I don't know about you....but I remember loving to go to bed early so I could.... 

snuggle under and.......      my Nancy Drews ...     Later when I had girls of my own ..........I searched the used books stores and bought the whole series again.....and read them to my girls........reliving the excitement of childhood mysteries...

 Dog-eared pages & indelible inscriptions...there is nothing like a book!

                                                      

Well, thanks to our neighbourhood Used Book Stores we can  walk through aisle upon aisle of Books including, mysteries, science fiction and fantasy,  modern lit and metaphysics, children's lit, history, rock, classics, Canadiana, cookboosk, film, music, art, romance, poetry, plays, military, horror, transportation, true crime and Antique books...

                                              

With the downturn in the economy and people searching for more ways to save.....the Used Book store  offers books at a fraction of the cost.....

Now to the point of this Blog!  -  I wanted to share with you MY NEIGHBOUROOD Used Bookstore!  Some 12 years ago David Short decided to turn his passion for books by opening up  his own bookstore - His own 'Little Shop Around the 'Corner...The Book Hunter became the The Book Man!  It wasn't long after...that his daughter Amber Short...

                                             

...joined the family business and added her passion and ingenuity - not to mention her Internet Savy to this Family Venture!

The Bookman - is truly            with over 5,000 square feet of books, records and periodicals........located on Wellington in the heart of historic Chilliwack.  This store has more books in the storage room then most book stores have on the shelves!  In a very short time - it has become Second only to Penticton's Books n'things - as the largest Used bookstore in Western Canada. 

        

 

                               

The books are selected for quality and condition and to compliment their collection and hopefully yours! The staff is amazing - and with over 40 years of combined experience in the used books business......these people provide exceptional service, and are a super resource!

   

      There's a large children's area - with over 5,000 books......and a delightful little play area...

                                         

And One of my Favorites...........the BookMark Bathroom!  :-) We all know where most of the reading is done for some of you!

 For those that say that Computers and the Internet have changed our reading habits....its true........but here it is being utilized to  keeping the store diversified and expanding.....Both David and Amber subscribe to the belief that computers will never replace books....!  Internet sales have opened the store to readers from around the world as far away as Australia and Europe........They even sold an obscure photography book to the Metropolitan Museum of Art not long ago!

It's the saga of the small bookstore forced to shut down because of the mega bookstore.....and yet Amber Short and her father David Short, the owners of the The Bookman somehow have defied the odds..                                                                                                                      

                                                

Book lovers are a special breed....and there's  a certain thrill to be had when discovering a book you've been looking for for a long time.  This is  an experience that both Amber and her Dad get to experience and share with their customers, time after time...

Liz- I love these old books and now it's so fun to share them with my kids.  I used to poor over the Nancy Drew books and was definitely a book worm when I was younger.  Always with my nose in a book even at the dinner table or under the covers with my nightlight when it was time to go to bed:-)

Liz, I love books and used bookstores.  I've always gotten a special thrill looking for a particular book and finding it when I had just about given up hope.  I still have my Nancy Drews, although not the whole collection.  My favorite bookstore name - Bent Pages in Houma, LA.  Perhaps I should do a post about it!

My sister thinks my son, husband and I are weird...our idea of a day out is a trip to Phoenix for a movie, lunch and hours at Barnes & Nobles.  My son would rather spend all of his time there than at the toy store...just like me:)

Hi Liz, I, too, love books and reading.  I just finished "Choosen by a Horse" by Susan Richards, it was excellent, especially for Horse Lovers. 

Your book store sounds wonderful.  There is one in downtown Princeton and I will have to stop in and take a look.

Liz, What a fantastic book store!  I love their bookmark wallpaper and respect them for giving back to their community. Wow, they really DO give back. What a neat idea, with the globes!  It seems they go above and beyond in making sure our future little leaders will have many great opportunities!  My hat goes off for Bookman.  Talk about paying it forward!

When I was single, I would take my kids to Barnes and Noble and we would spend hours there, just reading, and discovering new books.  We all loved it.  I need to find a good used book store here in Huntsville. I get on "reading benders" where I will read a book in a day or 2....I get engrossed and can't put it down. Yep, I'm a book nerd:)

Elizabeth.......Isn't it though?  The door is actually made of a bunch of bookmarks - its not wallpaper!  :-) And the 'pay it forward' that they do is super!  I do the reading benders 3 or 4 times a year for a couple of weeks at a time....then months of.....umm just blogging? :-)  Thanks for coming buy and commenting!

I always enjoy reading or hearing about local entrepreneurs who are successful, a book store is a very difficult business to stand out in against the chains.  This appears to be a store where I could get lost for hours.  As a child I had a voracious appetite for books, your photo of the child under the blanket with a flashlight brought back memories of when I would stay up late reading, unless my mother caught me.

Oh Paul it seems that many share the flashlight under covers story!  Imagine a parent telling you you can't read but have to go to bed!  Many parents today would probably give their eye teeth if only their kids would read!

Terri - you don't mean You've Got Mail right?...There are a few - I saw Definitely Maybe the other day - and they had a really cool part about the daughter searching for a book her dad had given her as a child -..........she searched for years..........then her love interest found it and kept it until they met again one day  - and gave it to her.  It was very moving - and special!

Thank you so much for this wonderful post Liz.  You truly flatter us, and we're really honoured that you chose to write about our store.  My father and I truly love what we do, and we try to reflect that in every aspect of the bookstore.  The true credit goes to our staff, though.  Without the tremendous team of people working here, our bookstore would not be the special place that it is.... and of course, we can't leave the cat out of it, he wouldn't be impressed with that!

hi Liz,

It looks like just my kind of place.....I could spend hours even DAYS in a place like that. I'm a collector of antique books and used bookstores are one of my favourite places to haunt.

Amber and her Dad have done a wonderful job with their bookstore and I'm amazed at the creativity and warmth of it all.

My Partner spent over 30 years working at Borders Books and Music and its subsidiaries (Waldenbooks, etc.). I've always loved the smell of books, from at least the age of 6 that I can remember. When I was in high school, all my friends were out causing trouble and testing the system while I was at the Texas A&I University library perusing all the books. I think half my high school friends have been, or currently are, in jail or prison.

I was wondering how far you are from Chilliwack General Hospital. I have a dear friend who's been in the hospital there, and at New Westminster Royal Columbian for the past 6 weeks and I was thinking about making him up a care package of books. Do you do anything like that? And do you have a catalouge of your inventory on the internet? If you could get back to me on this I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
