing on the article. Apparently, AR has already started to block this particular script.

Gena - I have seen others using the website grader function on their site, but not sure I've seen it incorporated into ours.  AR has not already started anything yet, in fact, I was instructed to leave this post up all weekend to gather as much info from members as we could.

Those guys are gone on the weekends so no worries.

I have also found from plenty of experience, that some codes just don't work on our network.

There have been many occasions where I tried to add a widget and all it showed was the code.

Another thing might be if you don't grab every last letter and symbol of the code when cutting and pasting, it won't work either.  I have seen this be the case more often than not.

Try it again, and if it works, and you think you need it, then come back and comment and add it to the list.  Websitegrader.  Thanks Gena, have a great SAC weekend. :-)

Michael - yes, I will make sure that this information gets published and taking it one step further, there may be plans to change how these widgets get incorporated into our Blogs and posts.  There was some talk about setting these up like how wordpress does it, maybe an icon that will let you choose from a select list of approved AR widgets.  Don't hold me to that, but I think it's a great idea.  :-)

11:09am • #261

Mara - your clock is safe, and so is your twitter update widget.  The widgetbox <script> is already added to the list, and I'll have to check out the Facebook banner, I don't make the final call here, it's really up to the programmers and tech guys behind the scenes.  :-)

11:16am • #262

Jeff - glad you appreciate this approach, I agree, to do it any other way just doesn't work.  The time frame is to hurry, but no set date that I'm aware of.  I think once they look at these, it will take a while to sort out which ones will be allowed and then how  we want to implement the access to the approved list.  I'll be doing a follow-up post on this for sure. Thanks. :-)

11:20am • #263

Sharon - here here!!  :-)  Thanks for supporting our efforts here, see ya in just a few weeks!  :-)

11:22am • #264

Donna Paul, you don't need to email me the list, I need you to post the names of the script widgets here on this post so our techno-experts can review them from one location, hence the purpose of this post. Thanks for taking the time to do that for us, I appreciate all your support on this.

11:24am • #265

Lisa - I saw your comment, and the one you removed and they were all duly noted.  The ones you have added are on the list are included, and I will make sure that the "powers" know how important these are to many of us members using them. I'm here to represent, and will do my best to see that every script widget that is used by the majority here is carefully evaluated and hopefully allowed to stay.

Thanks for helping me put this together for the programmers.  Everyone here has been a HUGE help.

11:30am • #266

Joan - with all the requests for statcounter, I just don't see how that one will get "Not Approved!"  :-)

11:31am • #267

The day the world stood still. This shouldn't be a large issue. Many widget tags actually have uneccessary tags which can easily be removed without worry of the widget not working. Ill give you a nice list before weeks end brad.

Victor - thanks.  I'll need those by the end of the day if possible.  Please post ONLY the widget name here, and not the codes or sites here.  Also, if the widget was already mentioned above, no need to add it here.

You made a great point about some of these widgets that will still work when the code is removed, the tech guys will be able to determine which widgets those are.  That should allow us to keep some of the ones where this is applicable.  Thanks for pointing that out my friend. :-)

Aloha Brad: What about music onmy blog? (1) How do I do it ? (2) Will removing scripts prevent it? Thanks Jim
11:36am • #269

Hi Brad! Mine is javascript (just as you wrote). Sounds like a lot of work on your part to do it with our needs in mind. As usual, you guys are awesome! Thanks!

Paula - this has been a lot of worked, it has actually consumed my weekend, but it's totally worth it knowing that our community is in support of our efforts in doing it this way. Thank you for recognizing what effort and man hours go into a process like this.  You're the best!  :-)

11:38am • #270

Jim - there are some sites that allow non-scripted widgets for music, once we get through this process, I'd be happy to walk you through installing some IZ music or Hawaiian Aloha stuff on your Blog.  You want to be careful when adding music though, there are a few key things we should go over before you do.

Maybe I'll fly out there and we can do it in person, (just like old times)  :-)  I know you have that Big Screen in the Foyer, maybe we can do an AR BootCamp in your office.  (hint hint)  Aloha Nui Loa my friend.

My bloglog and the little translater (which I am removing now since it doesn't even work!!) seem to be the only html codes w/ script. I take that back, the scrolling dooly-bob has script. It's gone but html is left, should I take out html?

I think this is a common sense way of keeping us safe. Thanks Brad as always

12:29pm • #273

Renee - don't take out anything yet.  Let us review all these widgets and your Blog first, then we'll decide the next step in this process.  Please do NOT remove any HTML, as much of it will NOT be affected by this.  Thanks.

12:39pm • #274

James - I just checked out your music player and it is NOT script, you're ok.  I would recommend NOT having it start automatically though for many reasons, one of which is that the first song is POWERFUL and might scare the crap out of a first time visitor to your Blog.

There is a setting in the code that says play:autostart=TRUE, you might want to just change that to FALSE, and let your readers decide if they want to listen or not.  Just my 2 cents my No Ka Oi friend.  :-)

You guys sure don't have a lack of things to do!  Widgets just seem to slow everything down for me, so I actually haven't added any.  I'll definitely be looking out for your white list of them, though.

2:50pm • #276

OK Folks, looks like we have quite a list to work with here, thank you SOOOOO much for all your help.  I'll be talking to the team on Monday and going to bat for all your requests here, but the final decisions will be in the hands of the AR Gods and programmers.

I will be putting in a good word for many of these you have listed so don't worry, we'll come up with a good plan.  Thanks again for all your efforts here, you have no idea how much time this saved me and the staff.

YOU ARE ALL AWESOME!

Ok, so what I heard you say is I can put the Daily Proverbs widget back and if you don't like it you'll let me know.  I'm sure if that is wrong I'll find out one way or another. LOL

8:26pm • #280

Cheryl - those are not script widgets, but we'll confirm that for you.  Thanks.

8:41pm • #281

Sara - I guess my post wasn't clear enough for you, I'm Sorry.  This has nothing to do with your beautiful customized Blogs, only the widgets and scripts that are placed on the sidebar and in posts.  Anytime you copy HTML from one source and place it on AR, it's ok unless the code starts with <script>.  If it does, we need to have that <script> approved by AR.  This does NOT affect the New AR Customizer.  You can also remove the "OLD" customizer script that was provided from ActiverainCustomizer.com, this is an old script that does not work anymore.  Hope that explains it a little better.  Thanks. :-)

8:46pm • #282

Terri -  just make sure your daily proverb widget code doesn't start with <script> in it.  It's not a matter of "If I like it or not", it's a matter of how it affects the security and performance of the AR Network.  If it does NOT start with <script> then you are good to go, if it does, and it's something you feel you MUST HAVE on your Blog, then list it here before tomorrow so the guys can check it out.  Thanks.  :-)

Hi Brad-This is that long winded commenter Pat Preston. I'll spare you the long comment on this post. You have your hands full and are doing an awesome job keeping up with everybody's comments. I've read every one and some are so funny as well as yours back to them. I've haven't got around to reading my bookmarked posts yet on how to put any of the stuff on, that you might have to take off ,so I guess I'm either real lucky or real slow and that might be a good thing in this particular case anyways.  So now when the new list comes out. I'll just follow that approved list. MY problem solved.  OK, I just said this was going to be short so I'll just say to you and the rest of the commenters that this was a great way to end the day. Laughter is so good for the soul. You Brad are such an awesome person(NO SWELLED  HEAD ALLOWED FROM THIS COMPLIMENT NOW!)LOL :-)))))).

Was going to send you a private note thanking you for this post then thought "what the heck" I'll just say it here, although it has nothing to do with widgets.

Your word "prescription" had me thinking...(dangerous I know) and I realized I haven't been a good Localism neighbor.  My prescription for this week is to clean up my Localism posts, and add more that actually follow the spirit of Localism.  (Still working my way through trying to figure out how to categorize posts..but am learning)

Thanks for the word "prescription".

Ok...all my polls are missing.  I assumed it was an AR thing but I don't see the flash option on Polldaddy anymore... I never used the javascript ...  I may learn more about this stuff than I really want to, I guess I need to look and see what the html says... the javascript does say "script" in the html.

One is still there...the very last one I did about deregulating AR.  Most say "Undefined" where the poll ought to be.  Here's the code for one...

"<p><strong>Mulitple choice choose all that apply before voting.</strong></p>
<center><embed name="beta3" salign="tl" bgcolor="#ffffff" scale="autoscale" src="http://www.polldaddy.com/poll.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" allowscriptaccess="never" flashvars="p=632024" height="669" wmode="transparent" quality="high" saveembedtags="true" width="252"></embed></center>

If anyone see's about 20 polls lying around somewhere on AR let me know... I assume the same happened on my other blogs.

Kris - thanks for commenting on my Title, my little play on words, PRE meaning DON'T FREAK OUT, we're doing it right this time, SCRIPT meaning that's all we're looking for to help the network and members is <script>, and TION which represented Nobody getting Shunned in this process.  I thought it was pretty clever myself.  Much of my writing on AR has these little hidden messages and antics.  LOL~

I like how you have taken it, and made it YOUR own, however you needed to come away with a positive task.  I have had to work hard to get outside Blogs and Localism to format properly and look half-way decent, but it can be done. I'm Here to help if you ever need me.

Thanks for a great comment to start my day today, no pun intended, but it's "Just what the Doctor Ordered!"  :-))

9:27am • #288

Maureen - not sure what happened to your polls, we haven't made any changes, our offices are closed over the weekend.  I did notice the code you pasted in your comment starts with <embed> and NOT <script> so this PRE research process wouldn't affect your polls anyway.  Good luck finding them....you might want to see if Polldaddy borrowed them while updating their site this weekend.

I have a couple of nice widgets:

The widgets are for local information for central Florida and real estate definitions for terms used in the industry. Pretty harmless.....

BUT they are nice to have on my blog....

William - there is no absence of HTML, only HTML that has scripts in it. See the post I did of all the approved script widgets that are now allowed on AR.  HTML is not a problem, vflyer, postlets etc are all fine.  :-)

Hi there Brad!

I just noticed one of my posts had a yellow star,(1908 post), and I "searched" to find out what it meant (didn't see 'featured' points on my home page, so I didn't know). When I searched, I found Virginia's question above, and thought - WhooHoo!- looks like I had a featured post! If that was your doing, I thank you! If not your doing, I thank whosever it was!

Don't have to worry about losing widgets, I think the only one I have on there is Retaggr!
