How many times have you walked into a room and seen all signs of life sucked out of it? Bedrooms more specifically...

How many times have you walked into a home and seen the "master suite bed" look like this? "Clean & White" in this instance is usually portrayed as lack-luster or forgotten about.

Remember, most people spend over 33% of their lifetime IN THEIR BED! Why not make it the MOST welcoming, MOST luxurious, SHOW STOPPING stop in the house? Even if you're not selling your home, updating the look and feel of your bed can only benefit all parties "involved" - pardon the pun.

Here is a way to get a VERY expensive look, on a variety of budgets.

Option #1 - Only available through the Trade, WHOLESALE on this set is approx. $850 (Retail would be about $ 2,250, not including the sheets or down fillers.

Option #2 - Custom made by Designer using local vendors and bolt ends at DRASTICALLY reduced cost; however it IS custom and made to order. Approx cost $450.00, sheet set approx. $80.00 (Total: $530.00)

Option #3 - Duvet cover and sham set bought at local retailer about $70.00, sheet set approx. $45.00, various toss pillows approx $65.00 (Total: $180.00)

A great way to update ANY bed when Staging a home for sale: is to simply buy a great, reversible duvet and sham set in an eye popping color, or a new sheet set in a contrasting color to your current bedding. Pull the covers back and stack the pillows - viola!

If you're in a high end home and can afford the very best in fabrics, by ALL means, treat yourself! However, living lavishly doesn't have to come at an exorbitant cost. If you see something you like on-line or in a high end store, take a picture of it (aren't cell phones great!) Then look for alternate options that will work within your budget. Remember, keep your receipts, you can always return it if you don't like it. (Unused of course ;-D)

Connie, this was a great blog!  We have a custom place here!  If you supply the fabric they will make the duvet - 2 shams and a bedskit for 80.00.  I love it!

That's fabulous, Marci! ~ You know me, "Oh how I love my vendors, let me count thy ways!"

Jill ~ Glad you think so, thanks for stopping by

Wendy ~  There are always options for ANY budget when it comes to bedding.  All too often, Home Owners seem to neglect the one area in the home that will REALLY let them relax and unwind!

Now you gave away one of trade secrets to homeowners. :-)

I love shopping at places like Khols.   Great bedrooms can be picked up for great prices.

Connie ~ I like how you set out the price points.  I ALWAYS look for a deal but I like a beautifully dressed bed.  With stores like Home Goods around there is something to fit every budget.  Even JC Penney has some nice sets at reasonable prices.

Connie ~ Nice that you laid out the various options.  I like to find good quality "sets" at retail stores but since many of them are a bit too "matchy" I add contrasting decorative pillows to make it look more interesting or to work with the art near the bed, etc.

Me to, Michelle ~ Sweet dreams!

Virgina ~ no, no I said local retailer, YOU said Khols - lol

Kathy ~ I wanted to share that you can get a simular look without breaking the bank. You gave some great resources as well, thank you

You're right, Maureen ~ a couple bright, and contrasting pillows can change the whole feel of an otherwise bland set.

Cathy ~  I LOVE bedding as well, hece why I have SO many in my inventory.  But if you want to buy Option #1, let me know ;-D

Here's a newbie question: When you use duvet covers, do you put comforters in them, or do you just use them like bedspreads?

Cathy ~ I do as well, I've lost count. Can't wait to see you!

Not a "newbie" question at all, Laurie, and quite valid ~ But to answer your question of the requirements of fillers in duvets, really depends on the fabric of the duvet itself.  Silk or poly / satin usually do require a filler of some sort simply because don't have enough weight to them.  It would look as if you were just throwing a sheet over the bed.  White duvets will obviously always require a white, preferably down, filler. (as pictured)

Now, duvets that are made of heavier fabrics do not always require fillers, and is something I use often for my Interior Design clients here in SoCal.  Because as it gets colder at nights, as it as been the last couple of nights, they then have the option of putting a comforter or feather bed inside the duvet.  In the summer / fall when it is hot & dry the heavier fabrics have enough weight to them to hold their shape and not just slip off of the bed.

That being said: Option #1 is a comforter, #2 is a duvet, #3 is a coverlet.  The difference between a  coverlet and a duvet?  Coverlets do not have the option of a "filler", they just "cover" the bed and are usually of a nicer, thicker fabric with a verythin insulator in between the layers. #2 Duvet is pictured without a filler as it has reversible layers of heavier vegetable dyed silk and grass cloth blends. (Hence the $450 price tag, which was mostly labor)

Sometimes, I think bedding is the hardest part, it can really make or break a room and look.

Connie, Great post. I love bedding. I have to be careful not buying to much for my inventory. I have always loved creating a high-end look on a budget. It's challenging and fun!

Hi Donna, this is one post I couldn't agree more with. It gives you such pleasure to come home to a master bedroom that is inviting. You know you are home in your special place. :)

For many years I actually sewed all my own bedding. Having two girls always encouraged me to create designer looks for their bedrooms too.

There is a luxurious bedroom look waiting for everyone at any price point. Even the Giant Tiger ( a local discount store) can provide some very good looking duvet sets for as little as $ 30.  Hard to believe but it can be done if you have the eye for what you are looking for. Having a picture of something that you have seen in a high end magazine always helps to keep you on track as you say.

Yes, it can, Cindy ~ Which is what inspired this post.  All too often when entering the master bedrooms, the first picture is what I see, and the first objection to new bedding is either a) I don;t know what else to do.... or b) costs too much.

Donna ~I love hitting the clearance racks for "sets" or great toss pillows that can be used on couches as well as beds.

Michelle ~ Now THAT'S impressive!  I can sew, but I would never take on an entire bed-set myself.  You go, Girl!

Connie, thanks for the examples. Most homeowners are wowed when we 'dress' their master bedroom for selling success. Its a common area of neglect.

Great post about the importance of bedding when selling your home - and as you pointed out it does not have to be expensive!

Wendy ~ Exactly my point.  Most home owners seem to "neglect" this very important space of the house, and for a buyer to see themselves buying your home, they need to be able to picture a beautiful bedroom to relax in.

Michele ~ It sure doesn't! Thanks for stopping by!
