How can you find a Buyers Agent to represent you? Nabbing the first agent that you talk to may not be your best move. You need to find someone that you are comfortable with and confident in.

Once you understand the benefits of having a Buyer's Agent represent you in your next home purchase, you may be wondering HOW to find one. Well, there are a few ways...

Talking to Friends1. Ask your friends, family and co-workers about the Buyers Agent they used when they bought their last home and if they would recommend them. If they remember them and would recommend them, take a few moments and talk to that agent. Remember, you do not need to use the first agent that you talk to, no matter how much your sister liked them. YOU need to like them.

2. Call the main office of a local real estate company and ask to speak with the employing or managing broker. First, tell them that you are looking to buy a home and are interviewing Buyer's Agents. Then ask if they could  recommend a Buyer's Agent that has experience and time to help you find your next home. In many cases, the employing or managing broker will guide you to an agent that will be worth talking to.

3. Check out a local ABR- Some Real Estate agents take specific courses in buyer representation, giving them the designation of ABR- Accredited Buyer Representative. They get this designation through the REBAC (Real Estate Buyer's Agent Council)- a division of NAR (National Association of Realtors). Many people are big promoters of Realtor designations, like this one. I have yet to make up my mind. Designations do not necessarily make better agents, but this is a tool that you could use to find a Buyer's Agent. Just visit the REBAC site and you can find a list of ABR's in your area.

2 People and a HouseOnce you have a few names of potential Buyer's Agents, you will want to interview them- over the phone is just fine. Nothing major. A good Buyer's Agent should never shy away from answers, nor avoid any questions. A good Buyers Agent will be completely honest - even if it means that their answers will cause you to choose a different agent.

Mariana - the "buyer's agent" series you just put together is amazing!!  what a great tool.  I will certainly bookmark these for future reference.  You cover every base and question a consumer may have prior to working with an agent when buying...awesome job!

Great information, Mariana. It is critical to interview the agent you are considering using, IMO. I have written about this subject too and the value is in doing your research thoroughly. Going to Open Houses can, sometimes, help you find an agent if you are not able to get one through referral, which is probably the best way, if you can.

Some great advice for consumers - we all love numerated lists.

As much as we think our consumers know, many times they don't.  It is surprising sometimes.  It is better to assume complete ignorance when serving and educating - our clients will be relieved in their knowledge and comfortable in ours.
