The Pink Ribbon Tour to promote awareness of breast cancer; wear your pink Oct. 25th, 26th and 27th!!
I recently went to visit my daughter in New York City. My sister flew in from Colorado and we planned a girl's weekend. It was great timing as I flew in on September 17th which was a welcome relief from dealing with Hurricane Ike in Houston. Mind you this was a planned trip but WOW it could not have had better planning.
The only thing we had totally planned was to see Wicked on Broadway. Before going to Wicked we had reservations at the Rainbow Room for dinner and as we were walking there we passed a Pink fire truck and gentlemen in pink fire fighter attire. I have visited my daughter quite often in the last few years as she had lived in New York City and you do see all kinds of sights and people but a pink fire truck across from Radio City Music Hall is a bit unique even for NYC. We walked past did a double turn and walked back. I had my new flip video with me and made the attached video where one of the firemen describes what they are doing.
This a group of firefighters, police officers and leaders in the community who are going across the United States in this pink fire truck trailing a 10 foot 3000 pound ribbon; raising awareness for the fight against breast cancer. If you notice all those names on the truck; those are names of breast cancer survivors that are signing the truck as it goes across the country.
The have a website at http://www.pinkribbontour.com/. It is very interesting but you do need to have a little patience as I found it slow to load. This is the brain child of Dave Graybill and he is writing a blog at http://pinkribbonnews.blogspot.com/ as they travel across the country.
They started their tour on August 24th from Phoenix AZ and end up in San Diego. They will have made a big circle; which you can see on the home page of their website. Come to find out they were here in Houston on September the 2nd. It just happened to be chance that we ran in to them in NCY on September 19th as that was the only day they were there. As I said my sister flew in from Colorado and if she so wished she could meet up with them again on October 11th as they will be in Broomfield Colorado. From there they continue on to the west through Salt Lake City. The last place that I could see on their tour was San Diego on October 23rd.
I got these statistics from their website but the 2007 expectations of breast cancer were that 240,510 women & 2,030 men would be diagnosed and 40,460 women & 450 men would die. That's one every 13 minutes. We all probably know someone who had had this disease. Just recently here in the rain we lost one of our own Karen George from breast cancer. The minute I saw this truck I thought of Karen.
What an incredible thing they are doing to promote breast cancer awareness and it is out of their own pockets. Now they do have something they want us to do; they are requesting that on October 25th, 26th and 27th public safety, local leader and citizens of the community wear something pink to show support for those battling breast cancer. This isn't just for the gals you guys. If these guys can pull off pink I know you can too.
CARE ENOUGH TO WEAR PINK ON OCTOBER 25th, 26th and 27th!!!
