I love reading about government and university research, because it often seems useless. This is one of those that, on the surface, is just hilarious.

Researchers in Ohio have been feeding alcohol to bees to determine what effect it has on them. My question would be, "Who cares?" Are the bees having difficult finding water? Are college students at Ohio State University leaving puddles of beer around that subsequently gets the bees drunk?

In bipartisan fairness in this political season, someone apparently determined that the honeybee's reaction to alcohol is very similar to that of humans, so they can be used to study problems that might affect humans. Hmmm. Where are the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals now? LOL

Low alcohol consumption produced mild changes in the bee's behavior, but bees that drank too much alcohol did just what humans do, passing out flat on their backs.

Oh, if only the video were available online. LOL

Ok, now I'm curious...can they get in trouble in their society for drinking and flying?  Have they had mid-air collisions?  If so, did they get hurt?  Did one or both die?  Oh, this could cause so many problems.  And what happens if a bee becomes an alcoholic and then they quit giving them the booze?  How will they treat the withdrawal symtoms, or will they just let the poor creature suffer?

I can't imagine that any animal would not have the same effect. My big question is why and who is paying this researcher to feed booze to bees?
