BRISTOW, VA:   Police say a mother in Prince William County got quite a scare on Tuesday (10/7/08) morning when she found a man in the back seat of her car with her 6-year-old daughter, and investigators are still trying to track him down.

According to investigators, the suspect entered the garage of a home on Kennoway Court in Bristow at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday morning.  They say the 46-year-old woman who lives in the house had just put her purse and her 6-year-old daughter inside the car in the garage and walked several yards away toward the mail boxes.

Police say the woman heard her daughter scream, and she ran back to her house to find the man in the back seat of the car with her daughter. They say the woman screamed, and the suspect managed to push past her and escape on foot.

No one was hurt, and nothing was taken from the car.

Detectives are still searching for the man, who is described as being about 5'7" tall and weighing between 175 and 180 pounds with a stocky build.  Police say he was wearing a gray sweatshirt with the hood up, a loose-fitting scarf around the lower half of his face, black gloves and blue or black sweatpants.  They also say he had a raspy voice.

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the Prince William County Crime Solvers at (703) 670-3700 or (866) 411-TIPS

That's frightening, Chris Ann. It just goes to show that you can't turn your back for one second and must always be aware of your surroundings. You aren't even safe in the confines of your own garage anymore.

I was outside talking to my neighbor yesterday, after coming home from the office. I put my purse on the ground as we talked and noticed a kid riding by on his bicycle. Then I realized that kid could zip by and ride off with my purse, so I picked it up.

I had heard that a similar thing happened earlier the same morning in the Vint Hill area.  That the description was the same, but the individual was seen getting into or out of a silver Suburban.  Evidently he tried the same abduction attempt, it failed, so this person headed to our area.  Wonder why that was never mentioned.

Darlene:  That's really relevant.  I am puzzled why it wasn't mentioned.  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Chris.  I just saw this.  We live in Sheffield and while there have been a number of home invasions, no attempted abductions yet.  You CANNOT be aware enough.  We don't even let our daughter go out into the yard for extended periods without being at least on the deck!
