Where in the US is Crossville TN, Wilmington DE, Juneau AK...

US Geography

How well do you know your way around the US?  Do you use Google Maps a lot? Has ActiveRain made you more aware of geography? ActiveRain has made me aware of having a mental block on a few geographic issues... where the state of Delaware is... The difference between Crossville TN and Clarksville TN. Always get those those two cities mixed up. I wonder at how itty bitty states like CT and NJ can be so diverse.

I have always had a hard time with the geography of the big square western US states...

Guy Lofts in Madison Wisconsin wrote: Where do you practice?  I know exactly where Madison is.  I went to school there... This week in The Columbus Dispatch in 'If U: Go There' the Columbus Dispatch describes Madison Wisconsin:

"Madison was established in 1836 on an isthmus between lakes Mendota and Monona. It serves as the state capital and its liberal bent has earned it monikers such as "The People's Republic of Madison" and "70 square miles surrounded by reality." The city with its thriving cultural scene ranks high in many national polls. Madison ranks second, according to Forbes magazine, in overall education and, Money ranked it the best place to live in 1996. In 2004, Sports Illustrated on Campus named Madison the No. 1 college sports town.

Some Central Ohioan's (Columbus Ohio area) may be traveling to Madison this weekend for the football game,  Buckeye's bound for Badgerland

Ohio Geography

Ohio with a star for ColumbusBased on Guy's ActiveRainpost asking 'Where do you practice?'  I  added a map with a star showing where Columbus is in Ohio on my ActiveRain  profile.  We often refer to our part of Ohio as Central Ohio but I know sometimes from afar the C's can be confusing Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus.  Cincinatti is southwestern Ohio.  Cleveland is northeastern Ohio... Columbus is in the middle of the state, Columbus is the capital of Ohio. Not only miles apart but the three biggest cities in Ohio are definitely different.

I am thinking now my star may really be too far northeast in Ohio.

Here's some Ohio geography trivia for you.  What is the geographic center of Ohio?  Centerburg... catchy name huh?  Centerburg is in Knox County, northeast of Columbus.

US Geography - Test yourself

I am pretty good with geography... Or I think I am.  I think but I only scored 84% on this quiz.  I was off an average of 36 miles (that does not sound as bad to me..as 84%.)

50 States Quiz

After finishing it up ... with my worst errors being Missouri, Mississippi,  Arkansas and Delaware (just on the other side of PA from OH, and my sister lives there! That whole DE, NJ, MD, Chesapeake Bay thing going on over there confuses me.) Surprise, Surprise, Surprise! I did great on those big square states out west.

Hey Maureen,

I am not up on my geography, I can't tell you where 20% of the states are but I can tell you the finer points of all the cities in my market.

Take care!

Hello Columbus! From Akron! Have a great day! I love geography!

Hi Caren I lived in Akron once.  Long ago.

When I was moving from Akron to Dayton I got on 270 to go around Columbus and took 71 and ended up in Cinci and had to call my husband in Dayton and say "oooops I shoulda taken 70 not 71 huh? Moving truck will be there looooong before me."

I learned about Ohio geography when I traveled there for several years to the American Trap Association competition in the 1980s.  It was held in Dayton in those days.

Memories.

I LOVE THIS. I had a rocky start but managed 88% with an average of 32 miles off. All school aged kids should use this.

Thanks all for the comments..

Ellie.... I think visting an area helps but MD confuses me... and I have been there.

Stan I say 'do you know so and so' about Crossville to people from Clarksville... and vice versa... but an inspector from Crossville TN (? ) made a comment about Columbus but it was Cleveland he was thinking of... the one in OH not the one in TN.

Not only Google Maps, but Wikipedia is a great source for information.

That was fun. I thought I stunk at geography, but I scored a 92% with 7 mile average. I got lucky on Missouri, Arkansas, and Iowa.

Lenn, I spent my youth at the ATA. First as a brat, then as a employee. Last summer, my son and two friends traveled to Sparta IL, new home of the ATA, for 2 weeks to work the trapshoot.

More trivia: Bellefountaine is the highest point in Ohio. I wonder what the lowest point is? ::off to google::

Maureen, That was fun. I thought I was better at geography but not according to this quiz. I only scored an 80. The first one I had to place was Utah it was hard to place on a blank map. I knew approximately where it was but I was 55 miles off. lol

Hi Maureen, I had an 84% too, but only a 21 mile average distance.  It's not that I didn't know where states went, but when you start with a blank map and the first states you have to place are ones like Iowa and Coloardo you're gonna be slightly off center! :)  That was a fun test!

I agree that it depends on which states you start with. I got a 92% with a 14 mile average. If you could pick the states and start in one corner it would be easier.

Thanks all for the comments.

Gabe I was going to go look at the number Wikipedia gives for locations (longitude and lattitude?)  for Center burg and Columbus to see how much more center they are than Columbus but decided I don't really understand that... and what if it shows that Centerburg is not dead center (I read that recently somewhere but can't document it.)

Teri I have never been to Bellefountaine... but I have heard that before... I also read about some place in western Ohio where they put their gum on a wall?? Of a drive through... Some place west of Dayton ; -)

Mitchell I can't remember what state I started with the first time... something big and square... and western US Wyoming or Montana and I amazed myself with tossing it very close to where it went.

I did try to go back in and see if it changed and it does.... the second time the first state was real easy and the second state was Wisconsin where I grew up... I am sure there is lots of luck involved in the %'s depending on how it doles them out.  I did not go on and try to get a better % or closer... just wanted to make sure it was not the exact same sequence which you could learn.

Steve... congrats on your 21 miles :- )

Richard I am impressed with your score and your average.  Teri 7 miles!!!  That's crazy...
