Social media handymanConsider this an official announcement. I'm coming back to Active Rain, not as the Blog Coach, which was my old moniker, but as the "Social Media Handyman."

Here's some background on why and why now...

  • I've learned a great deal about how to use social media for marketing purposes and have a penchant to teach others as well. (That's always been the case.)
  • There are quite a number of Realtors just entering this space and they have many questions that I hope to be able to answer. Even those who've been doing this for a while need training on more advanced topics.
  • I've recently gotten reconnected to the RE.net world and, frankly, Realty bloggers are some of my favorite people in the world. Many are great friends too.
  • I've always felt that we each have a responsibility to share what we've learned. "Pay it forward" as they say.

Here's the idea and the plan...(at least what I've conceived thus far)

  • I'll do a daily (hopefully) video, audio and/or text update sharing a tip, idea or bit of advice on the use of blogs and social media for marketing purposes.
  • I'll post here within AR for Realtors and use the new Outside Blog feature to reach those outside RE. Make sense?
  • The way I'd really like to see this work is that you submit questions. I want this to be a blog where your itch gets stratched.
  • In the near future, I'm going to be rolling out a suite of fee-based services to help Realtors and others market themselves via social media.

Why "social media handyman?"

It's a moniker that seems to fit very well. I tend to be practical and tactical in my approach to the use of social media for marketing purposes. Plus, I'm a bit of a "jack of all trades." I'll leave the master craftsmanship up to those who specialize in one area or another, such as blog design, for example. (And I'll serve as a referral source for those as the need arises.)

So, here we go again! I realize there is some liability here as I've been out of the RE.net loop for some time. However, I know my limits and will not attempt to pass myself off as a real estate marketing expert. What I know can be used by most anyone in any industry.

Also, I'll be fleshing out the branding aspects for a while, so consider this a work in progress.

It's good to be back. AR feels like home.

I'm glad that you are back. It seems that places like MySpace, LinkedIn, Trulia®, Active|Rain, FaceBook, etc. are huge and growing force. I get frazzled, sometimes with all the nuances. A "handyman" could come in handy!

Paul, this is a fantastic idea and I can't wait to see the posts start coming.  To get this rolling, here're some of my questions:

A little background first, I started blogging about a year ago here on AR and expanded into an outside blog - actually several now.  I've learned a lot about different social networks and joined quite a lot, but participate actively in only a few - twitter, facebook, linkedin and utterli (so easy to syndicate content on utterli.)

  • What are the top 3 social networks that you recommend joining and actively participate in and why?
  • How do we effectively reach out to our local community via social media.  Currently, I see a lot of realtor to realtor conversations, but very few community member conversations.
  • How do we leverage these networks to syndicate our posts and bring attention to our blogs.  For ex. I currently update twitter, plaxo, friendfeed (maybe more - can't keep track) with my posts to drive traffic to my site, but am afraid that it's too "salesy" for the consumers that I'm trying to attract.
  • How do we encourage comments on our posts?  I have pretty good traffic, but minimal comments.
  • What is the easiest and simplest way to get into video recording - find the video piece a bit overwhelming.  :-)

How is that for a list of questions to start with?  More to come, I'm sure.  Careful what you ask for.  :-)

Paul- nice to see you back and I love the idea of a social media handyman!  I need a handyman!  I would like to learn your opinion on how to allocate time -- balance -- can one be in all these places at one time?  What about real life networking -- how does one balance everything?

Paul, I could use a handyman to help me through the nuances of all these social sites! I just posted on my frustration with facebook the other day, so I may be tapping your expertise there!

Hello, and welcome back!

Welcome back, Paul! I've learned a lot about blogging from Active Rain, and now I'm looking forward to learning about Social Networking. I know it's out there and getting increasingly popular, but need to know:

what do you Twitter and why?

how do you take advantage of all the sites, get synergy, get connections, and still have time to sell real estate?

Thanks!

Wow! Talk about a welcome home party. You guys know how to throw one. I have to tell you, honestly, I wasn't expecting this. I figured I'd ease back in somewhat under the radar, and hopefully build a readership again over time. But, noooo!!!! :-)

I'm so encouraged by this response and eager to help serve this community in any way I can by sharing what I know and what I'm learning. And, let's face it. We'll all still just learning.

I have one request of you. Promise that whatever you learn from me, you'll pass along to others. Pay it forward as they say. Deal? Deal!
