I've had pets all my life, but one thing that I've never done is let a pet loose inside the car while I'm driving, much less letting it lay on my lap or hang out the car window.

I just consider that to be stupid, stupid, stupid, with apologies to all who might do so. Our famous Governor/Actor/Terminator apparently disagrees with me because he recently vetoed legislation making it illegal to drive with animals on your lap. The representative who introduced the legislation did so after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap. I'm glad I don't live in his district.

It's difficult enough to drive a car and pay attention to what's going on around me, but to have a loose animal, or several animals, in the car that can be spooked by just about anything is not responsible driving, in my ever so humble opinion.

Even if your animal is the best trained and most docile animal in the world, if a tire blow-out happens, or you get in an accident, that docile animal won't be so docile anymore because it's never experienced those conditions, so it won't know what to do other than what its survival instinct tells it to do. That could mean clawing and biting, which will just make matters worse for you. Ultimately, it could mean death for your animal, you, and possibly others around you.

If you truly love your animals, not to mention your own life and the lives of those around you, leave those pets at home or put them in an appropriate carrying case for transport in the car.

Lives are too precious to put them at risk unnecessarily.

I always think they are goign to go flying out of those windows....  I would never drive with a dog on my lap - of course my dog is a 200 pond Newfoundland!!! )

You must live in Florida with me. I can't wait for one of those people to have an accident so I can testify against them.

I heard about the proposed legislation, but didn't know that The Govenator had nixed it!  I think pets should remain safe and that means no driving!

I agree.  I am especially frazzled when I see a loose unchained pet in the back of a pickup driving down the street.

Jim, I couldn't agree more, however, not everyone does and well, I think they're looking for you.

I see way too many dogs riding in the backs of pick-up trucks down here.  It always worries me that they might get hurt.

As a animal lover, owner, and advacate, I totally agree. Our beloved four legged friends belong at home. Not joy riding on owners laps. Which brings me to my biggest pet peeve....owners leaving pets in the car as they run "quick" into the store.

Hi Jim, You have hit on one of my pet peeves (no pun intended).  If you love your pets, protect them.  Seat belts for adults and approved car seats for little kids are required by law for the simple reason that they save lives.  Our pets can't understand that their lives are at risk by riding loose in the car or in the back of a pickup truck.  Protecting them is our responsibility, and they trust us to keep them safe.  When I read that Arnold had vetoed that bill, I was really upset and wrote him a letter about it.  I still don't understand his reasoning.

Jim, THANK YOU!  I agree 100% it's stupid, stupid, stupid!  I see people all the time driving around with their pet's (dog's) on their laps!  Every time I see it I think "you have got to be kidding me!"  That is an accident waiting to happen, if they were in an accident and hurt someone or worse killed someone what are they going to say "Oh my dog was in the way?"  Hmmm....sorry folks, there should be a law against it.   FYI, I am an animal lover as well, always have been, but that is so irresponsible.
