The 14th Annual Pinelands Jamboree was a huge success...I got to pet a rabbit, large enough to put a real scare into Monty Python devotees, and I met Dottie, a pot belly pig about 6Piglet months old…very cute! No lions, tigers and bears, but goats, ponies and fancy chickens! All the critters were courtesy of local 4-H Clubs. I grew up with horses, rabbits, chickens, dogs, cats etc, so I got to be a kid again!

There were also crafts, books about the NJ Pinelands and its rich history, food, music and all things Piney!

The Jamboree whet my appetite forNJ Pine barrens more information on the NJ Pinelands...its importance to our survival and the fragility of its unique ecosystem.

For example, did you know…

  • The New Jersey Pinelands is a million acres of forests, farms and scenic towns.

  • Native Americans inhabited the NJ Pinelands region 10,000 years ago.

  • The Kirkwood-Cohansey Aquifer, one of the world’s largest underground water supplies, lies beneath the Pinelands' sandy surface.

  • Enough water lies underneath the Pinelandsto cover all of New Jersey with ten feet of water.

  • No point in the Pinelands is more than 1.5 miles away from a stream.

  • The Pinelandsis home to more than 90 plant and animal species threatened with extinction in New Jersey.

  • The United Nations has designated the Pinelands as an International Biosphere Reserve, one of only 47 in the United States.

  • The Pinelands is the second most fire prone area in the United States and many trees have pine cones that won’t open and disperse seeds unless they are burned.

  • Scientists are still not sure why the Pine Plains, the largest pygmy pine forest in the country, contains full grown trees shorter than a person.

  • General George Washington’s army was supplied with cannon and shot from a bog iron industry that flourished in the Pinelands for a hundred years.

  • The Pinelands is home today to New Jersey’s blueberry and cranberry industries, which rank second and third in the nation.

  • More than 700,000 people live in and around the Pinelands, yet it contains vast, unbroken tracts of forest.

Thanks for sharing the history with us. I'm not only a history buff, but I also grew up with lots of interesting critters as pets: snakes, rabbits, owls, rats, mice, ants, horses, pigs, cows, donkeys, cats, dogs, etc. I think that's what gave me my great appreciation for all things Nature.
