Cataloochee ElkThe Great Smoky Mountains is the most visited National Park in the United States. With over eleven million visitors a year, and within a day's drive of half of the countries population, many of the parks more popular areas can become quite crowded.

However, there are some places of unparalleled beauty and historic significance that are far removed from large numbers of Park visitors. One such place is the Cataloochee Valley. Because it requires a little more effort to get there, the Cataloochee Valley is rarely crowded; more than likely, there will be fewer visitors in this large area than in any other place in the park.

It is also here in Cataloochee, that the Park Service reintroduced elk earlier in the decade. Although elk roamed these mountains for hundreds of years, they were extirpated by settlers in the 19th and early 20th Centuries. In an effort to return the ecosystem to its historic diversity, the elk have been imported from western parks into the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Elk in the great Smoky MountainsThe result is a spectacular addition to the plethora of wildlife already in the park. If you arrive in the early morning or stay into the late evening, you may be rewarded by hearing a bull bugling. The sound is indescribable, high pitched and loud, and serves as both a call to his herd and as a warning to would-be interlopers.

Although the black bear used to be the star of the Smokies, the elk are fast replacing there ursine counterparts in popularity! And your chances of seeing elk in Cataloochee is great, as the herds have increased in number over the years.

So if you live in the east, and want to see elk in their natural habitat, come to Cataloochee in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. You will not be disappointed!

Richard...is that collar on the elk to tie him up for easy harvest.  Just kidding.  Glad to see the Natural resorces in your area working to restore the old nature it once had.  The radio collars they use nowdays sure help a lot!

Richard-You're on a roll my friend. Laughter for the soul in the morning and and wildlife education in a beautiful scenic park in the evening. WAY TO GO RICHARD!!!!! How far away were you when you took these amazing pics. I'm assuming you're the photographer. Who else, right. When I got home after a long day. I had this idea in my head for a topic for a blog and taking the advice I always am giving you about a rant I decided to find a creative way to express my feelings, but try and put more of a positive spin on my mood. So if I can find the one thing I'm looking for to add to it plus be able to stay awake and concentrate enough to do it then when you wake in the morning maybe I'll have a blog to share with you and hope you will enjoy it as much as I've been enjoying yours. You were actually part of the inspiration for the blog. So I hope I can do a good job. I do know one thing. It's not a good idea for me to mix cold medicine and then having to study for a test when you feel like your head gonna explode. That's as close as I'm going to allow myself to a rant.  Well my friend, I hope you have a good evening. I see you're playing in the rain, so enjoy. I'll talk to you again. Until our paths cross again KEEP BLOGGING, KEEP SMILING and ABOVE ALL KEEP THE FAITH. You might not think it was me if I didn't end with that you know. BTW-You have 83 days to go until the end of the year. In case you forgot. :-)))

Pat...

I used a medium length lens, 250MM. While not a telephoto, it enabled me t get close enough without approaching the animals, which is against park rules. I dd use a tripod, and I actually have a nice series of about 299 or so elk photos. More later, and thanks!

Ann...

A bull weighs in at 700 pounds, so that's a lot of dinner! lol

What gorgeous photos Richard.  Do you ever get tired of hearing this?  I hope not, it's meant from the heart.  Did you get the e-mail I sent with photos earlier this week?

Richard- I think the collar/necklace is very stylish! Great pictures and I have to tell you my husband is out in our local woods this morning hunting white tail deer. I hope he gets one. I like venison. Do you? Alan has never got an elk. Last year was his first year to hunt them and wasn't successful. Maybe this year. I like elk also. Very lean meat. BTW...I am catching up on my blog subscription comments today and you don't have to reply to all my comments...unless you don't have anything better to do !  :)

Richard - elk are pretty impressive. I have seen them in the wild in Oregon, Washington, Montana, Wyoming and Kentucky (largest elk herd east of the Mississippi). They are impressive beasts. The Cataloochee sounds like a good place to go see some again. Thanks.

April...

Yes I got the Powerpoint Show, very impressive! I liked the one with the boat and all of the Rays in the water.

Lori..

I only shoot with the camera! lol

Mike...

It is an excellent place for wildlife observation, and just over two hours from Athens!

JL...

The herd is quite large now ... I'll post more photos!

Liz...

I believe that the word "Cataloochee" is a aberration of a Cherokee word meaning "fringe standing straight up!"
