Whether you plan to move yourself or by a professional moving company, planning and getting ready are key to a successful move.

First of all, realize you own a lot more than you could possibly imagine. Sort thru the items and schedule a garage sale and a donation drop off for the remaining things.

Make your reservation to rent a truck or the moving company as early as possible. In fact, even if you don't have the correct date, provide them with an estimated moving date. Your own safety and that of your belongings is very important. Make sure you check out the reputation of the rental company and the condition of their trucks as well as the reputation of the moving company that you have chosen.

Here are some tips -

•·         Moving is expensive, have a garage sale and donate anything you have not used for over a year, it's a great tax deduction

•·         Most moving company will use quality boxed to protect your valuables

•·         The grocery boxes may not be the reinforced type

•·         Use pillows, blankets and towels to separate pictures and other fragile objects.

•·         Pack plates and glass objects vertically, instead  of flat

•·         Mark the boxes fragile of those special items

•·         Mark boxes were they should go, e.g. kitchen bathroom, etc

•·         Mark boxes for those items you will need right away

•·         Read your shippers contract carefully and ask questions

•·         Make note of your shipment registration #, along with your bill of lading

•·         Keep handy a file folder with your important documents

•·         If your shipment has to be stored, ask for the warehouse number

•·         Use colored tape to keep track of special items

•·         Make sure to update your insurance coverage

•·         Unpack as soon as possible to check and report damages

•·         You need an established  system to find things and make moving

as painless as possible

•·         Give your new phone number to people that may need to call you.
