Sal's Restaurant: New York Pizza in Dallas

When I was living in New York for a few years, Tex-Mex Food and BBQ were parts of my diet that were lacking. Fortunately, I have been back in Dallas for nearly 5 years, REAL New York pizza is not lacking.

Sal's Pizza at 2525 Wycliff in Dallas (they also have a Legacy Drive location in Plano) is the best New York style pizza in Dallas, hands down. I have always heard that the secret to NY style pizza crust is in the water and that is why it is so difficult to find it here in Dallas. Well either Sal is importing his water from NYC or he's figured out a way around the water issue because his pizza and Italian entrees are not only great... they are authentic!

Sal's pizza is a NY style thing crust with a robust red sauce and mozzarella cheese. The crust has a softness to it so that you can curl and eat it. And any of the traditional toppings are available.

The pasta and chicken entrée's are all delicious and served with lots of sauce and a side salad. When you get a salad, be sure to ask for Sal's special house dressing. It is like a tomato/basil flavored dressing with tons of flavor... you'll never ask for ranch dressing again!

For dessert (yes, you need to save room). Be sure to get the cappuccino ice cream pie. The name says it all... and it is all that the name promises.

Rounding out the experience, Sal's is a family restaurant and the staff is always friendly and helpful. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are large enough that you can share depending onhow hungry you are.

Now if somone could just master real Tex-Mex or BBQ in NYC! :)

Sounds great we will put this one on our list of places to try.

I love Sal's. New York Style Pizza. I use to eat there all the time when I worked at Countrywide off of Legacy. Good food!

I live close to NY City and real NY pizza is still lacking. The best pizza in all my travels is in the CENTRAL NEW YORK region of the state (Syracuse/Rochester areas). Best italian festivals are there too!

Hi Carol... In my experience once you get outside of NYC or Northern NJ the pizza quality starts to fade. I really do believe that the water has something to do with it!

Hi John... with my diet I don't get to Sal's as often as I used to... but I am always looking for an excuse to get there! :)

Steve - That is good for Dallas. I find it challenging finding good pizza outside of NY but I supposed that is changing with so many relocating.

Steve - I do not need an excuse. So, if you want to meet up one day, that would be great. No business, just a good lunch and good conversation.

mmmmm...sounds yummy! We have a local Italian Restaurant, Baris Pizza, Owners are New York transplants and brought their best recipes with them.

Robust Red Sauce is lacking in most franchised pizza. The sauce makes the difference. Ever had Chicago Pizza?

Hi Jennifer... I have found it to be an easier effort to find good pizza in recent years... maybe you are right about it having to do with more relocation!

Hi Trey... I like Chicago Pizza every now and then, but I was born and raised on NYC Pizza... thin crust and folded... that will always be what real pizza is to me.

Have you tried the NY-TEX in Time Square they claim is tex mex...I cant remeber the name but there's a large texas cowboy hat on the building. It makes me laugh every time I visit.

Hi Mindy & Jay... I have never tried there, but if it's in Times Square I guarantee you that it's tourist fare! When I lived in NYC there was a reastaurant called Dallas BBQ across the street from my Co-op. After trying it, I was offended by the fact that they used the word Dallas in the name of their restaurant... but if you did not know what real Texas BBQ tasted like you would probably enjoy it... it wasn't bad, just not authentic.

When I lived in Seattle, I went to a restaurant named Sam Houstons Tex Mex...it was an embarrassment to tex mex! They offered hush puppies on their menu...I have never seen that here in Dallas!

Hi Mindy and Jay... I have only once seen hush puppies in Tex Mex restaurant and they were not the eddible kind... they were hush puppy shoes being worn on the feet of one of the patrons!

Sal's sure does sound like a real fine place to put on the feed bag. In my little ole area here. There just ain't a really good Pizza eaten place to eat at. There sure ain't no real BBQ restaurant eatrn here.

Steve: Looks like Dale and myself are late getting here to hear about N.Y. Pizza in Dallas, Texas. I doubt if I will ever make it to N.Y. but if I'm ever over your way I'll have to give it a try. Infact, I think we will have pizza this week when we do our Spurs Blog Along. Come by if you can, we may even be serving some of Sal's famous pizza.
