Titanic grave site in Halifax, Nova Scotia

On April 10th, 1912 the Titanic set out from Europe on its fatal maiden voyage to the states. In Halifax Nova Scotia, 5.5 hours from Houlton Maine we visited a cemetery while taking oldest son to tour Dalhousie, a university in Halifax, a city of 300,000 . These images from the cemetery might impact the Active Rain community in a silent, solemn way. Still hard to believe how many folks lost their lives due to chaos, unfilled life boats, too few life boats and lack of SOS protocol for the time of sea disasters.

Very touching. Very nice photo's, did you post them in Great Shots also?

It is sad to even think about. I am thankful that we have taken a disaster and learned from it, improving shipping for everyone.

Am registered there but have not down loaded these images...photography is a hobby, a passion but paying for sneakers and groceries for the kids means peddling property as primary mission of the day to day. Glad you liked the images...it is pretty powerful when you view the 200 plus graves and who is interned in this cemetary. Always thought the Titanic was out in the middle of the ocean and it was off the coast of Halifax which is in our backyard. My two boys were pretty speechless when they read the different inscriptions in total silence. The unknown child grave really really hits you with the gravity of the situation...what a peril when you take away the Hollywood romance of the movie. It was a real life tragedy. The graves of unknown passengers makes you wonder who they are, what their hopes and dreams were, what it was like in the horror of it all in the middle of the night in ice cold water with total confusion of sights, sounds, smells, etc. Everything happening with casual speed when the boat was touted as indestructable on its first and last voyage. There are no guarantees in life.

Thank you for sharing. I never knew this was there. Something I would like to visit with my kids and relate the tragedy with them. We have the Titanic Exhibit coming to Denver. My kids are looking forward to going to it.

It was a surprise to me too...live kinda close and never knew the earlier history. The movie and discovery of wreck really put the spotlight on this event in history. Good did come out of marine diaster rules, life boat requirements, drills, sos protocol, etc. Makes you stop in your tracks to read and take in the extent of the wreck and loss of life.
