Good Day All!!!

I wanted to share some helpful moving tips that have worked well with clients of mine.  This is a nice Moving check list that I will break up in three parts, Before you Move, Moving Day, and Delivery Day. Today I will share with you ‘Before you Move'. This information tends to apply to a long distance moves, but can also apply to local or storage moves as well.

 Before you Move

  1. Obtain the brochure Ready To Move? And the booklet Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move from the mover.
  2. Ask for recommendations from neighbors, friends, and relatives about movers they have used or heard about.
  3. Check with the Better Business Bureau.
  4. Find out what the movers responsibilities are for damages that may occur to your household goods.
  5. Ask if the mover has a dispute settlement programs.
  6. Obtain estimates from at least three movers, and compare cost and all other services to be provided by the mover.
  7. Check to determine whether the interstate mover is registered with FMCSA and has a USDOT number.  For Intrastate (within a state), check to see if your mover is registered with that state.
  8. Find out how and when pickup and delivery of your household good will occur.
  9. Ask the mover how they can be contacted before the move, during the move, and after the move.
  10. Adequately insure your household goods.

Ruben,

Welcome to Active Rain. What great information! Thank you for those details we often forget in the frenzy of preparing to move. A question for you-are there any guidelines or suggestions to assist homeowners in determining how much to insure your household goods for? I know some people keep immaculate video diaries of their valuables, or are meticulous with receipts, but I know it would be hard for me to estimate those costs.

Hi Leigh,

Excellent Question!  Most moving companies will offer additional valuation at a cost.  The amount of coverage is usually based off the estimated weight for the shipment.  Example, if your home estimated weight is 10,000 pounds, a moving company may offer $5 per pound, or $50,000 in valuation.  However, for some this amount would work and then again some may feel it's not enough.  It is really up to the customer to decide how much.  I would caution taking out the basic coverage which is .60/per pound.  Unless the customer has outside insurance coverage.  Otherwise, it a moving company damages a 100 pound piece, they will mail you a check for $60 reguardless of value.

I hope this helps!

Take Care,

Ruben
