Whilst touring through our vast internet I came across a Widget on a blog that said "Twitter". I had heard of it before but never investigated it for myself. Of course my curiosity peeked: I clicked on it and was sent into a whole other dimension.

"What fun!" I thought as I made a cute little wall paper, customized the colors and fonts...."What's this?" I thought as I perused the formats..."I have to add a comment?  I'll do that later..."

Long story short:  I have NO idea what Twitter IS, and in the last 24 hours I have had 7 requests for people to "follow" me!!!!  What?!  Are you all stalking me?  (LOL)

Or is this another FaceBook style application that I'll have to spend even more time letting my virtual world know what I am doing every minute of every day?  DO my "followers" reply?  Does it "chat", does it "respond", do I have to put in a comment whenever someone else puts it their comment? Does this promote me or my business?

I need some help here as I'm afraid to drink the cool-aid not knowing what it might be spiked with?  Convince me that it's a good thing.... How do you weigh in?

Aloha Connie,

Tweet, tweet, tweet, and tweet! The concept is simple but it's usefulness is not allways easily obtained. Tweets, as they are called, are mini blogs only a few words long that our posted like blogs and you have people who subscribe (Followers) and those who post (Followed). Depending on who you follow and who follows you will determine the usefulnessof the application in your life and occupation. It's very much like the Facebook "what are you doing now" function.

For instance, there may be a local boutique that you love but you always miss their sales. If they have a twitter account they may post the sale info as a tweet and if you decide to follow their tweets you will theoretically be informed when they have something that interests you by text message or email.

I follow the local traffic report which updates car accidents and sends the info by text to my phone so I can avoid unexpected traffic jams. I turn off the update by phone when I'm not commuting.

I also follow other designers, friends, business associates, the surf report, local news channels, retailers, our US congress persons, artists, creative types, civic organizations, comedians and the list goes on.

Who follows me? All sorts of people who for some reason saw my tweet and are interested in what I tweet about. An obviously beneficial function of Twitter is when you post a blog on AR it can produce a tweet informing your followers and providing a link to your blog.

It's neat stuff but you have to edit and be aware of who and how your following someone. For instance News twitters are constant so if you don't want to get constant text messages all day turn of the notification by text.

Also, you may not want just any one following you; there are functions to limit your public exposure.

Like anything it takes a little getting used to.

Peace,

Annie ~ LOL I'm glad I'm not alone on this!  I was feeling rather inept.

Thank you, Kimo ~So are you suggesting I should partake of the cool aid? Maybe I'll just sip the cool aid and try it first?  I appreciate your input, I'll have to approach it with caution as I am already immersed in far too many "virtual" applications.  (What ever happened to picking up the telephone?)

Wait - there's traffic in Hawaii????? ;-D

Thanks, Wendy ~ I'm stillwondering.  It sounds as if it might be a little "labor intensive" to get it started.  Right now I'm still trying to figure the whole thing out, but Kimo's response definitely helped to shed some light on the application.

Connie this is so funny. I keep asking but I don't get an answer and I haven't had time to research. Thanks for the pulling it out and making it clear. I will give it a try when I have a second. kym

Kym ~It take a few more minutes than seconds,  sort of like setting up your AR profile.  Now that mine is up, I'm trying to find the usefulness of the application.  As Kimo mentioned, he uses it for traffic & surf reports, etc - my iPhone already does those things....  and it's not like AR where you can just fish through posts on subjects you enjoy to find people to "follow or be followed".

Does anyone else use Twitter and how do YOU use it?

Connie - I'm with you girlfriend.  I have asked, more than once now, why I need to be on twitter and I get answers like Kimo's that confuse me even more.  I, too, am following this post because, I'm sorry Kimo, your response didn't convince me that I need to be on twitter.

Hey Donne easy on Brother Kimo,

I agree with Kimo it is an active communication Internet network.  It is also a way to meet other Realtors and network.  Look at some of Active Rain top bloggers on Twitter. say no more.

Later,

Steve

Connie: When you figure this one out, let me know. I have a Twitter account and I occassionally tweet, but I'm sure I'm not using it to its full potential. I have to take the time to set up my blog as tweets, but alas I am too busy at the moment to take the time to do it. I am afraid to turn on alerts on my mobile phone. As it is I am getting 200 or more emails on my Crackberry everyday. I can't imagine getting everyone's tweets as well.

Kimo had some really good ideas for how to use it to good advantage. I'm going to follow up on some of that.

Donne ~ Don't give up on it just yet.  As with anything, I think it just needs some TLC to get the accounts going and prove it's usefullness.

Steven ~ I'm with you...  Maybe you can answer this though: How do I find Realtors in my area who I can link to the Twitter account?  Or is it sort of hunt-and-peck?

Michelle ~  I'm "following" YOU!  Great, the blind leading the blind!  =)
