Jump Start Your Creativity

SparksIt pays to stand out from the others in your line of work.  A little more creativity in your writing, advertising or just life in general could tip a few extra clients your way.

If you want to see something a little differently, DO things a little differently.

  • Take your laptop out to the porch and enjoy the spring breeze while you work.  Look up every now and then, it's allowed.  If you have dogs, they'll love to share "outdoor office" time with you.
  • Paint your home office.  Mine is going from bright spring green to a pale, soothing blue.  (I've also painted every room in the house, some twice, since we moved here three years ago.)  Even just rearranging things can help.
  • Learn something new.  Take a cooking class, teach yourself to knit online or try to pick up a new language.  You'll exercise your brain and have to think in new ways.
  • Go someplace totally new for lunch.  Go with a friend or alone, but pay attention to your surroundings.  If you have young school-age kids, arrange a lunch date with them in the cafeteria.  If they're still young enough not to be embarrassed by you, they'll love this.
  • Add to the family.  Take in an exchange student or buy a goldfish.  Have something new to care about.
  • Do nearly anything with kids.  Kids are fabulous "Creativity Jump Starters".  The goofier, the better.
  • Exercise.  Go for a walk, go to the gym - just get moving.  Your mind will wander while you move, you might be surprised where it goes.
  • READ.  Read everything, anything.  Always be reading SOMETHING.  It's a direct peek into someone else's thoughts.  Let a friend or coworker pick a book for you.
  • Travel.  Plan a great vacation somewhere you've never been.  Or at least dream about it.
  • Challenge your own creativity, the more you use it, the stronger it is.  How many ways can you think of to use Real Estate Shows?  What new marketing could you get just using your printer and some paper?
  • Do something FUN.  Put a smile on your face and make some happy memories!  When you go back to work, you'll have a fresh outlook.

IdeaDoing things the same old way will get you the same old results.  Shake up your life a little, have fun and see what happens!

Maybe you'll have a creative flash of insight that will completely change the direction of your business!  Or maybe not, maybe you just got to go somewhere new for lunch and had a good time.

Either way, not bad, huh?

Hi Sarah.. great points. change it up a little. i like that. Nick likes that! a very inspiring post. :)  i have one more method than i very recently stumbled upon, from a man with unbelievable insight. very deep...  if i may share,.. dont think. that's right..  blank out your mind. meditate or relax, close your eyes and breath. feel your inner calmness and stillness. don't search for it, but let it come from within your subconcious. its really cool. then again, what do i know?! ;^)

Hi Sarah- The key is to avoid repetition! Your post is certainly beneficial if we want to avoid burnout.

Find space to seek inner refuge, rekindle friendships, learn new hobbies and cboost reativity, recharge yourself with journaling or blogging...hey- I maybe need to add a post! :-)

Wow--it is so easy to get caught up in escrows, client problems and soon the day is over and you you wonder why everything you do sounds the same---we do need an infusion of new blood outside of Real Estate. Thanks for the reminder.

This was actually some really good advice. I do like to take walks to think, I've noticed I think clearlier...

Maybe I'll repaint my office. Thanks again!

Sarah- I painted my office a color called Green Tea. It is a sage-y green. I find it soo soothing. I like the idea of taking my laptop out on my patio to work. My dog would love it too. Now if only our crazy NW weather will cooperate!

Great pointers here Sarah! I have been wrestling with some changes that I want to make on my site and some other things, because I wasn't quite sure how they would be received, but it sure can't hurt!!! ;-)

I'll do it!

Nick - Thank you for the meditation class ... I could use a little help relaxing.  I can't imagine you ever not having fun!

Michele - Aah, did you have to go post?  LOL!

Sandra - Oh you poor thing!  You REALLY need to go somewhere new for lunch.  And get a good book.  And plan that vacation!

John - I love to paint.  Even the act of choosing colors, cutting in and cleaning up will get your mind working in different ways.  I hope you do it!

Debi - You have a point I should have mentioned -- when paint that office, choose the right color!  Do you want to pep up or calm down?  Thanks, Debi.  I wish you a pleasant heat-wave so you can work on your porch with the dog.

04/10/2007 05:49 PM by Sarah Cooper (Real Estate Shows)

Gwendolyn - Go for it!!  Try it, if you don't like it you can always change it again.  (Don't change it BACK, you already decided that wasn't working.)  Good for you!

Great suggestions!  Creativity, if nothing else, will make you feel better about yourself!  Hopefully it leads to increased business as well!

Sarah,  I received several auto-biographical books on high-powered women for Christmas.  I think my husband hid them.  I don't think he wants me to get any more new ideas.

Great post!

Sarah,

You are so inspirational! Everyone needs to shake up their everyday lives and foster creativity. I can't wait to get the laptop on the deck, but its still very cold here!!!!

04/10/2007 06:02 PM by Karen Hurst ~ Real Estate Broker ~ Warwick ~ Rhode Island (Storm Realty LLC)

Great post! I would suggest also meet more different people and try to really connect with them. :)

04/10/2007 06:02 PM by Edite Liepina - Lawrence (ERA Tradewind Real Estate)

Kaushik - You are so right -- you'll feel  better!  That alone is worth it, but you're likely to do better at work, too.

Rhonda - Trying to figure out where he hid them could be very creative as well.  ;o)

Karen - We had a warm spell and I got to do it a couple times.  Can't wait for it to warm back up again!

Edite - Thank you very much for your contribution!  I agree with this idea, it does work!

Thesa - Thank you very much!  Big smile for you!  :oD

Sarah: Maybe knitting...or adding to my family...read? I've run out of "Little Golden Books" and the new ones have lousy plots...well, plenty of food for thought here...I have a brain-ache!

Sarah-One of the things I love about this business is you never have the same day twice! I look forward to warmer days coming soon to bring the laptop on the porch and read a book on the beach!

Sarah

I was thinking today  -- as to how I can use the commercials so i am trying to get the creative juices flowing

Sarah, no wonder I like you so much. =) Great stuff here.  We need to keep things vibrant and these are some fabulous ways to do that.

Sarah...I know you love what you do...but you would do great as an Inspirational Speaker!

04/10/2007 08:45 PM by Joan Mirantz- Concord New Hampshire Realtor (Keeler Family Realtors)

Sarah great advice!

I am especially fond of the painting tip.  Our house has been so many different colors in the 2 and 1/2 years we've lived here that our family jokes that we are losing square footage as a result of all the layers of paint!

As always I enjoy reading your thoughts!

04/10/2007 09:34 PM by Julie Ferenzi (RE/MAX Professionals South)

Sarah,

Great post.  I had a light bulb go off in my head as I was reading your suggestions.  You are a wonderful resource.  Keep it up!

Sarah:  Splendid post on keeping it real!  I have been keeping it pretty balanced but have a hard time getting the AM exercise in!

04/10/2007 11:47 PM by Renee Burrows - Las Vegas NV Real Estate (Nevada Realty Solutions)

Sarah, thank you! I needed this tonight. Tank is a little empty and just reading this gave me some juice to keep going! :)

04/11/2007 01:08 AM by Jeff Turner (Real Estate Shows)

Good Morning Sarah-

You're right - anything to stir things up and keep you out of a rut mentally and/or physically is a major plus.

We get soooooo used to doing the same things over and over - a little kick can be a BIG deal!

04/11/2007 03:28 AM by Palm Beach Real Estate and Loans - Marc Blasi (Leibowitz Realty / Knightlines Mortgage)

I vote for pick an ethnic restaurant you've never eaten at an try a new cuisine! Persian, (Northern)Eastern Indian, Thai.  They're nothing like a great glass of Thai tea and coconut milk!

(you can always subsitute frozen manicotti and canned sauce)

04/11/2007 05:28 AM by Chris Elizabeth Griffith ~ Bonita Springs Fl Real Estate (Keller Williams Elite Realty, Bonita Springs, FL)

Jay - Your creativity is going full strength!  Whatever you're doing, just keep doing it.

Suzanne - I think that "never the same day twice" is one of the things I like best about this business!  It's naturally throwing changes our way, all the time!

Aziz - Have you looked through the RealEstateShows.com Users group?  You'll find LOADS of ideas in there!!  That'll get you thinking!

Maggie - If the commute weren't such a bear I'd ask you to try out a couple new restaurants with me!  :oD

Joan - Nope!  Too shy!  But thanks!

Julie - You made me laugh out loud!!  I thought I was the only one who wondered how long I could paint before I started to lose square footage!!  LOL!

Fran - Thank you very much.  :o)

Renee - You and me both!  It's been about three weeks since I've been to the gym, but yesterday I moved furniture and got things prepped to paint and the day before I hiked all over a huge, hilly property.  I think I'm good for this week anyway.

Jeff - Glad I could help ... but from reading your blog I know you already read, travel, eat at new places, you've got the kid angle covered AND new family members ... can't think of much I can add, but if it helped I'm glad!

Marc - You're always good for a kick in the pants!  ;o)  You're right, we need to keep things fresh or it's no fun anymore.

Chris - I know you have got this creativity bit DOWN.  I do not worry about your creativity, I merely enjoy it!

As soon as I get taxes behind me, I am going to re-arrange our living room and master bedroom.  That will be a good start.

04/11/2007 06:23 AM by Randy L. Prothero - Hawaii REALTORĀ® (Century 21 Liberty Homes)

Sarah.... some great advice here. Sometimes when this business sttresses me out, I like to take my laptop out by the creek. It is amazing how soothing the sound of running water is.

04/11/2007 08:44 AM by Michael Delp (Mortgage Pro)

I'm late responding.  Sorry.

Randy - Hope that worked out well for you!

Michael - I find myself needing my own advice now.  Glad I thought to write it down.  ;o)  And you're right about the creek.

09/08/2007 07:43 AM by Sarah Cooper (Real Estate Shows)

Sarah,

I needed this today. I have been in some kind of funk lately and I need to change it up a little...thank you for the burst of ideas and just what I need to get my juices flowing again.
