I've noticed a lot of people use YouTube videos in their blogs, but when you use too many, especially in one blog entry, it can significantly slow the loading time for your blog or a specific entry.
As with web sites, people here at Active Rain seem to be in a hurry when it comes to reading blogs and commenting. Some comment on the title of the blog entry, which can be really strange if the title has very little to do with the content of the blog entry, which is a common marketing tactic.
If your blog or any specific entry doesn't load fast enough, possible readers are off to someone else's blog and you lose their comment points.
Here's some help to speed things up when you use YouTube videos.
First, it's always fun to embed YouTube videos because that makes your own blog look much more hip and cool. It's embedding that really slows things down, though, because your Active Rain blog is constantly checking in with YouTube via that embed command. That's how that cool graphic shows up in your blog. So this tip is dedicated to you embedders out there.
YouTube, as with almost everyone in life, believes that bigger is better. Generally, that's true. So what YouTube has done with their HTML code is make it so that it shows up as large as possible on the great supermajority of the screens out there, regardless of what software or ISP they are using.
So when you go to embed a YouTube video, here is what the HTML code looks like:
That will give you a monster graphic that takes up a good deal of your screen. However, you don't have to do what YouTube wants you to do. You can decrease that graphic by 25%, 50%, 75%, or more.
In the above HTML code, you'll see object width="425" height="344". Instead of using those numbers, change them to something smaller.
For example, if you want the graphic to be
75% of its original size, use object width="319" height="258"
50% of its original size, use object width="213" height="172"
25% of its original size, use object width="107" height="86"
You'll notice very little, if any, deterioration in the quality of the video itself, and certainly no deterioration in the audio.

Russel, thanks for this interesting point. I did not realize you could change the size just that simple. I am for reducing anything that slows down the post.
Oh, Thank you Russel....I will bookmark this and read it more closely when the caffeine wears off!!! I really want to get a video cam like the one Carolyn Star has and uses in her blogs...Have you seen hers? She took some of her area homes and it turned out great. I am asking Santa, for the video camera for Christmas.
Russel-Great tip! I still think streaming from your own server is best but that takes a little more knowledge and time. This is a great tip for the casual YouTuber.
Jane-Carolyn's video is great! I'll keep my gutter comments about the music to myself. : )
I did two videos of Zoey, and one of the Birch Aquarium, using my cell phone and some free video editing software: http://www.mywiseoldgrandmother.com/entertainment1.html. Use the playlist to switch to the other two videos.
I used to do that, still would if I put in more than a couple videos. Of late, I have been using not more than one or two cuts to get my point across or to highlight some artist. I have read some negative posts on people posting too many youtube links, so been trying to keep things appealing to the general AR community.
All right Russel, you have waaaaaaaay too much information here for me, just slow down dude, please do not comment on my blogs yet, I need time to explore all the stuff you have just in this post. Thank you for the inside scoop, I appreciate that very much.
Thanks so much for all the pointers, every little bit helps. Have a great day and when you have a chance, please visit www.smithmtnlakeproperties.com .
Hello Russel, greetings from Brampton, ON, Canada.
Good article above. Checked your link and watched your music YouTube links. Tried to do it, found a link on YouTube, then back at my blog, copied the link, changed the size and bingo. What do I do next. Pasted the link in and thought this doesn't look right... didn't post it.
Is there a trick to put the link into the Blog. Please help,
Hi Russel- this is fabulous! I had used the smaller video setting on a recent post, but had no idea that I could re-size it further through adjusting the html code. I am in deep agreement regarding the desire for a fast-loading page. Thank you! ---Sara
