Six more homes in the Rose Village Neighborhood will get fresh paint on Saturday, October 11, as part of the 4th Plain Corridor Revitalization Task Force Housing Coalition Paint-a-Thon.

The Rose Village Paint-a-Thon is the brainchild of Mark & Patti Maggiora.  Inspired by a southeast Portland Paint-athon that gets hundreds of volunteers each year to help improve the homes of area senior citizens, the Rose Village Paint-a-Thon is expected to yield some 20+ freshly painted homes in just 4 weeks.

"In addition to the obvious benefit of making the area look nicer," says Patty Carroll, "The Paint-a-Thon is getting neighbors to interact with each other and unite in achieving a common goal that will benefit us all."

Once a popular neighborhood where many of the city's long-term residents were raised, Rosemere / Rose Village had more recently been perceived as a highly transient area with an elevated crime rate.  The increase in property values seen in recent years, though, has drawn the attention of investors and value seeking home owners and many of the vintage and historic homes are benefiting from a renewed pride of ownership.  The team of volunteers who support the Rose Village Paint-a-Thon have the vision of increasing these positive trends and restoring the neighborhood to its former splendor.

This weekend, activities will be focused on a 3 block section of L St in Vancouver between 33rd Street and 37th Street.  Volunteers will start assembling at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday in front of Patty & Scott Carroll's recently renovated "church home" at 3409 L St, where they will get donuts and coffee before picking up their brushes and starting work on the 6 homes.  Lunch will also be provided by Patty & Scott Carroll.

If you would like to have your home considered as a candidate for painting or if you would like to volunteer to help with the Paint-a-Thon project, please call Mark & Patti Maggiora at (360) 992-9969 or email mark@groupnw.net or patty@groupnw.net.

Wow, what a nice idea and a great way to give back to the community. You should post some before, during and after pictures of the Paint-A-Thon.

Glad to see you back, I did one of these in 1990 with the Target stores in the Tigard area. It not only helped, but it was a lot of fun and I met a lot of great people.

We thought that we were getting 50 volunteers then we heard 20. We ended up with 8 all day volunteers and a total of 12 adult volunteers. We are continuing today starting at noon, boy are we sore!  : )

We were at it again today with 8 volunteers, it is looking really awesome.

We still have more on the homes to paint and so we will be back at it again tomorrow with 3 volunteers. Scott and I are getting pretty sore but keep telling ourselves that it is a great way to get exercise.

Can't wait until we post the before and afters.

Patty, what a great little neighborhood bonding activity!  I'm looking at a house across the street that really needs its trim sanded and painted!  The little old guy who lives there isn't too likely to do it.  Hmmm.  Maybe we could make it a block party!  We'd have to do a few houses so he wouldn't feel singled out!

Patricia -that is what we did. The paint was donated and volunteers are painting.

We have helped out neighbors in other homes that we have lived in with either cutting and hauling brush, painting or cleaning up their yards. There is always at least one house on the street that needs a bit of help.

It is amazing that they just don't think that it will make a difference. Once it is done and they see that it has made a difference then the homeowner keeps it up as they have pride of ownership.

Wow what an awesome program! I bet this type of program really helps forming bonds amongst the neighbors as well.

Sandy - These homes are 70-100 years old and they are looking so cute! We hope to get them finished up on the next sunny day. We still have the trim to finish on all 6 homes. Then we will post before and afters.

Rose, we have found that there are many areas in a community that can benefit from this. It is amazing how cute these are getting. It looks like we will be wrapping this up next weekend and we will post the before and afters. Neighbors are talking and doing other projects because now they have the inspiration. It's just fantastic!
