My mom's boyfriend is a psychologist, so they often have the opportunity to travel to medical conventions throughout the world, as well as go to free events here in San Diego.

For example, last week one of the drug companies was hosting a free event at the San Diego Zoo. So here on my desk is an article titled, "How MDs Learn About Drugs."

The article starts out, "Most doctors get information about new drugs from representatives of pharmaceutical companies." Duh, duh, duh, duh, and duh!

Seems that some patient care advocates worry that the information is one-sided. Hmmmm. Perhaps only in the sense that the bigger companies tend to give away more free samples.

Seems that they also worry that small gifts, free lunches, free events, free trips to the Zoo, etc., might influence doctors. Duh, duh, duh, duh, and duh!

Seems that two senators have introduced legislation to use taxpayer's money to train "independent health professionals" to develop standardized information packets on specific drugs. No, no, no, no, and no.

The FDA has to approve drugs before releasing them to the marketplace. The process is quite stringent. As long as the drug does what the company and the FDA have determined that it does, I'm not in favor of spending money one such one more level of bureaucracy. When does it end? Let's end it now. I'll repeat my cry from a previous blog entry of mine:

STOP THE INSANITY!

Boy howdy! The bureaucrats are always thinking of ways to keep themselves employed! The term 'nanny state' is just so appropriate any more.  I don't like the FDA's control of the drugs available to us (which is not to say I don't think there is a need for oversight!) but to have a watchdog watching the watchdog is just too much, no?

And how come doctors can't learn about drugs at school like the rest of us did?  ;>
