As a Colorado Springs native I have often wondered about the history of Manitou Springs, Colorado. So I did some digging and this is what I found. I also add at the bottom some great information on what the statistics are now.
General William Jackson Palmer is the founder of Colorado Springs. He and the English physician, Dr. William Bell, first visited the springs of Manitou in 1868. Both fell in love with this beautiful valley, and pictured the area as a health spa. That was the vision when Manitou Springs was in its initial development. Then that vision started to fade and Manitou Springs becamse one of the original tourist destination in Colorado. Manitou Springs sits at the base of amazing mountain, Pikes Peak. It has a small town feel and flourishes with arts and great restaurants. You will enjoy shopping, playing at the penny arcade and the access it provides to the Pikes Peak cograil. You will also find many victorian style homes with a few newer development. It is a great place to visit and live, especially those into the art community.
