Life or death. Do you know what to do in an emergency? with a customer?

It is hot in Florida, it's cold in Montana...doesn't matter whether it's cold or hot.

Do you know CPR? Do you have candy for a diabetic? Do you know how to help you customer?

As Realtors/Agents out in the field, other than calling 911...are you skilled enough to aide your customer?

I really do wish it was mandatory that we all had to have basic life support.  My background is medical so I can provide BCLS to my customers...can you?

Today was very hot in Florida, my customer was looking exhausted as it was humid. I always have cold water and candy....guess it's my medical back ground..

Do you know what to do in an emergency?  Do you know BCLS?  Should you have to know?

Why not? Should this be a part of being a showing/listing agents responsibility...After all, your early response could save a life...sometimes if you can help them immediately...you save a life...

I have saved more than my two hands can count.....by having the education to be a basic life support provider..don't you think we should all have these skills?

Karen My background is medical as well, and i have kept up my BLS and always have a first aid kit in the car that I have had to use on more than one occasion. I believe it is something that should be known by everyone. You never know when you might need it!

I am first aid certified... but honestly it is so that I can keep my Forest Service Chain Sawyer permit and United Four Wheel Drive Association Backcountry Awareness Instructor permit active.

I have a background in medicine as well...one time paramedic. You should always be prepared - here in FLorida!

Twice I have been concerned about buyers I was showing homes to - because of vehicles stuck in deep snow (once mine, once the buyer's).  Thank the Lord they were both okay, but in Michigan we need to keep supplies for getting unstuck as well... especially out in the boonies where cell phones don't work.  I have to say, it's almost as bad as men not asking for directions.  If a vehicle is stuck, they MUST push it out, even if it might kill them!  Sorry guys, but this is just the plain truth! :)

Karen, as I am a lender, and not a Realtor, I wouldn't have even thought about this!  Great information for your fellow Realtors!

Do I have BCLS?  Heck yeah, and I am ACLS certified. Former medical myself. I thought about what your saying myslef Karen. People should also learn to use an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). At the very least call 911, even if you are not sure if you need 911, call it, better safe than sorry.

I think everyone should know CPR and take a refresher often...especially since they keep changing how they think it should be done.

Michael,

AED's pretty much give you instructions at a 6th grade level...so that is good...If you need to provide any type of care, you need to call 911.

Jean,

You are so right. I think when you get your voter registration card...you should have to also to a CPR course.

I think it should be mandatory for real estate agents.

Karen, this is a great post.  I think that I would be alright with the basic first aid, but I will admit, I don't carry water and candy with me in case of emergency.  Thanks for making us think!

These are things to consider. Emergencies to happen so it is a good idea to be prepared.

This is an excellent post.  I always carry water, energy bars and bananas, but I never thought about keeping candy on hand. Perhaps first aid courses should be part of our required CE? I think that's a great idea.

Bob & Carolin, and Susan,

Thank you so much! I agree, I still think basic life support should be a part of being an agent.

I always have candy, and aspirin, and water....I am BCLS qualified and diabetics know if their sugar is low, they usually have candy with them.  Water helps with dehydration, and in the case of chest pain, if it's not crushing...the first thing advised (as I have been taught) is to give, offer an aspirin.

Tony & Darcy,

It's my 25 years of medical experience and being married to my ex-husband who was an ER physician...mostly my own personal medical training...

I used to cardiac stress testing, then became the Director prior to Real Estate which has always been my passion.

I live in South Florida, so cold water is a necessity, along with some pretzels, candy, and aspirin...I just want my customer's to "live through the showings."

You never interview  people about their health history, so these are nice things to have along should a medicial event occur. K
