Did you hear this story about a girl that was taking a shower and all the sudden a snake came out of the drain and bit her on the ankle and then slid back into the drain? Good gosh, are we not safe anywhere? By the way, the chances of this happening is very slim, so don't think about it when you take your next shower......or maybe you should? :-)

Southmayd girl bitten by snake in shower

Posted: 1:03 PM Oct 7, 2008

SOUTHMAYD, Tex. -- A 15-year-old Southmayd girl was bitten by a snake while taking a shower Tuesday morning. Stephanie Brletic has the bizarre story from Southmayd.

The incident happened around 6:30 Tuesday morning at the girl's home on Sunny Road. Authorities say the girl was taking a shower when a snake came through the drain and bit her on the ankle, before it then slithered back into the drain.

The Sherman Fire Department responded to the home and made the decision to airlift the teen to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where she is listed in stable condition Tuesday afternoon.

Sherman fire Chief J.J. Jones says firefighters never saw the snake, but think it may have been poisonous.

"There was some swelling and indication that it may have been a poisonous snake. There was some attempt to retrieve the snake, but that was not successful," Jones said.

Neighbors say Tuesday’s incident scared them, but that it is not unusual. One even told us about a similar situation last week.

Jones says situations like these are not uncommon as the weather starts to cool.

"This is the time of the year that snakes are looking for some other environments. It was a cold morning. I'd say it's not uncommon, but it's certainly kind of rare for us."

Jones went on to say this is the time of year when you may start to see snakes more often. His advice if you do see a snake is to simply walk away.

The girl's gotta get some indoor plumbing so she doesn't get snakebit so often.  :-)

Well I once shot an elephant in my pajamas.  I guess you are wondering what the elephant was doing in my pajamas?

A friend in Oregon used to have a frog that lived inside of the bathtub drain - and they liked it there! (Never bit anyone, though)

hmmm...I build showers all day long.  Usually, we install a drain strainer that has holes that are about no more than 1/4" in diameter.  That must have been some snake.  First, I assume the water was running before the girl actually stepped into the shower (that's what I usually do) Secondly, the snake was so fast as to go against running water, bite the girl and duct back down into the drain or move into the toilet next door to suprise grandpa reading the paper in the morning.

Well, I guess anything can happen.  Last month here in Florida, a woman returned home to find a gator in her kitchen.

Good Luck Keith!

I once had a snake come through a laundry tub drain in that basement of my home in PA.  That scared me to death!  I can't imagine a snake coming through the shower drain!

I actually have heard of snakes and sewer rats coming up through commode drains.  I don't even want to think about that!

Kent - as stated above - get that girl a strainer.  Couldn't have been very big, we hope.  Had a mouse once that committed suicide in the toilet, wife didn't like it one bit.  Me I felt sorry for the poor mouse.

Man, you can't find any place any more where you canbe alone!  I heard of a man that was bitten in the butt while in an out house.  Tell the lass she should shower in doors!

Amazing what can happen.  I never assume something can't happen so I guess in my mind it can.

I'm not letting my daughter read this one, that's all I need is another excuse for her to use to try and get out of taking a shower, and yes I know that this too will change all too soon and she'll be taking 3 showers a day, but until then, she's not going to know about this one. :-)

Worked on a construction site a few years back where a young man got bitten by a black widow in the porta-john. It was under the lid and bit him in a most sensitive spot. He also was air lifted to a hospital. Not a good day.
