If I had the money I would buy this house. Once upon a time someone loved it...

I was saddened to see it in such disrepair as it grinned at me from a barren yard...

I marveled at the stonework and longed to see the inside... I wanted to leave my card for the owner.

Alas, there was no mail box, no sign, no post, no plastic folder... There was nothing for me to do but wait

and hope that one day soon someone would come to care for it the way that I wanted to.

Once upon a time someone loved this house... I knew I could love it too...

Carolyn, I love old architecture too. You could see the craftsmanship here, but time has worn it down. It would be nice to restore it to its grandeur.

Gary, that was exactly what I was thinking. I have friends that are outstanding designers, master carpenters, painters, sculptors... My neighbor is a partner in an extremely talented design firm. You can view an example of their construction work in my post on Cocina Latina. We have spoken about trying to find a house to rehabilitate and my heart flipped when I found this one.

I feel the same way about old farm and plantation homes.  You just know they were vital to someones livelihood and loved by the family that lived there.  The stories they must have.

C.-Wow, this home is amazing. I bet it was really beautiful at one time. I would also like to see the inside, so if you do get to go in it--do not forget the 'EYE CANDY".  Thanks for sharing.

C - What a beautiful home and it looks like it may be haunted. I wouldn't have a problem fixing it up and living in it. And if it was haunted and I couldn't help calm down the spirits I would turn around and sell it with a profit.

Morning C,

Friends of ours, that live in central New York State, recently bought a hillside home very much like this one. It too needed to be shown the love and care it once enjoyed. Their undertaking will take some time, but their efforts are already obvious to passers-by.

I would love to be able to buy and bring this one back to its orginal state.

Interesting looking place, looks like an American four square, with a turret and tower added, wonderful setting, hopefully the backyard has alley assess so you don't have to climb those steps in the winter. Did you do some research to find out who owns it?

Carolyn ~ What a great house!  I'm sure it's the "haunted house" for the neighborhood right now though.  How old is it do you think?  I'm intrigued that there was no mailbox, realtor sign or any indication of how to contact the owner. I guess you'd have to find out with old-fashioned footwork at the clerk's office if you were that interested in it.

Hal, it's wonderful your friends have taken on such a major project. I'm with you on this one - I'd buy it too if I could figure out how. Elizabeth Weintraub did such a fantastic remodel series. I bet I'd have fun following in her foot steps. The pictures and video would be very interesting. Who knows what we'd possibly discover if we ever starting working in there. I keep wondering if there is a fireplace and what materials would have been used for it. :-)

Oh C, this home breaks my heart! (so many things on AR are doing that to me tonight).  I love it so much.  Is it even for sale?  Maybe when you start closing mega deals (and I know you will because you have great karma and a strong work ethic).  You can buy it and bring it back to it's original grandeur!  It looks big enough to have lots of out of town guests too...wink wink!

Thank you, Vickie. I was just talking to a new buyer yesterday who was very sad about losing his home several years ago because one spouse became ill and they fell behind in their payments. Up until the medical bills, they had pristine credit. It is so hard to catch up when a person falls behind. I hate when people assume the reasons why something is the way it is without looking into each individual fact of the matter. When I look at this home I always find myself wondering what happened and where are the people who own this home...

Is the house in a historic neighborhood? If it is, might the historical society get involved? I live in one of several in Alexandria VA. A house like that should be restored. Though, the; H.S. can be a pain in the neck if you own a historic home. If you want to change say, the windows or back fence. But, they can help with these old homes that have fallen in to disrepair.

Susan, many grand events must have happened in that magnificent structure.  It would be terrific to trace the ownership history on it, and the history of the family, or families, who once inhabited the house.  It might make for some terrific stories about a very elegant time.  Who knows in what part of history the stories surrounding this house might be.  Imagination leads to many ideas!  Thank you for the great post.
