Parthenon

If you saw the movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" you'll remember the father of the bride, a man set in his ways but with his family's best interest at heart.  And of course you will recall that he was constantly telling people the root word for any particular word was from the Greek language.  As far as Mr. Portokalos was concerned, all words have a Greek origin.

So what does this have to do with real estate?  Ask yourself this.... How often to you bring up real estate in a conversation?  Do people you meet, or even the people you are already acquainted with, know that you are in the real estate business?  Have you established yourself as the real estate "expert" among your friends and family?

In the movie, everyone knew that if you wanted to know the Greek root of any word he was the man to see.

In real life, does everyone know that if they want to know anything about real estate YOU are the one to see?

This doesn't mean be pushy or self-promoting.  It's not about meeting people and immediately trying to get their business.  It's about providing good information.  It's about being perceived as someone who is a subject matter expert.  It's about being the one people turn to when they need real estate help.

For instance, reently I attended a seminar on credit reports.  After the session I spoke with the lady sitting next to me.  She had brought her teenage daughter with her because she wanted her to learn about sound financial management at an early age (which I applaud her for).  We talked about ways for young people to establish credit and payment history.  We also discussed rental properties and how they pull credit as part of the application process.  Eventually, she mentioned she was considering purchasing a home and asked me for my card.

And then there was the referral from one of my husband's former co-workers.  He contacted me via email.  The message included the originally email from the person who referred me.

"....she really knows her stuff.  She's always sending me information on what's going on in our area and if I have any questions she's the one I call.  She helped ___________ buy his place."

This person has referred half a dozen people to me so far.

In today's uncertain economy many people are eager to talk to someone about the current market situation.  So do your research, know your numbers and be your local expert

BTW "Real Estate" has Greek roots. Real comes from Areios which means warlike or conflict and Estate comes from Eschatia which means the furthest part, edge or border.  So Areios Eschatia, conflict over borders, ergo Real EstateOk not really but hey, it sounded good. :)

You are so right. The interesting part is that I have always "talked real estate" but I was the one starting the conversation, the last 2 years, I do not have to start it. The moment people see me they have questions, and when they realize that you know your stuff they keep asking and asking and asking.

it is on every bodies mind.

Anita, really creative way to make the point.  Man, you had me buying that whole REAL ESTATE thing.  Interesting that the first business deal in the bible was a real estate deal, I think.  Thanks for the reminder to be the go-to person in your sphere.

Some say that the "real" in real estate comes from the Latin res, or "thing," something tangible.  Others say it derives from the origins of words like "realm," the land once presided over by kings.

I'm a word freak too...many do come to me to find out about words.  You have a good point about being the go-to person about real estate.

Thanks for what you wrote.  In this economic atmosphere everywhere I go people want to talk about real estate.

Great post! I know it seems like whether we are at family functions, children's events or shopping. People are always asking me about real estate and how things are going.  I truly enjoy being a source of information for these people. Plus, fortunately for me I love my job, so getting a chance to talk about it to people is very enjoyable!

Seems like everyone talks about real estate all the time. I often get calls from strangers who say, So and so, told me I should call you, because your are an expert. It such a compliment.

Anne - lately it's been hard to get people to stop talking about it. :)

Charlie - Thank you.  Nice to know I almost had you there.  Makes the time I spent researching actual Greek words (and their correct meanings) worthwhile.  :)

Suzanne - Thanks for that interesting info.  Word origins are often intriguing and I also find the origin of certain sayings/expressions pretty entertaining.

Allen - I try to help people understand our local market and how what they see on TV is not always indicative of how things are for us.  I'm not a "cheerleader" but I do like to look at the positive side of things.

Krista - Thanks.  When you love what you do it shows when you talk about it and I think people are really drawn to that.

Mary - It is really quite a compliment. Of course sometimes it's a little nerve wrecking trying to live up to those expectations.

Hi Anita, Watching that movie brought back my childhood memories - being in a Greek family is JUST like that movie.   And being in real estate is just like you said - making sure folks know you're in it.  If not you might as well be winking in the dark.

Anita, I saw the movie "My big fat Greek wedding" just recently and loved it, and your analogy between the father and Real Estate is very good.

In my career I have been trying to establish myself as the "go to person" for real estate in my area. Although I have years of experience, I've only lived in my Town for 6yrs so its been hard to do it in Town. I've been doing news articles in my local paper for a few years now and this has helped me tremendously to increase my exposure. Over the past two years, more people I know (like my pharmacist) will stop and ask me questions in the store, etc..

Once again, nice post it was really informative.

Great analogy!

I've been giving the "be the local expert" sermon for years, because it works. I've witnessed it over and over. Maybe if we spray a little Windex on it!

Christopher - Thanks so much.  I think it's wonderful that you are doing articles for your local paper.  What a great way to show your expertise!

Rene - Love that Windex bit.  :)
