There are many folks at Active Rain that use Twitter. You can count me as one of them but I am not as active as some others are.

According to Wikipedia the definition of Twitter is "a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows its users to send and read other users' updates (otherwise known as tweets), which are text-based posts of up to 140 characters in length.

Updates are displayed on the user's profile page and delivered to other users who have signed up to receive them. The sender can restrict delivery to those in his or her circle of friends (delivery to everyone being the default). Users can receive updates via the Twitter website, instant messaging, SMS, RSS, email or through an application such as Twitterrific or Facebook."

I like sending my updates of different things I have posted at my blogs and other interesting things I may have seen on the net.

I am not like many who seem to use it as an instant email function and blab with their friends all day. This function of twitter seems to be a major waste of ones time. I suspect it is why many do not understand twitter. ANYWAYS...........

Did you know that Twitter has a directory? For those that don't it is called Twellow. You are able to use the directory when you want to find someone in a specific industry. You can also search for a person by name and by area. Here is a screen shot of what the main page looks like.

You can see there is a Real Estate category. By visiting the site and clicking this link you will see quite a few Active Rain Members. You may want to make sure you are in the directory!!

Want to learn more about Twitter and it's uses? Here are some excellent posts:

There is much buzz online that Twitter will continue to grow in popularity. There are already large corporations that are using twitter as a form of communication. As an example Southwest Airlines uses Twitter to let customers know about various deals. There are more companies following suit weekly.

It looks like Twitter is here for the long haul.

Bill what you say about users (twits) who blab on twitter about their cats, dogs, divorces or eating ice cream/ chocolate do seem to cheapen or make it a major waste of time? there are so many useful websites but they are only as good as the users make them to be! How many websites do real estate agents/consultants need anyways?

I realize that agents must put themselves out there but if all they do is twit on twitter instead of selling real estate and promoting themselves then thats a problem! Any agents out there who actually networked and made a sale from the use of twitter lately?

Richard - More homework!

Stephen - I can not believe some of the garbage I see on twitter. The are members of AR that spend hours a day yacking about nothing of substance.

Karen - Your funny. I would add yourself to the directory if you are not there.

Shannon - Sorry to keep your bookmark file growing:)

Bill !  Thanks for the update !  I did not know about Twellow - so will look into it.  I agree that Twitter is around for the long haul - seems like it is getting a big following already and I see it on some of the TV networks too.  It is starting to feel good that I am feeling more in tune with some of the website where just a few months ago I knew nothing !  Thanks !!!!!

Didn't know about this, got an email from webpro news a couple of days ago and hadn't read it, all I saw was twitter information.  I don't hang out on twitter everyday either but I do enjoy going there to see whose on. Somedays I log onto twitbin and see all the conversations but only jump in when I have something to say.

LAST weekend we were all craving oreo's, so that was fun. Des went and bought them, Heather sent her husband, it was hysterical.

Bill, I am trying to discover my Twitter Voice... I am not a chatty cathy, but I am pithy. I feel funny talking about my blogs, or dogs, and I never know when to jump in . It kind of feels like an online pajama party to me, and I arrived late ( you have to be a chick to get that one)

My first tweet said: new to twiiter & feel like the world is a TUXEDO & I'm a pair of brown shoes....

Hi Bill:  Thank you for providing information regarding "Twellow".  As you know, I use "Twitter" on occasion.  I definitely can't relate to the constant updates but it seems to provide a good outlet to alert people to a new blog update, real estate listing, etc.

Additionally, I've met A | R members that I didn't know existed until I found them on "Twitter".  "MyBlogLog" is another.  The potential power of some of these social networking sites continues to amaze me!

Not again and Buddy you finally did it. I am now banging my head against a wall. Not to worry though as long as I'm careful the only thing that will happen to me is that I'll burn 100 calories per hour releasing my frustration :)

Okay. Well that just has to be the longest sentence ever :)
