If you've had the pleasure of tailgating in the neighborhood surrounding Lambeau Field you'll know why this is becoming a problem.

When I have driven up to Green Bay to enjoy tailgating and a Packer game, it always amazes me the number of people partying on all the lawns of the home surrounding Lambeau Field.

Recently a home or two have been sold to out of towners that just come up to party for games.  Then things evolved to renting out houses for the weekend.  Homeowners rent out the home and it turns into a party house.  Well, you know that some parties get pretty loud and out of hand.

Neighbors then complained to the city and now Green Bay warned Owners Who Rent Homes Near Lambeau that their activities may violate city ordinances or require a special permit.

The city thinks that at least a half-dozen homes along a street adjacent to the football stadium have been turned into what the city calls party or vacation homes. Four of them are rented out on home game weekends.

The local Alderman, Chris Wery, said his office has fielded complaints from neighbors and thus the city has chosen to take action.

Many of the homeowners feel that they have done nothing wrong and have the right to rent out their properties.

I know that if the "party" home was next door to me.  I would become annoyed at loud and disruptive parties.  If I were to rent out my home, I think I'd have to be around to make certain things didn't get "out of hand."  But that's me.

15 Comments on Trouble in Green Bay for owners near Lambeau

Renting out to one of these groups would be very scary.  It would have to be a very special arrangement!

This is a challenge.  Since I live and work in Green Bay, I can see both sides of this issue.  Having a party rental next door would be annoying, especially if I had childen.  However, living next to Lambeau itself is not exactly quiet and serene.  Homeowners have some knowledge of what they are up against.  It's been this way for many years, but has seen a recent boom with the newer stadium.

There is a busy street with constant traffic, lights on 24/7, events at the nearby Resch Center, Shopko Hall, Packer Hall of Fame, and the Atrium at Lambeau Field.  The entire area is busy with daily crowds of out-of-town travelers almost year-round (which is vital for our economy) .

Property values have also become investments, with ongoing rumor of homes within a certain block radius being bought out in the future to expand parking and Packer-centered venues (with the Packer organization maybe paying top dollar or more).  Infact, some investors have started purchasing and remodeling homes, both for rental and to boost value in order to take advantage of this location.

It's a struggle for local homeowners who have witnessed the incredible growth surrounding Lombardi Ave. and Oneida Street, especially if they can't afford to (or don't want to) move.  The direct alignment of residential and commercial property is Green Bay can certainly have negative and positive effects.

Beth,

I completely understand.  As the activity increases in the neighborhood it really changes things.  We have the same dilemma near the Wisconsin State Fair Park.  People use their yards for parking for many events.  Some leave for vacation when the Fair is going on.  Some really get into it.

I would hate to be "pushed" out of a home I'm happy with as the area changes, but that's progress!  I've seen the famous "party house" on TV - the one that has the basement finished off, etc.  It looks like a nice home, and a nice vacation spot!

Thanks for stopping by!

Bill - I wouldn't want to rent my own house out.  Not unless it is a bedroom and bath and I'm staying home.  In my area quite a few people rented out their homes for the Harley Davidson 100th and 105th Anniversary celebrations.  Some rented out their yards for camping... I considered renting out my RV, but couldn't quite do it....

I have rented out homes when I go to races in other areas of the country.  It was nice staying at a home instead of a hotel.  One homeowner even let us use their gas grill and left us church leaflets.  It was very welcoming.

WOW...this is a tough one. Being so close to the stadium, I can understand why the homeowners want to take advantage of the opportunity. BUT...on the other hand...if you are NOT benefiting from ALL the noise...you'd certainly feel differently. Like I said...TOUGH situation. GBU!

April,

I am ever amazed at what people think is an acceptable way to act!

Two comments:

  1. I learned in Driver's Ed in high school (1972) not to tailgate. The general rule was to leave space between you and the car in front of you that equaled one car length for every 10 mph. So if I were going 100 mph, I would leave 10 car lengths. Oooops. You realize I don't speed, right? LOL
  2. Our problem down this way are college mini-dorms. That's where an owner rents his property to any number of college students, depending on just how close those college students want to be to each other.
In some cases they put two students in every room and even turn the family room and living room into makeshift bedrooms.
There have been instances of ten students living in a 1,500-SF 3 bed/2 bath house. Of course, each student has a car, and lots of friends. When you get five houses on the same block doing that, it creates a real mess.

We had a problem here with drinking on the beaches. So all the beaches passed ordinances prohibiting drinking on the beach. Guess where all the beer drinkers have moved to? Yep. Into the residential areas. Now the home owners are complaining about all the displaced beer drinkings leaving garbage on their lawns. I guess we can just ship them all to some foreign country or return to prohibition, although if it didn't work then, I doubt that it will work now.

April, while I love a good tailgate before a big game, I too would be annoyed at the nuisance in my neighborhood. But I'd sure love to be able one day to attend a Green Bay game...it's got to be a great experience. Good post!

Yikes!  While I love me a good tail gate, that seems to be a little out of hand!

I can certainly understand why people who live in the neighborhood would be aggravated by the situation. It will be interesting to see what the city does about this.
