I am pleased to say my husband has endured his spinal fusion surgery like a trooper. Tuesday was surgery day and after 11.5 hours in recovery he finally got a bed. No complications from the surgery just logistics in the hospital getting a bed for him. After 2 days of practice walking, getting pain under control and the usual hospital stuff he is glad to be home.
However he has experienced an unusual and thoroughly irritating side effect, or at least we think it is a side effect of the anesthesia. Hiccups.Starting the day after surgery at 4 am in the morning, so Wednesday; now it is Friday and we are still going strong. It was 18 hours before he has a brief rest and we think the med they gave him helped a little. However it made him very sleepy. So now we have tried every known trick ion the book including bitters which had no effect at all. Research tells me it should not last more than 2 weeks and is likely due to the intubation rather than the meds, but there is no decisive answer.
He also got hiccups after having his epidural pain blocks last year. It may be funny to start with but after that long your diaphragm can really ache and vomiting is not out of the question. So we hope it will resolve itself soon.
I would like to say a great big thanks to Gregory Brebach, Orthopedic Surgeon Extrodinare. He has taken care of my back for 2 seperate surgeries and now my husbands and we both highly recommend him and his practice in Barrington. His bedside manner is exemplary, his talents as a surgeon are phenominal. So if you ever have the need for a spine surgeon, he is the go to Doc in our area. He practices out of Lake Cook Orthopedics on Route 22 in Barrington in The Smith Professional building. Just tell him Corinne sent you!
